Seven candidates for City Council, including all three incumbents, were at a SCV Chamber luncheon yesterday to discuss and debate the issues. Of course illegal immigration was a topic and points to longshot Henry Shultz for calling it like it is at the SCV Chamber no less: “A lot of people here have probably used illegal labor. Sometimes they’re part of the labor pool you need to run a successful business, so it’s a trade-off. But a lot of people don’t want to admit that,” he said. 36,000 jobs were lost in February the Bureau of Labor Statistics says. It’s less than economists were expecting given winter storms over much of the country, but the slide continues. The unemployment rate holds at 9.7% NY TIMES
Tens of thousands of students protest education cuts nationwide. In Oakland, students occupied a freeway, halting traffic for hours. In Los Angeles, UCLA students occupied the Chancellor’s office and CSUN students marched through the valley while a group of 2,000 downtown clogged traffic and slowed commuters. Instead of holding a “study session” on illegal immigration as it promised, the City of Santa Clarita is set to show support for a number of regressive and backwards anti-illegal immigration bills in Congress even as President Obama meets with Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Charles Shumer to see if he can get an immigration reform bill passed by the election. Funny how the lawyer for the homeowners in the Hasley Sloan area is also working with the owner of the other property that is being considered. Don’t say the Hart District is not making a good faith effort this time — now it’s the Castaic community’s fault.

On Illegal Immigration: This morning I went to my local 7/11 and saw a new guy stocking the shelves, etc. He didn’t look much different than me – white, professional looking, in his 40s. My first thoughts were – now here’s a guy who is actually DOING something to help stop illegal immigration – taking one of those jobs that might have gone to a so-called illegal. How about if the rest of the (unemployed) protesters do the same thing??? They current declining rate of illegal immigrants in this country might continue that trend even faster.

PART of the Castaic community… don’t broad-brush us all! And how is this any different than the BUSINESSES of Castaic opposing the previous HS location in the industrial park? So the Hart District will pursue eminent domain againt citizens, but not businesses? Who do they REALLY represent? Oh wait, I already know the answer…

Leslie, I’m with Phil. There were half a dozen people there from Halsey Wednesday night at the Hart meeting. He represents maybe a couple dozen people total. How is that the whole community of 20,000? And since you are going after the owner of the other property, could it be that you don’t want that school in your back yard? What community do you call home? And are you here as part of the solution or just to throw stones?

Concerning the 2 sites for the future Castaic High School: Each site owner is represented by different Attorneys. Only the oppostion to the Hasley/Sloan site has seeked legal representation. Hunt Braly does not represent either site owner.
