  • Santa Clarita, can you feel it? We’re just over 24 hours away from the opening of the SCV’s 1st Wonder of the World, the Cross Valley Connector!   • But not all news can be joyous; indeed, Santa Clarita’s economy isn’t doing so well right now with unemployment climbing to 8.2 percent in the SCV and sales tax receipts for the City of Santa Clarita are way down. But home sales are holding, somewhat, and the office vacancy rate dropped slightly from 18.1 to 16.7 percent thanks to all the massage parlors. Okay that’s not the real reason.   • Speaking of massage parlors, for the first time ever I received via snail mail a Los Angeles County “NOTICE OF HEARING” mailer about a massage parlor opening in my neighborhood. It says “Notice is hearby given that an application has been made to the Los Angeles County Business License Commission to obtain a Massage Parlor-General SC Business License.” I have counted about four parlors within 2 miles of my house and this is the first time I’ve received notice of one opening up.
  • A Valencia High School student has been arrested for “hacking” into the Hart District’s computer system. Details are sparse, but District officials say the student got hold of a password, logged into some systems, changed some things, then changed them back. Once made aware of the breach, the District sent a letter to its employees saying their private information may have been compromised and offered them a year’s worth of credit monitoring to ensure they don’t become identity theft victims. Unknown what charges are facing the student KHTS
  • The thievery was decidedly less high tech over at Old Orchard Elementary School, where someone broke into the school and stole $200 of petty cash, a credit card machine, and two rolls of pennies. Yes pennies. SIGNAL
  • And over in Castaic Junction, a masked gunman robbed a Jack in the Box restaurant of $900 and fled. No employees were injured DAILY NEWS
  • Old Town Newhall Association members don’t just want to make the new library look  more western, they want to make it so the entrance faces South down Main Street. The City says any changes could be costly KHTS
  • The Hart District will no longer mail report cards home, but will instead deliver report cards to students and follow up with a call to parents. The move could save the district $20,000 in postal costs SIGNAL
  • City officials are studying what will happen if  Metrolink cuts half the trains servicing the Antelope Valley Line and Santa Clarita. SIGNAL
  • An LAPD SWAT officer and Sgt. Major in the Marine Corps was killed yesterday by a roadside bomb in Marja, Afghanistan LA TIMES
  • 50% of Californians support same-sex marriage rights, while only 45% oppose it, according to a new poll LA TIMES
  • Who is Not a Ferry Fan? SCVTalk finds out
  • SCV Man and Woman of the year nominations: Pretty interesting list. I’m pulling for Roger Basham, a great anthropology instructor at COC who taught me to differentiate between Australopithecus and homo erectus. No it’s not as bad as it sounds. Basham is also a good realtor KHTS
  • Cool Mexican music concert this evening at the Newhall Community Center KHTS
  • John Boston’s Time Ranger column was pretty good this week WRB

    Re.the library, the OTNA and other powers that be should take into consideration energy usage re.site placement and passive solar use with lighting and cooling costs. It’s not only about aesthetics from the outside, but the human factor, (accessability, ease of use, traffic flow both pedestrian and car, etc.). Also, where is the money going to come from to modify this plan???

    I don’t want to spend any more money on design for heaven’s sake. We are hurting for cash and so just get the dang think built. I would, however, vote the incumbants out who have refused time and time again to listen to the citizens of Santa Clarita. Another $20k saved by Hart mailings, great! Keep it going. Sometimes it is only when you are hurting for cash that you look for ways to save money. Too bad it had to come to that.

    Funny how that Jack-in-the-Box is listed as being in “Valencia” when all is well (check the business cards of all those businesseson the Old Road– they say VALENCIA, not Castaic), but when a crime is committed there, it’s “Castaic Junction.” Castaic is the Rodney Dangerfield of the SCV!

    Turns out it was NOT the JitB on The Old Road, but the one on Hasley Canyon Road, which IS in Castaic. From the Signal: “28000 block of Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic” NLF may want you to return their check, Jeff! …or maybe not, since this JitB is across the street from the “Valencia Commerce Center”… which is in… CASTAIC!

    Not to worry about unemployment. The IRS will need 17,000 new employees to monitor health care compliance: http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/domestic-taxes/87697-republicans-assail-irs-provision-in-health-care-bill- Some of those jobs are bound to be in the SCV. This is great! Not only is Obama saving us all from lack of good health care, but he really does have a jobs program. And we really do need a more powerful IRS. Everythings comming up roses. I’m so giddy I can hardly control myself.

I love the America I was given by those who came before me and grieve for the America we will leave to our children if this ‘one man’ and his ilk succeed in their efforts.     National security – loved him. Spending – didn’t like him very much. I think Clinton ruled much better when he became moderate after his failed attempt at health care. I don’t blame Clinton for the recession Bush inherited, and I don’t blame Bush for the recession Obama inherited. I’m not a koolaid drinker who thinks everything from a president is good or bad based on their party affiliation.

    You know what, you and your side of the isle have really gone to far and inside your brain you know it. How much is to much for you libs?? Complete socialism until you are happy and content? Do you even have the slightest idea what your party is doing to the freedom of a people who initiated individually the forward thinking and success that we (and the rest of the world) enjoy? Do not understand that our political system has been hijacked by 60′s wackos who want to take down a nation of innovation and wealth just to fulfill a selfish utopia of equality without reward? Take, steel, policy and law away personal gain and initiative because of a hate for being first place in the world. Because you so love and care about your neighbors welfare so much you cant stand to see your other neighbor have more then they deserve. Am I right?? You are apart of the single biggest destruction of a nation who has succeeded because of it’s untold possibilities by slowly turning it into Gov. allowed programs.

Where is the sweat on your brow as a lib?? That’s your ideology in a total and complete nut shell.     Money – your thoughts are incoherent. How could anything I have said indicate I have forgotten about 9-11??? You seem to be suffering from a malady called ‘Bush Derangement Syndrome’ and think that all of our foriegn relations problems result from Bush’s policy. Do you really think the world now loves us since Obama was elected??? Do you really think the terrorists are not still plotting horrendous attacks against our nation because Obama is now president??? If you think that Bush is the reason for the hatred of America from those that want to hurt us, I’m sorry my friend – but you are indeed dillusional…….

    Well, how about the city stop buying the larger more costly buses. The new buses are much bigger and more expensive than necessary. If Ken P and staff were spending their own money things would be different. Besides, you misquoted Rocky.

    Living in a technology-driven era, shouldn’t schools consider emailing report cards home? Or having some system where kids (and parents) can check their grades online? That’s what colleges do. No paper there! And no need for phone calls either!

    They have such a system at Placerita. It’s called SnapGrades. A new improved version will be used next year at Hart as well. Don’t know why the entire Hart District isn’t using it . . .

    Olenka, the school district is working on a way for the report cards to be posted online as well.
