KHTS and the Sheriff’s Station have more details on the stabbing murder that occurred in Canyon Country last night:
Homicide detectives are investigating the stabbing death of a man found in the wash behind Art’s Liquor in Canyon Country.
Deputies were called at approximately 8:30 Monday night and found the man, who had suffered several stab wounds, near a homeless encampment.
The man’s identity is still unknown, but sheriff’s officials said he is approximately 35 years of age. He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he later died of his wounds.
Detectives are currently on the scene conducting an investigation.
Now that they mentioned “behind Art’s Liquor,” I think I can say with confidence that the murder occurred near a place I ride through frequently, a place I and other cyclists have nicknamed, “The Den of Sin.”
The Den of Sin is this little odd triangle shaped plot of land right next to the river at the junction of the Soledad Canyon bike path and a smaller path that leads north to Soledad Canyon. It’s right near a ped/bike bridge east of Sierra Highway:
I call it the Den of Sin because that’s exactly what I see going on there as I try to ride past as fast as I can. I’ve seen 1) drug use, 2) fist fights, 3) possible sexual liaisons (I’m kind of prude and look away) and more. People sit around there all day just hanging out, up to no good as my dad would say.
On one occasion, I witnessed a teenager getting beat up by a much larger male. The male was running after the teen, who was in tears, saying, “Come on p****, take it like a man.” It looked to me like gang violence, but I know next to nothing about the thug life. Anyway, I called the police and wanted to dismount and help the kid, but decided to keep riding on once I saw some big men rushing to the youth’s aid from Soledad.
It’s a nasty place and my danger antenna flares up whenever I ride by on my bicycle. I sometimes am so concerned by what I see there that I warn female joggers approaching it to be cautious. That said, I’ve never been accosted and never seen a “homeless encampment” nearby.
If this murder serves any purpose whatsoever, hopefully it will be to clean up this dangerous, odd wedge in Canyon Country. More cops on scooters patrolling the paths please!
