  • Tataviam Artifacts found in SCV:Thousands of artifacts from Santa Clarita's original residents, the Tataviam Indians, were found recently by Newhall Land while it was building the 1000+ home River Village project near Bouquet Canyon Road. Those 7,000 + artifacts include stone tools, arrowheads, cooking utensils and beads, were donated to the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society and will be put on display at the Society's museum in Newhall. An environmental study indicates that the area where the find occurred may have been "an American Indian village dating back thousands of years," situated next to the Santa Clara River, which would have flowed at the time.   • Lobbyist, register thyself! Katie Geyer has a brief story on an important matter before the City Council: whether lobbyists ought to register before they advocate in front of the city council and what penalties ought to be imposed if they don't. Link
  • It ain't cheap to develop in Santa Clarita: A Daily News reporter found that Santa Clarita charges more for developer permits than most other cities in Los Angeles County. The article, which is primarily about taxpayers subsidizing developer fees for the city of Los Angeles, says "the city of Santa Clarita charges among the highest planning and development fees in the region," but still enjoys a business-friendly reputation.   • Trucker killed on I-5: A trucker driving northbound on Interstate 5 crashed Saturday evening and died. His truck went over "an embankment and caught fire" near Calgrove, according to CBS 2.
  • Student loses fingertips in Saugus High wood shop accident: A 14 year old Saugus High freshman lost three fingertips in a wood shop accident last Wednesday. He reportedly slipped on some sawdust, and his right hand went into the machine. The boy was taken to Henry Mayo and surgeons worked to re-attach his fingertips. The mother of the boy has contacted a lawyer and says that there wasn't enough supervision in the wood shop class. Sharon Cotal has a complete story
  • Fire crews on alert, winds expected: Meteoroligists aren't sure how strong the winds might get today, but over three dozen firefighters are on standby in Santa Clarita and other cities in case fire breaks out. Is it time for a rain dance yet?
  • Drive By Flu Shot successful: The Times reports that COC's drive-through flu shot program attracted over 1,000 cars this weekend and that such programs might become useful in the event of a viral outbreak or bioterrorism. Link
  • KK interviews Bob Spierer: Kevin Korenthal, the conservative blogger and Newhall Redevelopment committee member, got a chance to sit down and talk with Bob Spierer, Santa Clarita's first "Police Chief" and candidate for a seat on the City Council in April 2008. The interview is brief, but KK asks Spierer for his thoughts on the hospital expansion, safety, and who's endorsed him so far.     If you can find a copy of the Xpresstoon map at one of the local hotels, it's worth checking out for the comedic value. It is absolute rubbish -- instead of Magic Mountain, there is an icon for Knott's Berry Farm with a small note indicating it's 40 miles south. I presume Six Flags saw through to the scam and refused to pony up the $$ to be included, and Xpresstoons sacrificed accuracy for spite. I think grade-school children could produce better quality work.

    Jeff -- RE: the "ad huckster" story I wrote for The Signal: No one forced anyone to explain anything. I thought it was more ethical to disclose that info than not. Your assumptions about my mindset and emotional state while writing it are incorrect. Also, When more details became available, the Signal editor updated the story and cut some stuff for space. Happens all the time. Hence the two versions. Another reporter is working on another followup now because it's a developing story and a lot of people are interested, in particular those businesses who were allegedly bilked by Keating. The facts will determine where it goes from here.
