Paseo progress

The paseo bridge over Copper Hill adjacent West Creek Academy in Valencia has been under construction since SCVTalk reported in late May.

Newhall Land’s continued investment in paseos in Valencia decades after the master plan is in itself a fitting tribute to paseo designer Thomas Sutton.

The bridge will be completed next week; in case you haven’t seen a paseo bridge in pieces, it looks like this:

The section of Copper Hill Drive surrounding the bridge will be shut down Wednesday September 8 from 6pm until the following morning to complete the installation.

    Great post ND! I love this kind of stuff. It looks like this may end up just like the bridge that goes over Newhall Ranch Road near Northbridge Park. I’m no engineer but it sure seems to me that the Newhall Ranch bridge should have a support in the middle anchored in the median. When you walk across and you are in the middle knowing there is no support it feels a bit creepy. But then again I’m not an engineer so I put my trust in them and still use the bridge.

    Jim, This bridge scheme is actually quite rigid. Yes, it’s a relatively long span, but the reality is that the entire ‘box truss’ works together–there is a purpose, beyond architectural, for each and every steel piece you see. Generally, the governing design considerations (from a structural standpoint) are the deflection of the bridge at the middle and the anchorage/support to the abutments. This is addressed by the curvature (or ‘camber’) of the bridge you see and the pretty incredible concrete abutments they’ve constructed. The ‘strength’ of the bridge rarely what governs the sizes/quantity of steel used…not to mention that these things go through several rounds of approvals before they’re actually built, especially since they’re in the right-of-way. The last bridge we did took us 3 months to design/detail and 2 years to get approved. If my wife asks where I am at 11pm the night they erect this beauty, you know where I’ll be: with my lawn chair and a ‘red party cup’, observing from the sidewalk!

    Why is there a “Paseo” bridge over Hasley Canyon at Cambridge Ave? There are no Paseos in Castaic (not part of Awesometown) and there is a crosswalk at the light. It adds 300ish yards to get to the other side of the street using the bridge, what was the point?

    That’s the same situation from Galixy Carwash (or The Greens) to the mall. Makes no sense (right now).

    We obviously need the bridges because we have idiots living up here that just might run our kids over. People and their tiny sports cars are always in a hurry.
