- I-5 Re-opens, truck lanes remain closed: Transportation authorities have reopened all southbound and northbound Interstate 5 lanes early Monday morning, just in time to help southbound commuters, the LA Times reports. Southbound truck lanes -including the tunnel where the fiery accident happened- may remain closed for months, and authorities expect a slower commute than normal. It's still not clear what caused the accident that killed three people and injured ten, but investgators on Sunday found "the tunnel was charred and still smoldering, the roadway pocked, the ceiling blistered. The highway's asphalt shoulders resembled a solidified lava flow. Sections of concrete walls had peeled away, exposing steel reinforcement bars, some of which appeared to be askew." More coverage: the city has placed a traffic information ticker on the front page of their website, the Los Angeles Times says truckers hate that tunnel, and the Times has a sobering photo gallery.
- Three part series on Castaic High: The Signal's Jim Holt has an in-depth special on the search for a site for the long-awaited Castaic High School. On Sunday, he covered the NorthLake site, today the Hasley-Sloan and Castaic Mesa site, and tomorrow, he'll detail yet another site. The series comes complete with some interesting history of those sites, maps, and more and comes just weeks before the Hart Board elections. Not online.
- Hart Wins a Thriller over Canyon: With less than one second left, Hart High's Jason MacArthur kicked a field goal to carry the Indians over the Cowboys 31-28. Andrew Barlam reports
- Chamber Expo a success: The SCV Chamber of Commerce's annual Home and Business expo attracted some 5,000 people and over 150 vendors, the Signal reports today.
- 12th Annual Santa Clarita Marathon: The City has released details for the 12th Annual Santa Clarita Marathon. The races will begin at the Hyatt Valencia and runners will use new trails along San Francisquito creek. KHTS has more
- Signal criticizes Hart District: The mismanaged Measure V Bond money and the warning from the County about a violation of the Brown Act has the Signal concerned, saying "It looks like our high school district needs a basic education in accounting and open government." The editorial is the first we've seen on the Hart District from the Signal in awhile, and even though it's been written under the new regime on Creekside, it follows several other damning Signal editorials on the Hart Board in the last few years written under prior management. Will anything change? Doubtful, seeing as how only one man stepped up to run for the Hart Board.
- Speaking of: Paul Strickland, who sits on the Hart Board, has an odd op/ed column in the Signal today, decrying the low birth-rate of white Americans and stoking fears about excessive brown babies. "It's hard to estimate the amount of illegal Hispanics born yearly in the United States, but quite possibly as many as 1 million of the 4 million are born to parents illegally here," he says. The white/brown baby split is "truly the main issue facing our country," Strickland concludes. Also in the column: apparently European nations that have socialist economies aren't democracies and the Democrat's solution to illegal immigration is "amnesty." Not online.
- Council Cadidate Trautman on senior rents: After rent increases at local senior apartment buildings, seniors "can't afford to have their prescriptions filled. They cut grocery costs by eating breakfast cereal at every meal. Forget about a movie or dining out. Even if they could move to a more affordable apartment elsewhere, they have nothing left for first and last months' rents or the security deposit." Link
- Thumbs up to local media: Council Candidate and Parks Commish Laurie Ender just returned from a vacation to France when the big accident happened on the 5. She says KHTS did a superb job of keeping local residents informed on the ever-changing news from the Newhall Pass. SCVTalk echoes that sentiment- the Daily News, Signal, SCVTV and KHTS did a great job of keeping us up to date (as well as the City). Link
