December 15, 2011 Daily Brief-”What a Difference a Year Makes” Edition

  • Who’d a thunk it!  One year ago Hart Board Member Gloria Mercado-Fortine was passed over for the ceremonial presidency of the Hart Board and this week she gets to be the president!  Also, the Hart Board decides to purchase the Lombardi property for the Castaic High School site but too late to benefit the former local owner who recently lost it in a foreclosure.  Is it just me or does it seem that when the Hart Board does something a word involving “cluster” always comes to mind?
  • While not exactly breaking news that burglars like to lift high end small electronics during daytime burglaries when people are not at home, the comments are interesting.  Commenters rather openly accuse SD of “jukin the stats” by making it extremely difficult to actually file a report of a property crime.
  • Does Patricia McKeon know about this?  Board of Supervisors declares today “Day without a Plastic Bag.”
  • The strange case of Jeff Stenroos, the LAUSD police officer and local resident who may (or may not) have faked his own shooting comes to a (sort of) close with his sentence of two years handed down yesterday.  Many unanswered questions remain and some think Mr. Stenroos is hiding something even more embarrassing than admitting to shooting himself and several extramarital affairs.  My personal favorite detail?  LAPD Detectives first became suspicious when former Officer Stenroos said he was too “traumatized” to answer their questions, later that day finding  him at home playing “Call of Duty” with several friends.
  • SCVNEWS prints newly minted Mayor Laurie Ender’s acceptance speech in its entirety.  Mayor Laurie promises to fight heroin use, Cemex, Whitaker-Bermite and a whole host of other things.  No mention of leaping tall buildings in a single bound.
  • Candidate Jon Hatami takes to his Facebook page and pens a missive about attending his first ever City Council meeting this past Tuesday.  Look for his own words in a future hit piece if his campaign gets off the launch pad.

    The thumbsdown seem to be always against the person, not the sentiment. I believe I got two thumbsdown for paying tribute to our veterans on Veterans’ Day… I <3 h8rs.

    I almost pulled out in front of cyclist this.morning. He was decked out in the finest spandex and Oakleys. Had to be over a grand or more . Yet I almost hit him. Why? The idiot chose to wear all black.and had no headlight! Motorcycles need headlights so how about these hazards. Keep thinking we can see you. Especially this time of year!

    I can beat it…. Last night I almost hit a hipster on a black “fixie” bike wearing dark clothes no helmet and headphones. I couldn’t tell if the fixie had brakes or not but… What a moron.

    1st, it wasn’t me. 2nd, I 2nd the need for headlights and flashy spandex. 3rd, when in the situation where I might be crossing in front of an automobile, I make eye contact with the driver and proceed on the assumption that they STILL don’t see me. Otherwise, Darwinian thinning of the herd is in full effect. Fixies aren’t actually human, so .. whatever ..

    I stick to the paseos in darkness, regardless of lights on front or back. I worry more so about riding through parking lots. I am thinking about putting a strobe light on my bike and blasting some Deadmau5.

    Paseos carry their own special dangers. Unlit walkers/joggers/runners, rabbits (seriously, those buggers wait until the last second to dart across lanes and can send you into a flying W). Why are you riding through parking lots?! #smacksforehead

    As Jeff would wholeheartedly agree, ride like you’re invisible! That way we can all have a happy holidays. Sorry but these semi pro or club riders have an attitude to match car drivers.

    You’re a Packer fan so I’ll take that into account. There is no excuse for a bad attitude from either automobile drivers or cyclists, be they club riders or fixies. Granted. But try the shoes on friend, and ride a mile in them. We’re on 16-19 pounds of steel or carbon with little protection. You’re enveloped in thousands of pounds of steel, plastic and air-bags. It’s exceedingly hard to NOT grow a bit of an attitude when you’re obeying the rules of the road, have the right of way, and still have to face wild-eyed automobile-evangelists who want to convert you to a pot-hole filler. Happens. All the time. I’m long past use of the middle finger and have evolved to a friendly wave in the hope that the offender may think he just nearly took out someone who recognized him .. and maybe, just maybe, he will think twice next time. I just wanna ride. Let’s all be safe. It’s all I ask.

    There are A Holes and there are A Holes, what can I say? I bought my 10 speed in Japan having never ridden one in 1977. (Drivers license trumped bikes!) Right into narrow rush hour streets, riding over the Benjo ditches. At least the Japanese peacefully co-exist with their bikes so I wasn’t killed in my wobbling. I rode both sober and after too much Akadama. Only in Japan at 22yo, in the Marines. I’ve done some stupid stuff! My point is simple. In the 70s I have a front tire friction generator to light my headlight. These days they weigh ounces and cost little. BUY ONE! I’m an attentive driver and it took me too long to see this cyclist. A simple LED lamp will save lives for under 5 bucks. Is that asking for too much? What did that body suit set ya back?

    Joined the USMC in 73 in Milwaukee. I do go back for games occassionally. (sp?) Owner of the Pack Sir! (Chest puffing) Me and a few hundred thousand others but still! Didja know that Packers management does take calls from shareholders? We just don’t abuse it. Get your shares now!

    Went to the beer depot often as a kid but Culver’s doesn’t ring a bell. Chief Oshkosh, Drewreys, Gettelmen,…..ah!

    He’d listen to folks and was actually relatively responsive. He asked City staff tough and probing questions, unlike the 4 rubber stamps we have today. I’m sure Berta will start her attacks on TimBen post haste…

    TimBen was one of the few that actually did his homework on agenda items rather than read the “executive summary” put out by city staff. He researched a “Big League Field of Dreams” project that the staff put before the council and found disgruntled cities who had suffered through the higher-than-quoted costs of the projects built in their towns. One city actually initiated a recall of the council members that voted for the fiasco. He also found parking, and a myriad of other discrepancies, in the propaganda put out by G&L Realty about their medical office buildings project proposed on the HMNMH campus.

    NFIC you seem to be obsessed with mentioning me lately in your posts so I guess I should be flattered. TimBen is not my choice, nor apparently the choice of many others, even though he changed his strategy and toned down the anti-city vitriol in anticipation of launching his newest campaign. I think most folks with a pulse see right through his “acting”. I hope when he loses this time he will finally stop using the “former City Councilmember…”appellation. So far we have two non electable challenging candidates that I am sure will be championed by you, Ferdman, and the rest of the anti-city contingent who want a change no matter whether it is for the better or worse. I do agree that some issues of concern need to be addressed by this council starting with, if there is no longer an equitable rotation system to select mayor and mayor pro tem, then what is the process acceptable to the public for selecting our mayor and mayor pro tem. I think the matter should be placed on the council meeting agenda soon so that the public can weigh in on the issue and get some answers as to the “current” selection process since after all the individual council members are voted in by citywide residents. Those voters have a right to have their gal/guy serve as mayor and pro tem too and to understand the process for when their choice has their turn to sit in the center seat.

    I think the process is quite clear. There are open nominations from the dais. If there is a second, the council votes and if there is a majority in favor, the nominee is appointed either as Mayor or Mayor Pro Tem. The council majority will do what they think is best for the city and we just have to trust that they know best. I am confident that egos and political gamesmanship are set aside and those that think otherwise are simply too cynical. And aren’t you getting tired of “folks like that” always thinking there is some nefarious plot? But if you want to comment at a council meeting, I’m certain the council will take your comments to heart, particularly if they hear what your saying when they are not busy texting.

    The Signal story about Ferry’s self appointment as Mayor pro-tem was put on a back page today. Holt wrote the article dancing around the idea that Ferry and other council members had made the decision prior to the meeting. Ortiz added spin saying part of the perception was the fault of an overzealous secretary. They must be feeling the heat. Looks like the only people who believe that bunch of BS live on the 3rd floor at City Hall.
