  • The Department of Defense has released a short report on the Jake Suter. The report says that Pfc. Suter died “while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.”  DoD (hat tip : Petz)  *
  • If you’re interested, a PBS reporter did an in-depth report from Helmand Province earlier this year. This is the roughest of the rough in Afghanistan, and, according to some reports, Helmand is ground zero for General McCrystal’s surge and the Marines are the “tip of the spear” if you’ll pardon the cliche. This is what Jake Suter was attached to. PBS
  • Man stabbed after drinking with friends in Newhall apartment KHTS
  • LA County Supervisors approved a boycott of Arizona by a vote of 3-2 last night, with Supervisors Antonovich and Knabe dissenting. SIGNAL, LA TIMES
  • California’s economy could outperform the nation’s as soon as 2011 says a Comerica bank report LA TIMES
  • Tomorrow Congressman McKeon will hold a Town Hall meeting at Santa Clarita City Hall that will be simulcasted to a few other locations in the 25th District. The topic? The Republicans’ new “America Speaking Out” website, which is either a great experiment in democracy or a terrifying look at what the Tea party would really do in power. The Town Hall meeting will be at 1pm.
  • The SCV Moms have officially launched SCV-Dads.com, a new online network for SCV men where they can find information on “News, sports, politics, hobbies and local happenings.” If they’re half as successful as the Mom’s blog, SCVTalk will be out of business in no time SCV-DADS.COM
  • Santa Clarita was very naughty this Memorial Day weekend: the CHP arrested twice as many people in SCV for drunk driving as they did last year. SIGNAL

  • I ride by the site for the Newhall Library every day and I was pleased to see CITY BRIEFS post a video on the progress there
  • Letter writer thinks that what really flew over the SCV on May 4 was a space shuttle with a “tiny trail of fire burning from the rear of the aircraft.”  SIGNAL
  • I don’t know what to make of John Boston’s latest column. It’s touching, and, as usual, funny, but I can’t tell if he’s really moving or not. WRB
  • “The basic formula in running for governor of California — and to establish yourself as a trustworthy leader — is to misrepresent who you are, to accuse your opponents of torturing toddlers and small pets, and to address voters as if they were no smarter than soft-boiled eggs,” writes Steve Lopez in the LA TIMES

    I am torn between attending the meeting at City Hall tonight and adding my complaint to the fee (TAX) hikes and utter stupidity of those placing the burden on us versus the vigil for our local “son”.

    The link to the Sanitation District Meeting story has, in turn, a link to the Sanitation District’s agenda package. The package does two things: (1) The agenda starts with a closed session meeting called under the following text from the Government Code, to talk about “Initiation of Litigation” concerning chloride limits. (2) There is a curiously huge report from Sanitation District staff blathering about the need to charge new sewer fees to meet the chloride standards. For those who do not remember, from past experience, the Los Angeles County Counsel’s office suckered Santa Clarita by allowing the Board of Supervisors to take a defective vote concerning the Cemex mine in Soledad Canyon, The manner of the vote (filled with anger, cutting off a public hearing) denied Cemex its due process. While everyone from Santa Clarita in the Supervisors chambers wildly applauded, I cringed with horror because I had just seen the Supervisors, directed by the County Council, take the most blatant dive in California political history. I am using the word “dive” the way it is used in boxing matches where the match is fixed for the benefit of bookies. Thereafter, an outraged Cemex sued the County in Federal court, and County Counsel’s office (who can be quite skilled when so inclined) took yet another dive, losing the litigation in record time. Our esteemed Council Persons from Santa Clarita spent millions of dollars on attorneys fees intervening in that litigation, and trying to turn things around, but were fought at every turn by the County Counsel’s office, who were siding with Cemex, seeing no further purpose in the false pretense that they wanted to help Santa Claritans in stopping the mine. So Santa Clarita be aware and beware. The three Sanitation District Directors are going to be crying crocodile tears this afternoon; they may authorize suing the RWQCB; but it will be a sham, nothing more. The County Counsel will take a dive once again, and Santa Claritans will get scrued once again. Make a good record at the public hearing on June 30th that this sewer assessment/fee/service charge is for a purpose which violates Article 13 of the California Constitution, i.e Propositions 13 and 218. Sue the Sanitation District immediately. Separately, do not trust these elected officials, or their disingenuous manipulative lawyers. There is now more than 5 years of history of collusion between city and county officials, and Santa Clarita’s elected state representatives on this issue, which when dissected becomes absolutely clear that these manipulations are for the economic benefit of the usual suspect…not RWQCB.

    LOL!! I won’t ask the details of that last one, Mike. You are ALL welcome on SCV-Dads…dads or not. We have men of all kinds swapping stories and advice they care about. At least come for the poker tournaments and cigar nights. And, Kelly…you’re absolutely right.We would have nothing to talk about on SCV-Dads or SCV-Moms it if weren’t for Jeff.

    Hi rosieray, it’s not about “mommy and daddy problems” necessarily. It’s just a place for all the local happenings and news with a parent spin. Say what you want but we often see the world just a little differently when we’re responsible for other humans. It’s not meant to be exclusive, just has a niche in a valley of thousands of families. From city council elections to stuff happening in our schools, there is a certain take on issues that parents may have. That’s it — nothing else meant by it.

    Jackie, yes I agree, you need your “forum” and we who do not have children need ours. My point was, that we would not get rid of SCVTALK to be replaced by the mommy and daddy forums. (Oh and by the way, I have already raised my children, been there, done that)

    On the issue of the Supervisors’ vote to “Boycott Arizona”, I hope they will consider voting to “Boycott Mexico” next. From the Houston Chronicle, this little gem: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7033818.html The gentlemen who were planning to blow up the dam, and flood a major inhabitated portion of Texas and Mexico, are Zetas, who are former Mexican military men, trained by Green Berets and Navy Seals under U.S. Government funded programs. These former Mexican “commandos” left the Mexican military, to form the muscle for the Gulf Cartel. However, recent news stories have said the Zetas now work for themselves. Next time you head for Texas, make sure to take your life jacket and boat, in case our ever competent U.S. Government employees fail to regulate access to the dam, like they’ve failed to regulate a few other matters lately. And no this news story from the Houston Chronicle is not anti-Hispanic b.s. Look at the name of the Zapata County Texas Sheriff who was interviewed, and who was very upset.
