What are you doing this weekend?
Nothin’ much? Maybe a movie, trip to the farmer’s market, or perhaps that time honored SCV tradition, garage sailing? Are you maybe thinking of sleeping in, even though the weather’s going to be OMG gorgeous on Saturday?
Well think again, because I want to tell you about a cool, first time, charity event this weekend that I heartily endorse.
It’s called the Santa Clarita Century and it’s on Saturday.
"Gee, I tell ya folks, this is a great event," Former/Future Mayor Kellar said. See, he supports charity and bicycles, so should you!
What is it? Well it’s not 100 years, but rather 100 miles of bicycling.

See it’s not just a 100 mile bike ride. That’d be extreme and of limited appeal. No, there’s also a 50 mile ride, which is still long, but all together a lot more doable than 100 miles.
But wait! There’s more!
There’s also a family ride, a casual, six mile fun-ride entirely on Santa Clarita’s wonderful bike paths, separated from Santa Clarita’s not-so-wonderful drivers. What’s more, there’s a bicycle expo and lunch over at the Soledad Canyon Metrolink station, so even if you don’t want to ride, you can stop by, check out the goings-on, and grab a bite to eat.
Best of all, we’re not just going to be out there pedaling our hearts out for fitness and health. No, we’re doing this for charity!
That’s right, ride in the Santa Clarita Century event and you’ll support the very worthy Santa Clarita Child and Family Center, a group that has provided “quality mental health, behavioral and educational services for children and families in Santa Clarita since 1976.” What could be better than pedaling and supporting that kid –>!
Entry for the 50 and 100 mile ride is a bargain at only $50 per rider ($75 if you have a tandem and a buddy/significant other). The short family ride is only $10, and the first 100 participants will get free charity event schwag in the form of a T-Shirt. The family ride starts at 10:30AM, so be sure to show up a bit early.
All proceeds benefit the Center and you don’t even have to bother with online registration, you can show up on Saturday and ride if you like. Check out the website and download the Event Bible for all the details!
