SCV Anonymous writes "The University of California Cooperative Extension released its first issue of the Santa Clara River Watershed Times on December 6, 2006. The newsletter covers topics vital to anyone who lives, works and recreates in the Santa Clara River watershed. A copy can be found online here.
With an area of 1,634 square miles, the Santa Clara River watershed is the largest river system in Southern California and runs from its headwaters in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County down to the ocean in the City of San Buenaventura in Ventura County. It is home to a variety of plant communities, providing habitat to over 35 sensitive animal and plant species, 14 of which are considered endangered and/or threatened, as well as a growing human population.
Written by experts from academia, government agencies, businesses, nonprofit organizations and community groups, the newsletter presents articles concerning all aspects of the watershed and deals with difficult balancing issues surrounding land development, ecology and water quality. Cooperative Extension hopes to create a forum where Santa Clara River watershed stakeholders can turn for objective insights on current events and updates.
