Valentine’s Day Ideas

Turning to more pleasant things, let’s share some ideas for Valentine’s Day. What’s hot and what’s not in Santa Clarita in 2010? I can think of a few restaurants in town that are classy and elegant enough to impress your date on Valentine’s Day, but what about dancing? Are there any places in town that have live music and a dance floor but are not the Rendevouz on Railroad?

For daytime activities, I think Towsley Canyon will probably be spectacular this weekend. You could even hike up to the top and have a picnic there. The weather should be nice this weekend.

    No, Towsley will be terrible. Stay away, bad idea. Snakes. Mud. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my. (I don’t want a crowd when I’m there!)

    The Vu goes under new ownership next month. The previous owners, Carrie and Louise, are buying The Roast House

    My knowledge is second hand so don’t make me swear to it. The deals haven’t all gone through but that’s the scuttlebutt. I wish the outside patio was a little bigger. It’s the only way to get out of the noise.

    The ‘vu? Anyone care to clue us “outsiders” in on that, because back in my day, “The ‘Vu” was short for Deja Vu…. as in the chain of strip clubs.

    Oh, and as for myself… I’m packing up the Ford Focus and headed north to the Santa Ynez Valley for some wine tasting and bed and breakfast action.

    The Rendevous. The actually go by the Vu now, semi-officaly. Never been.

    Never been to the Vu either but Doc’s Inn on Lyons looks pretty disreputable. I always go to the Paseo Club on Wednesday night with my Nebraska bride to make sure she doesn’t run off with a fitness trainer!

    SCV is filled with classy joints like The Vu, Doc’s Inn, Mables, Tailgate, and who can forget Country Girl Saloon is Castaic?

    Option 1: Blanket and a (plastic) glass of wine, at the grassy knoll, beneath a tree along side Castaic Lake–even better when you’ve got some “light breeze” action goin’ on…I better not see 14 other couples in “My” spot when I go! Option 2: Spend the day at Swirly’s Frozen Yogurt.

    Doc’s Inn is a great place to meet someone for a meeting that you don’t wantto talk to. When the band is playing you barely hear yourself think. At least the drinks are cheap…I won’t go to the Vu, because I refuse to pay a cover charge for any club/bar in SCV. Tailgate is okay, but can get a bit rowdy and tough to play pool. I’ve been to Mabel’s once and I don’t need to go back again. A nice quiet place is Mulligans (free popcorn!) For V-Day. My kids and I will give my wife some candy and flowers and probably head up to the snow to go play….Jeff, you should think about going down to Shutter’s next to the Santa Monica beach, then ride your bikes along the Venic Boardwalk area…

    CC do you have a lucky man to watch the Daytona 500 with? Thanks for the tips Mike. Good ideas. We might actually make a last minute trip to Palm Springs. As for the Vu- I don’t want to disparage it but it just seemed kind of dark and depressing. But I suppose that’s what a dive bar is supposed to feel like. If anything we need more watering holes in Old Town Newhall. I like the bar at Troc

    I’ve always been wary of any of the bar-only bars in the SCV. Java ‘n Jazz in its heyday was more my type of place.

    Yeah, Olenka, that Castaic motel sign (the fugly red blinking one off the Parker offramp) says “nice, clean romantic!” Also “lowest rate in town.” Oh, Come, All Ye Rednecks!

    I sorta like the restaurant atmosphere of Lazy Dog, but in the PM, the bar/outside scene reeks of douche.

    For Valentines Salt Creek is the best in town–not even close. We love the bar and patio.

    Jeff, Nope, I’m going solo this year. I think that Lazy Dog is too noisy, and many of these bars mentioned are too pricey. I prefer a place for adults because you don’t have babies crying in the booth next to you. But of all the romantic ideas above, the one at Towsley wins hands down to any noisy bar/restaurant. I might just go for a hike in the morning.

    Ah…I can just imagine the romantic mud sticking all over one’s hiking shoes at Towsley. And now that the rain has awakened the juices of those oozing mini tar-pits the smell of crude oil will make that picnic even more enjoyable. Speaking about strongs smells, and I mean no disrespect to the commenting folk, when were dive bars ever, V-day venues of choice?
