  • In case you missed it, the Cross Valley Connector opened this weekend with great fanfare, pomp and circumstance. In the blogosphere, SCVTalk made history with NickelDime’s live mobile broadcast of the event. The CVC’s opening was so momentous that at least one blogger used the “Bridge the Gap” as a metaphor for the gulf between man and God. SIGNAL
  • Santa Clarita Valley home prices inched up .5 percent in February to a median price of $410,000 the Southland Realtor group says. Also, sales were up two percent from January numbers. Condos were the big winners with an 11% increase in median price DAILY NEWS, SIGNAL
  • Maggi Perkins, the granddaughter of the first SCV historian AB Perkins, spent five years cobbling together photographs her grandfather and father left her while making the new “Newhall : Images of America” book. Really interesting story by THE SIGNAL
  • Meals on Wheels volunteer saves elderly man’s life after he collapsed on her in the doorway of his home. “It had already been at least one, maybe two minutes or so since he had taken a breath, so I did some gentle chest compressions,” Tracy Gauny told THE SIGNAL
  • Plan to connect Lyons through to Dockweiler Avenue and build housing project on Casden lot angers both people in the Dockweiler neighborhood and the powerful Placerita Canyon homeowners, which is one of only a few “special standards districts” in the SCV SIGNAL
  • LA Sheriff’s plan to electronically monitor inmates isn’t working very well says the LA TIMES
  • College of the Canyon’s Culinary Arts program will stay at its current location on Town Center Drive until at least the end of the semester. The program had faced eviction earlier SIGNAL
  • I Heart checks out “wildflowers by the millions” north of Santa Clarita I HEART SCV
  • Signal calls on parents to understand why the Hart District is canceling 8th grade promotion ceremonies district wide. Understanding? The taxpayers don’t want to pay more but they want the same or better services, even with real budget cuts SIGNAL
  • Washington DC likes Antonio Villaraigosa’s LA transit master plan LA TIMES
  • Daniel Henriquez, City Council candidate, cites Laurie Ender’s election in 2008 as a model of “grassroots” activism that can get someone elected to the Council.  That’s true, Ender brought out a lot of new voters to the polls, but an assist from “Good ol’ boy” Frank Ferry didn’t hurt either SIGNAL
  • LTE Writer echoes what I’ve been saying for years: Frank Ferry’s poaching of SCV Football talent must not stand and therefore he should be voted out of office SIGNAL
  • The Signal and the City of Santa Clarita are in bed together, so much so that they are “spooning” says Dave Bossert over at the WRB
  • Don’t listen to Myers: Vote Old School, at the polls, on April 13. Don’t be lazy, disengaged Santa Claritan. Stand in line, sign your name, cast your ballot, and get your sticker. Do your American duty! I’m tired of this “the vote is already determined.” This isn’t Calvinism for crying out loud, we have the CHOICE to show up at the polls and determine the outcome. SIGNAL
  • Runner targets public employees and teachers in meeting with SCV leaders saying that public employees ought to have their salaries cut. He also wants school administrators to become more “entrepreneurial” whatever that means SIGNAL

    If you consider how, when and where Ender got her votes, as well as the margin of victory, Ferry’s late(ish) mailer mattered little. Her roadmap to victory- targeting people that didn’t normally particpate, grassroots support, voter registration, and raising lots of money very early – was brilliant. It astounds me that no candidate followed her example this time. People seem to forget, especially those here, that Ferry’s illegal expenditure was made on behalf of Bob Kellar as well, who it turns out, needed the help more than Ender. Another lesson: hospital expansion was a winning issue. The longer we go without a second hospital, the better it looks, especially to voters that will not be affected by the traffic on a daily basis.

    mike: It is informative that Dave Gauny did very little on the hospital in this campaign, know intuitively that it had run its course and was a dead dog of an issue.

    Tim: I am not so sure that the Hospital is a dead issue. The incumbent council candidates along with Ender keep taking credit for fighting for the new Hospital. As long as we see Office Building construction and no new Hospital on that site, the issue will be alive and well. As a community, we should keep asking; Where is the new Hospital and when will Santa Clarita get a new TCU?

    Jeff: Vote by mail is not Calvinistic! It just means that all the campaigns need to do their campaigning in February and the first part of March, and then go fishing for the last four weeks.

    Jeff: Alemany poaching athletes is not why Hart High School athletics SUCK!!!! Blame it on the opening of West Ranch and Golden Valley that gutted their attendance area!

    Being a proud parent of a Hart High Athlete, I should take Mr.Myers comments personally (for my childs sake), however knowing that he has had a grudge with Hart High School for years puts it into perspective. It’s petty and ‘pitiful’ that our children are told they SUCK by a grown man…sigh…. I know many Valencia athletes, and I would never think, or consider telling these hardworking and excellent students they SUCK.

    “Don’t listen to Myers”–advice well-worth heeding. Crowded elections are often decided by mere hundreds of votes ( http://www.votesantaclarita.com/pdfs/HistoricalResults.pdf ). I wouldn’t be too worried about Tim’s discouragement in TMS, though, as thousands have bravely found the motivation to vote despite Tim’s many assurances that elections are decided before they begin (i.e., incumbents win).

    IHeartSCV: Let’s talk about statistics. In an election where 14,000 ballots are cast 100′s of votes are a BIG deal.

    Tim, a few weeks ago you mentioned the Facebook friends index as an indicator of support for the City Council candidates. I see that TimBen Boydston has garnered more friends in five weeks than Frank Ferry did in 18 months, even with Ferry’s ‘Mayor Dude’ campaign.

    Yes, if social networking is a proxy for what people think then TimBen is much more beloved, which means he has the broad support of a lot of folks that could translate into an historical electoral victory. Of course, according to social networking about 2,000 people were ready to “man the barricades” on the cancellation of 8th grade promotions and a planned school site protest fizzled. If a handful of people show up to complain at this week’s Hart District Board meeting then we know that clicking on a Facebook button does not necessarily translate into action,

    If a candidate is down by “hundreds of votes” on election day, it’s too late. But these are just prognostications based on probability. Vote whenever or wherever, but just vote. I won’t do absentee until the day that I can’t leave the house. I love the process too much. So nothing that Tim says, or anyone says, should dissuade someone from voting. After all, the predictions are based on the assumption that the people who will vote on election day will still vote. There just isn’t enough evidence to suggest that their preferences are different enough to sway the election. Above all, though, it’s an admonishment to the campaigns – it’s already too late. Any strategic decision, major buy, major speech or major move should have been made weeks ago. And don’t limit early mailers to permanent absentee voters – more and more people sell out and phone it in with each election.

    mike: Another sad fact. If a registered voter has not voted in at least one of the last four elections, there is absolutely a ZERO chance they will receive any campaign material so the election will come and go without them knowing.

    TBB gets Facebook in a way none of the other candidates do. Gauny uses a personal profile as opposed to a group or a page, which until recently, was set to private. Ferry’s re-election page on Facebook is an embarrassment. Katz was pointed in the right direction, but i don’t think he’s harnessed it as well as he could have.

    Scott: The numbers are dreadful. It works out to about 100-150 people on average visiting each polling station, so one person every five minutes which would put any fast food store out of business. I don’t apologize for voting by mail, however. Due to job and commuting obligations an accident on the five or an out of town travel obligation could skunk me from voting completely. I can’t be the only one this applies to!

    Go away, Tim, you have no credibility and you are not someone to take seriously. As for The Puny Signial continually ignoring Ender’s huge campaign donations from G&L and Frank Ferry and McKeon’s PAC and even from herself, WE NEED AN HONEST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER! Without G&L and Frank and McKeon’s PAC, Ender would have lost that election. She would have had no money. Added to all that, it was the McKeon Mormon vote that put Ender over the top and nothing else. McKeon always looks for puppets to support, and he get the best damn puppet money could buy with Laurie Ender. I totally agree with Mike about Frank Ferry. Frank should have been removed from his seat for trying to steal players and coaches, especially when his behavior is so unethical in so many other areas. Illegal campaign donation to Ender that The Puny Singal has consistently ignored, threatening challengers at city council, temper tantrums at ever council meeting, and the list goes on. Ferry proves the need for term limits. NO INCUMBENTS! Vote David Gauny and TimBen Boydston.

    Personally, I do not think the attack on Charlie adds any creditability to you at all. Just more Timothy rude ramblings. Frank needs to be removed from the Council for the conflict(s) of his job as Principal of Alemany and his recruiting of SCV athletes, the money he gave to Laurie Ender campaign and Mayor Dude needs to be investigated, period!! There are many of us that still like to go to the polls,so voters get out and Vote on April 13th it does matter! No Incumbents Boydston, Gauny and Katz.

    Agreed. Timmy’s primary sin is familiarity. He assumes you get the joke, but when you don’t, he’s more than happy to up the ante. Grow some skin and realize when people are jus funnin wit cha. Besides, Valencia SUCKS(!!) way more than Hart (who I have to agree also sucks). Representin for Saugus .. we don;t need no stinkin rings…

    TBB was thinking ‘I’ve got to get a humongous sign’ before the echo of Carl Newton’s opinion on no political sign restrictions died away. Unless there is a compelling public safety issue, restrictions on campaign signs in the weeks before an election is an infringement on free speech. The City’s uber-enforcement of some sign restrictions and not others just happens to favor incumbents. It’s another reason for NO VOTES FOR INCUMBENTS!

    That sign is on a highway subject to the jurisidiciton of CalTrans so it is immune from the unconstituional sign laws of Santa Clarita. However, Toadly, TimBen did agree with those laws when he was on the City Council.

    The City Council changed the sign ordinance in Sept 2008, after TimBen left office. When TBB received the large election manual and a briefing from the City the topic of allowable signage took up the bulk of the time. Restrictions on signage were emphasized, although none of the incumbents running for re-election felt bound by the restrictions. The outright theft of signs, both large and small, is to such an extent that it is without question an organized effort, and according to long-time local politicos, without precedent. It seems that more people are getting involved as they become more aware of the low tactics being used to keep the incumbents in office. The home-made signs saying ‘No Votes for Incumbents’ are just the latest expression. It is in this political environment that this campaign is being waged.

    Toadly: The City has admitted that their employees pick up signs in the “public right of way” so they would not consider this unconsitutional activity theft. As for organized activity I think most of the signs NOT picked up by the city (which is the vast majority) relate to people unfamiliar with the election who see the theft as an acti of “soft” vandalism where there will be no consequences. Now the sign I put up on my front yard is still there and it HAS been seen by the one other person on the cul de sac who I know votes and he did not vote for TimBen. (I think he bullet voted for Frank.)

    Wow, Annette, looks like you really hit a nerve! The article in The Signal regarding the Senior Center’s home delivered meals program features David Gauny’s wife, Tracy Gauny. Well done, Tracy, the world is a better place because you are in it. David’s daughter, Carly, also participates with Tracy bringing hot meals to homebound seniors. What a giving, caring family. It is remarkable that two of this election’s challengers have such super families. TimBen Boydston’s wife, Ingrid, is an exceptional teacher, and Ingrid was awarded Teacher of the Year honor. Ingrid was teaching (and still is) at Santa Clarita Elementary when my daughters attended, and they adored Ingrid, as all kids do, because of her enthusiasm and her love of teaching. These two challengers are already winners, with families like this. On a much sadder note, SCV lost a life hero when Parks and Rec Commissioner Ed Redd passed away. Yesterday, we attended Ed’s funeral at Eternal Valley, and so many from SCV came to say good-bye to Ed. Ed did so much for kids, especially at the Community Center, where he spent much of his time making a difference in so many lives.
