- North Newhall Development faces hurdles: The awful railroad crossing at 13th Street/Railroad Avenue has put a brake on planning for a “commercial and residential community on 200 acres at the mouth of Placerita Canyon,” Katie Geyer reports today. Other issues with a possible development there: an extension of Dockweiler Road to SFR and a bridge over Newhall Creek must be built first, and Placerita Canyon homeowners likely oppose the project, which would add much more traffic to their rural community. - Writers Back to Work, SCV “Thrilled”: That was the word the City’s Economic Development chief used to describe the resumption of television and movie filming in the SCV a day after Hollywood writers went back to work. “The phone has started ringing again,” Jason Crawford told the Signal. In her report Tammy Marshlian details some of the effects of the strike on a regional level. Locally, one wonders if Newhall Hardware was a victim. Report
- Dramatic end to sunny weather: National Weather Service says the SCV won’t get much higher than 52 degrees today. Wind speeds are expected at 14mph, gusting to 18. No rain in the extended forecast.
- Sharon Runner seeks lung transplant: The AV Assemblywoman and wife of state Senator George Runner has a rare autoimmune disease called “limited scleroderma.” She told KHTS that she’s still able to do her job and has a lot planned for 2008. Her husband George, who was mentioned as a possible candidate for Senate Minority Leader, has decided not to seek that post due to his wife’s condition. Link 1, Link 2
- Transient street vendors: Those five code enforcement officers and three Deputies ought to be out on the street today cracking down on street flower vendors and ensuring that you have to stop at one of Santa Clarita’s Fine Floral Shops if you’re looking for a last minute gift. - Golf Championship seeks volunteers: I don’t know what it is about February and March, but we’ve got cycling, soccer and golf events in the next 30 days, and of those, the AT&T Classic (March 10-16) is seeking volunteers “to serve in a variety of capacities” at the Valencia Country Club. - Pessimism thy name is Myers: It must be my youthful naievete and ego that makes me think that my blog and others like it are making a difference in the SCV and getting people more interested in local news, politics and events. Well count on blogger/businessman Tim Myers to dish out a cold dose of reality in his pessimistic blog post yesterday on the national election and how it relates to our April City Council Election: “Five candidates, including one incumbent, vie for effectively one seat, since an incumbent only lost their seat ONE time in the entire history of the City. The four non-incumbents slog along and continue going from one charitable and civic event to the next to see the same people over and over again. They attend candidate forums that handfuls physically attend and perhaps less listen to on the radio,” he says, concluding that turnout on April 8 will likely be low. Link
