Several people have called or emailed me asking if I was crazy enough to ride in the cold wind and rain in the last few days.
“For God sakes, get a car!” one of them said in an email. “This is nuts!”
Thanks for your concern, and believe me, I get it. It is nuts. But it’s a choice I made and I must live with the consequences. People all over the world ride bikes as their primary form of transportation, and while it’s not quite as easy to do it here in the States, it is nevertheless the choice I’ve made.
All in all, we Claritans don’t have much to complain about weather-wise; this is only the third time I’ve ridden in inclement conditions in nine months of commuting by bike. I try to ride in the safest, most predictable way possible, and I’m aware of the risks.
Anyway, some of the emailers asked how I keep dry while riding. I’ve prepared a short slide-show answering that question and showing some of the challenges cyclists face when they ride in the rain. Enjoy!
