- Murder near Castaic: The Daily News says a man was “intentionally set ablaze and burned to death early Saturday morning” near I-5 in the Angeles National Forrest, near Castaic. The incident happened after midnight, the paper reports, and was reported as a small trash fire. KTLA says the man burned to death in a car that was on fire, but the Daily News says nothing about a car. Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating.
- June is the month of west side/Castaic self determination: Brian Charles at The Signal has a preview of the two reports that should help Castaic and west side residents decide whether to incorporate as their own city, annex into Santa Clarita, or remain as they are as undistinguished communities in the LA County megaplex. Note Charles says that the reports are being “finalized,” but Dave Bossert over at West Ranch Beacon has said they were all completed in December.
- Las Lomas back for sequel: The fantastical mountain-top development in the Newhall Pass known as Las Lomas may be back somewhat as the City of Santa Clarita planning commission looks at a draft environmental report for part of the area. Signal has more
- Shootout in Bridgeport: Not many details but KHTS says a woman shot a man who was her neighbor in Bridgeport on Friday afternoon. No word if the nearby elementary school went into lockdown or whether the woman was ever caught (the Friday report says she was still at large). KHTS
- Deja Vu all over again, new CEMEX bill: Josh Premako says this will be the sixth time Congressman McKeon introduces a bill that, if passed, would keep a big cement and gravel mine out of picturesque Soledad Canyon. No word on how this bill may differ from the previous bills. Signal
- TV Show filmed almost exclusively in SCV gets cancelled: The city is “not happy” that CBS has chosen to end production of “The Unit,” a counter-terrorism show that was filmed almost entirely in Santa Clarita. The show will end after this season, ending 4 years on the air. Signal
- Dave Bossert, Think SCV and your next Honda: Bossert gievs the rationale behind ThinkSantaClaritaValley.com, which launches in less than 8 hours. He then says he recently got a great deal on a Honda for his daughter here in town, but admits that it helps to know Don Fleming. WRB
- Daily Brief Hiatus: After two and a half years of doing the Daily Brief, I feel it’s time for a break and maybe some “retooling.” I’ll still post regularly to the blog, likely multiple times per day with fresh news and commentary, but the Daily Brief is being shelved for a bit.
