- Embattled SUSD Board Member Stephen Winkler says he'll fight to the end and won't resign his seat, regardless of the "mounting" pressure on him. The Signal continues to press him on his YouTube comments, and whereas Winkler earlier this week said YouTube was used by "moviemakers" now he's sticking with his story that his Google account has been hacked, probably as far back as 2007. As Luke "On the" Money writes, though Winkler denies commenting on YouTube, he has linked to YouTube video through his Twitter account. And he admits to being a notorious Signal commenter who has had much of his comments pulled. SIGNAL
- SUSD has posted the Board Agenda for tonight's meeting to discuss Winkler's behavior. There will be public comment time after the meeting starts at 6:30pm, and the Board will enter closed session, prior to adjournment. Remember the only thing the Board can do is publicly and formally censure Winkler; I'm not sure if we can expect that tonight but given the news all week, I don't think it'd be wise for the rest of the Board to let this story fester with no action (of course, if they formally censure him, that might make the story even bigger). - The body of a 61 year old man was found behind a Bouquet &Plum Canyon business late Tuesday night. Investigators are mum on the cause of death, but both SCVNews & the SIGNAL say it was a likely suicide.
- Great National Journal pieces on Congressman McKeon. The first one calls McKeon a "known conciliator" and quotes him on how difficult its been for him to deal with the hard-core right wing of the Republican party. The piece also says that McKeon likes to persuade through charm, dinners and small get-togethers, persuading rather than hammering people. He says he has no relationship with President Obama, but he has enough influence to call up SecDef Hagel and ask things of him. And McKeon bluntly says at the end of the piece that he has no plans to retire...yet. NATIONAL JOURNAL 1
- The second NJ piece says McKeon is "not part of the lunatic fringe" and is definitely "old school," but is frustrated by the fiscal cons in Congress. Republicans & Defense are the weakest leg of the GOP's three legged stool. Others say McKeon simply doesn't have the "clout or credibility" to push for a stronger defense agenda. NATIONAL JOURNAL 2
- Meanwhile, Scott Wilk says he won't run for Congress if McKeon retires; he supports Cameron Smyth in a thread on Ray Kutylo's SCV LTE GROUP
- New school funding formula proposed in Sacramento should restore some of the cuts made to SCV school districts during the recession. "It's a down payment on recovery," Marc Winger of NSD says SIGNAL
- Awesome: Local Korean War vet has raised enough funds to get a replica Vietnam War Memorial to visit Santa Clarita. I think the last time the travelling Wall was here was in the 90s. This time it will be placed in the Westfield parking lot for 3 days in late September, and will have a 24 hour guard, escort into town, and several events planned. SIGNAL
- Crime rate fluctuates, going up in unincorporated areas, but down in City areas. Leon Worden details the double-digit percentage changes in several crime categories then lists the numbers and crimes per-capita figure that changed quite a bit this year over last year given the annexation of several unincorporated communities (thus making crimes per capita more likely given a smaller population in unincorporated SCV, and less likely in a higher-populated City). - This could have been much worse: A cement truck and a gasoline-carrying semi collided on the Southbound 14 yesterday near Placerita. But no big explosion and only minor injuries resulted. SIGNAL
- A beautiful German Shepherd dog has been hanging around Lake Elizabeth after the Powerhouse Fire. Several Facebookers have commented on the dog, and though no one recognizes him/her, they think he may be escaped during the fire and is hanging around the lake, looking for his owners. A Simi valley animal rescue group says they're going to try to capture/care for the dog, meanwhile if you know who this handsome guy belongs to, speak up! Oh, and Winkler is not the owner so don't let him claim it ok? FACEBOOK
- Image not recoveredf16.jpgDid you hear the loud roar of jet engines late Tuesday night, at about 10:22pm? You weren't alone. Some Facebookers and I sleuthed through the internet to find out what was going on and it appears at least one, possibly two military jets flew over the SCV -perhaps with afterburners lit!- at that time. The airplanes, which we've traced as Air National Guard flights, roared up the SCV until they were out of range of Los Angeles World Airport's flight tracking system. Anyone good with trig? We need to estimate speed. LAWA TRACKING
- Speaking of Maps, the City of Santa Clarita has upgraded its online GIS mapping system to a powerful new, Silverlight-enhanced dynamic map that's really slick. You can view just about any piece of information the City can, from open spaces, to different types of zoning, to parks and arteries. Pretty neat. - Six Flags Magic Mountain will officially open the "Full Throttle" roller-coaster on Saturday, June 22, which will be the park's 18th roller coaster, "extending their lead of having more roller coasters than any other park on the planet" and securing a new record with the world's tallest vertical loop at 160'.
