  • Mysterious hanging death in Castaic: A 20-something man was found hanging from a tree near Sloan Canyon and Quail Valley roads last month. Authorities think he killed himself, but have been unable to identify him. LA Weekly says he was wearing a crew t-shirt from the hit ABC show LOST and had a cross and rose tattoo. Cops think he may have been hanging from the tree for three weeks SIGNAL, LA WEEKLY
  • US Economy added 162,000 jobs in March! That’s the first time in over a year more jobs were added than lost, though experts say Census hiring helped LA TIMES, CALCULATED RISK BLOG
  • In the City Council election, nearly 6,000 vote by mail ballots have been sent to City Hall by voters too lazy to go to the polls and vote the correct, American way. SIGNAL
  • As Myers reported below, Castaic junior high kids will start attending Valencia High School after the Hart District board voted this week. Castaic leaders are happy because the kids will get to stay together throughout their high school careers SIGNAL
  • Buck McKeon met with local Tea Party organizers as they planned their April 15 protest at City Hall. The group met at Nazarene Church in Newhall SCVTALKERS *
  • SCV Moms Blog will host one last candidate’s roundtable ahead of the April 13 City Council election next week on Tuesday. The Moms just released the results of their survey in which they found that 52 percent of their respondents admit they have never voted in a City Council election. SURVEY

  • Only twelve parents and students showed up at the Hart District board meeting to protest the cancellation District-wide of 8th Grade promotion ceremonies. Said one student: “How are we supposed to say I graduated from junior high — I made it? All (of my classmates’) hard work is wasted. And we’re supposed to act as if it’s fine?” I know you’re disappointed but just think of the adventure you’re about to have as a high schooler. Really we’re all proud of you. SIGNAL
  • California GOP wants Jerry Brown to sue the federal government over Affordable Care Act. Democrats say the recently-passed health care overhaul “will provide insurance coverage to 7.3 million Californians who do not currently have it and give a tax credit to some 390,000 small businesses in the state.” MERCURY NEWS
  • I’m hearing rumors that KHTS’ fake April Fools article about Michele Obama visiting the SCV angered some people around town. They were either upset about being mentioned in the story or upset about being left out. KHTS says the article “ignited angry and odd twitter threads city-wide.” O RLY? KHTS
  • Also, a very sensitive teacher was furious with The Signal for joking that the new Castaic High will be located at the Chiquita Canyon landfill. SIGNAL

  • Tony Strickland has been fined $3,000 by the Fair Political Practices Commission for sending out attack mailers without a real return address in his 2008 campaign for State Senate. VC STAR
  • At least 500 SCV commuters would have to find other ways to get to Los Angeles if Metrolink cuts half of its Antelope Valley line trains, the Signal says. “What is someone supposed to do who doesn’t have a car or can’t afford a car?” Marsha McLean asks. SIGNAL
  • Two students horsing around leads to hate crime: a 15 year old Saugus student “horsing around” with a 17 year old took the older boy’s hand and “drew a swastika on it … using a piece of hard plastic.” The 15 year old has been arrested. What else can you say but WTF? SIGNAL
  • A multi-agency force found a marijuanna grow field worth $6.2 million in Placerita Canyon yesterday. Two Latino men were seen running from the scene and have not been found. The Times says such grow sites are “often operated by Mexican drug traffickers, serviced by farmers brought across the border, and guarded by heavily armed men.” SIGNAL KHTS, TIMES
  • A-hole arrested for twenty incidents of air gun violence, including shots fired at bicyclists. The a-hole is allegedly an 18 year old man who authorities have been trying to find for some time. Well, in January he shot at a bicyclist with his air gun, but an alert resident took down his license plate number. That lead detectives to the man who turned himself in yesterday WRB

    The guy is flat out dishonest. His behavior kind of makes it difficult for the rest of us to care about the rules. After all it is his type that are making the rules.

    Your right, cash. That Republican Strickland is flat out dishonest. Violating state law and then saying it was just an accident. Typical Republicans. When they lie and deceive it’s just an accident or an honest mistake.

    Small correction, Money. Actually a major correction. Your comments should read “Typical Politician”. Try putting aside your political partisianship for just a second and recognize that a majority of pol’s from both party’s are out for themselves first and foremost. Vote em all out and give this country back to “We The People”.

A little judgmental aren’t we? At least they voted. Some of those “lazy people” may be seniors or others with special circumstances.

    Or those who know only the worst of dirt comes out in the final days (like hit mailers), and so they research the facts ahead of time, cast their votes, and ignore the lunacy of the final few days. You know, like “good” Americans.

    Normally, I like to go to the polls as it makes me feel like my vote is real. This time, I had to mail it in due to work conflicts. I mailed it yesterday and when I got home, the mail box was full of mailers (the first I have received).

    As for the mailers, I received one from TBB several weeks ago and two days ago received one from the PAC with a white picket fence and pretty flowers.

    Who exactly are the ‘Citizen’s for Integrity in Government’? Are they a local group? They have sent out ALL of the fancy and slick mailers for the incumbents. Shouldn’t the people of Santa Clarita know who this group is before they vote on the future of Santa Clarita in the election? Wouldn’t it be a hoot to find out that they are a front for the likes of G&L Realty and other out-of-area developers who want to carve up the Santa Clarita area for hundreds of millions of dollars in profit? When are we going to demand that the incumbents reveal all of the sources of their financial support, including this group?

    Last one, My daughter is being “promoted” from 6th grade to 7th grade and will have a ceremony…they don’t graduate any more. Also, why not ask the parents of each kid to cough-up the $11…we already do the various fundraisers etc….

    6th grade and 8th grade promotions are silly and make the participants look like toothless, banjo strumming hillbillies!

    I scratch my head at this 8th grader’s self-centered comments about how her eduacation has been wasted because we can no longer give her a party. But then again, this is a 14 year old talking, take it for what it’s worth. What I’m most interested in is meeting the two adult role models in this young person’s life that feed her this tripe. This family needs to valet park their high horse at the curb and come in for a reality check. As a person who is partially responsible for providing you with a public education, I can comfortably say that I don’t owe you a party for graduating the 8th grade – especially during a time when teachers are being handed their pink slips and violent prisoners are being handed their early release slips due to budget cuts. But according to this family, we’re not allowed to cut their party money off. Cry me a freaking river.

    On Gitlin’s letter: Can I get a committment from from at least five people to PLEASE drop me off at the Soylent Green factory if I write a letter like that? What a crotchety old man kind of thing to do. Next Roger will be pulling his pants up higher!

    Timmy, I have to disagree with you on your post. My daugther doesn’t play the banjo and she has her teeth! Also, a point system was put in place ie…if x amount of points are taken away then you cannot participate in various activities for the 6th graders.

    The 8th “graduation” is ridiculous and should’ve been ended years ago. The vast majority of junior high schools have no “graduation” in this country, so this is not some strange move. I hope the “graduation” is not even reinstated once the recession and budget crunch is over. It’s a waste of $40,000 a year. What makes it even sillier is the fact that NOT ONE JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT IS EVER HELD BACK in the Hard school district. So, if every single student graduates, this ceremony is the $40,000 equivalent of a participation trophy given in many youth sports (don’t get me started!) So, with all due respect to the hardworking student who spoke at the meeting, I say this: Congratulations on your hard work, but when you start paying the taxes, maybe you’ll see what a waste of money the whole “graduation” is. And my mom agreed with me when I was in 8th grade. She let me ditch my “graduation.”
