Guy Runs for Congress, Hates His New District

What can you say about Tony Strickland? It's hard to run for two different seats in Congress, harder still if you ran for the first seat by talking trash about the people who live in the new district.

What's his next spot going to be? Hey voters of LA County, back where I come from, we care about our neighbors. I don't know what you do there, but you probably hate your neighbors. Even though I live a "world away" I'd just love to be your Congressman. Cheers!

Here in Northern LA County, we have nothing but love for VeCo. Your Timm Herdts and Brian Dennerts. Chuck D and John Buccola. Lee Rogers. We used to have the same area code! 805 for life, right? Why don't you love us back, Tony?

    If we outsiders want to learn more about what he'll do for the lowly people of LA County we have the privelege of donating to his campaign in order to enter his website.

    Thanks for pointing out this information Jim. It's very telling. In fact, it's the most chutzpah I've ever seen a candidate exercise with respect to his/her campaign website. Apparently, if one is too frugal or too poor to donate money to Mr. Strickland's campaign, he doesn't want the person to see or hear his message. I wonder what Mr. Strickland wasted taxpayer money on that he's bragging about on the website, but he does not want ordinary people to see.

    I'm guessing that his website until today was just a donation page. He made his formal announcement today (The Signal, etc.) and re-did his Facebook page with the new logo and pics.

    Wait, so Ventura County is home yet he is going to represent us? How does that work? What size carpet bag does one carry when moving from Ventura to the SCV?

    I have some friends over in Simi Valley who are moderate Republicans and Democrats, and they don't have much nice to say about Tony Strickland, his wife Audra, or the people the Stricklands have chosen as staff members. Perhaps Santa Claritans who are not particularly wild about having Tony Strickland as their new Congressman should be talking to the community activists in Simi Valley to get the details. And as an "oh by the way", recently I read on a Washington D.C. based blog that there is a "House Rule" that prohibits Congressmen over the age of 75 from being House Committee Chairmen. Since Buck apparently turns 76 in September 2014, perhaps Santa Claritans could have anticipated Buck's retirement if they knew about the rule.

    If that's the case, we should see Hal Rogers (R-KY), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, retire this year as well.

    Coastal Sage: I think the best characterization of Tony and Audra Strickland is that beyond wandering around certain Republican events and reading out their conservative talking points, they are pretty darn lazy.

    Ouch! It sure would be nice is some energetic, well liked Santa Clarita Republican would run for Buck's seat, on the chance that the Republican candidate will win. As I've written before, when I was about 12 one of my dad's friends from World War II showed up for a visit. He was a Republican Congressman from some state south of Pennsylvania (I forget which one). At the time, the Democrats were in control of Congress. I specifically recall him telling my parents that being a member of Congress was a great lifestyle, because you were your own boss and didn't have to show up at work first thing in the morning. He said that he had a budget which was big enough to pay people to do all of the hard work. I remember him talking at length about playing golf at the Congressional Country Club. So now, it's absolutely clear that there are 3 approaches to working as a Congressman from either party. Work hard for your constituents, or skate, or ignore your constituents' needs and enrich your campaign committee and your spouse by pandering to the interests of lobbyists and their clients. Yesterday, I checked to see if Rep. Buck McKeon and his staff had made any progress in helping with the passage of S. 771 which is the latest iteration of proposed legislation to save Santa Claritans' respiratory health and mental health from effects of the opening and operation of the gravel mega-mine called the Cemex Mine or the Soledad Mine. The City of Santa Clarita has been hard at work since 2004 trying to get such a bill enacted. One of my most treasured memories is that of Frank Ferry leading a huge crowd at Canyon High School in a 2003 rally opposing the mine. Those who follow politics in Santa Clarita know that Congressman McKeon has not been helpful in the past 10 years in getting such a protective bill enacted for the voters who are his constituents. It looks to me like the candid comments by my father's friend, the Congressman, are true. Congressman McKeon's office has been skating or blowing off the City of Santa Clarita on the Cemex Mine issue for most of the last 10 years. The last I had heard, Congressman McKeon promised to help get the latest bill passed if and only if Santa Clarita's Republican activists supported Mr. Strickland. The word-on-the-street was that Rep. McKeon would not help if Republican activists supported anyone else for Congress. (Sounds like Governor Soprano from New Jersey wrote that script.) As you'll see in the linked document, below, it may be necessary for Santa Clarita voters to turn that around and vow not to vote for Mr. Strickland unless S.771 is enacted by both the House and the Senate before Primary Day. What I found in my search for information yesterday was that a hearing on S.771 was held in November 2013 and the BLM was absolutely and completely unhelpful, opposing the bill. Read this: http://www.energy.senate.gov/public/index. So I am wondering what the he11 Rep. McKeon and his staff have been doing to "help" the City's legislative efforts and I am profoundly irate with the BLM as managed by President Obama's Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewel, the former president and CEO of REI, the Seattle-based retailer of outdoor gear. Secretary Jewel is so incompetent at controlling her subordinate employees, she lets them run amok opposing legislation sponsored by one of the Democratic Party's most senior women Senators, Santa Clarita's S.771. Everyone with a brain in Santa Clarita has been saying, for at least 10 years, that the solution to the Cemex Mine problem is a political fix, not a policy based decision. I used what I learned in Santa Clarita about the BLM and their mining policies to help another community, in another state, act with bi-partisan political will to stop BLM from selling gravel mining rights for another Cemex mega-mine. In that case, the mega-mine was going to be directly up-wind of a community of 2 Million people. That state's 2 Senators, a Republican and a Democrat, and 3 of that state's Congressmen, 1 Democrat and 2 Republicans got the job done, with BLM's management getting the clear political message that their damn-the-public-health revenue generating policies were unacceptable. The only Republican who deserves to be Santa Clarita's Congressman is a person who is indefatigable in mind and body, in getting the job done to stop the Cemex Mine to protect Santa Claritans' health, especially children, senior citizens and those with respiratory illnesses, and to preserve Santa Claritans' sanity as they commute to and from work on the 14 Freeway. Legislatively stopping the Cemex Mine is an issue "owned" by the Republican majority on Santa Clarita's City Council and supported by all of Santa Clarita's organized Democrat and environmental groups. I pray that Rep. McKeon leaves a legacy in Santa Clarita of getting the job done, on the Cemex legislation, before his Congressional career ends. Surely he could use is legendary good-old-boy charm on the desk jockey cowboys at the BLM and get the job done.

    This is silly. Strickland was running against a very liberal member of Congress from Santa Monica who was a protégé of Tom Hayden's. It was obvious what he meant and I don't think anyone really considers Santa Clarita or Palmdale and Lancaster to be like the rest of L.A. County.
