News & Misc
- Election results: Prop 98 failed and prop 99 passed. Antonovish demolished his competition and we got a sense of how the Democratic candidates would do against Republican incumbents at the state and congressional level. And seven local Republicans, including Bob Hauterer, BJ Atkins, Steve Lunetta, Scott Wilk, and Kevin Korenthal are now 38th District Republican Central Committee members.
- Downtown Newhall wants city to do streetscaping all at once: There was an important meeting of the Newhall Redevelopment committee on Monday. Business owners on Main Street”cheered” as the committee went along with their recommendation that the city do its streetscaping/facelift project all at one time. Business owners says it’s only fair to spread the pain equally. Also at the meeting: Former City Councilman TimBen Boydston was there, pointing out that the crown jewel of Old Town Newhall Redevelopment -a new City/County library- wasn’t supposed to be built until 2020 or 2022 according to the city’s own plan. - Fuzz investigating Hart District: Nothing really new in this story save for the fact that the LASD’s Special Victim’s Unit (cue Law & Order soundtrack) is investigating all the vague “inappropriate contact” rumors at a few area high schools.
- John Boston stages comeback, to be Grand Marshal of 4th of July Parade: The beloved (and hated) longtime Signal columnist/valley historian/folklorist will be the 4th of July Parade Grand Marshal according to KHTS. Here’s how he reacted: “It’s Grand, pause for effect, Marshal,” he said. After a few repetitions, with the emphasis on the “grand,” he was satisfied.” Link
- Dave Bossert says to fight the power: The West Ranch Town Council president says the activists who helped stop the MRF and who forced the Avenue developer to go back to the drawing board ought to apply for the parks, planning, and open space commission panels in order to ” break the iron grip that a small group of arrogant individuals has on Santa Clarita City government.” Oh and he says bloggers ought to stop belly-aching about this community and do something (funny, I thought I was). - Downtown Valencia Geyser: A realtor snapped this picture yesterday of a geyser in Valencia. Yikes!
- Blogger slams Tony Strickland: Acknowledging that the 19th State Senate District is very oddly shaped, a blogger for the Ventura County Star says Tony Strickland is the wrong candidate for the SCV, Ventura, and Santa Barbara, especially if you care about the environment. “He has opposed legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect children’s health from pollutants, and re-authorize the state’s recycling program, among many other environmentally friendly measures. He even opposed a bill to increase California’s supply of clean, renewable energy,” she writes.
- Tim Myers wants to be invited to gay wedding: The WRB blogger writes about the recent court decision on gay marriage and ends his piece by saying he wants to be invited to one because “the food and flowers will be terrific.” You know, pretty soon it same sex couples will be allowed to wed (I think it’s June 13). I wonder if any will wed here in town. Link
