Hundreds turn out to mourn and remember Pfc. Jake Suter in Stevenson Ranch. The Signal has a photo gallery HERE, article HERE. Meanwhile, Suter’s body remains in Delaware pending an examination by a medical team, according to THE SIGNAL . Also, DAILY NEWS
Meanwhile, the Honolulu Advertiser paper reports that Jake Suter was part of 1,000 Marines that deployed to Afghanistan in Mid-May on a seven month deployment ADVERTISER. And the Honolulu Star Bulletin says Suter’s family “still has not gotten details surrounding his death.” This was the fifth combat tour of Suter’s battalion since 2004 STAR BULLETIN
The developer behind the Singing Hills medical office building has put the project on hold pending meetings with residents. The project was to have gone before the Planning Commission in two weeks but has been removed from the agenda SIGNAL

Boeing has issued a press release saying that if it wins the Air Force’s Next Generation aerial refueling contract, California will benefit from 4,500 new jobs and $223 million annually. They mention two specific companies in Santa Clarita: ITT Industries and Lamsco West. The Next Gen aerial tanker project has a long and convoluted history; Northrop Grumman recently dropped out of the competition BOEING

The Sanitation District and City sent out a 24 page FAQ document on the chloride issue yesterday. I haven’t read the entire thing but it goes into detail on the chloride problem and shows the chloride levels in the river for the last several decades. The document was posted on the Sanitation District website; the City then announced that it was available at about 2:30pm yesterday, a few hours before the meeting LACSD SITE
Speaking of that, did anyone go to the meeting?
Some LAPD officers are under fire after two videos on YouTube were posted. The first shows an Officer angry that a photographer was taking pictures of him; the second shows a group of officers detaining and perhaps kicking a bicyclist during a BP protest ride in Hollywood

Head Minuteman Roger Gitlin pens column for Beacon calling County boycott of Arizona “stupid” and saying that the state of Arizona “owns the Colorado river” which is were LA gets its water from. “I would not be surprised if Governor Brewer orders the State to turn off the spigot.” First of all, Arizona doesn’t “own” the Colorado River any more than California owns the Pacific ocean. Secondly, LA steals much of its water from Owens Valley. Finally, how does a governor command a river to stop flowing? The laws governing interstate rivers like the Colorado are complicated WRB

In an effort to make this meeting productive and constructive, the Singing Hills Neighborhood Group has requested several items from City Planning and the developer prior to the proposed meeting. The list of requested items is in the ‘Discussions’ tab at ‘OUR Valley OUR Vision’s Facebook page.

The chart shows that since about 2001 the chlorides at the LA/Vent county line have peaked around 150 mg/L and are currently hovering around the 100 mg/L limit. The article goes on to say that Filmore and Santa Paula get their water primarily from the ground and that the chloride level there runs 40-50 mg/L. Aren’t the growers getting their water from the same ground source? It appears the discharge from Santa Clarita is not actually having a major impact on the water downstream. This is probably due to the fact that the Filmore/Santa Paula auqifer is also fed from the surrounding watershed including Sespe Creek. Am I missing something?

The memorial for Jake Suter was, at times, very moving. Many people spoke including some who didn’t know him and some who started out not liking him much. The 600-700 folks standing outside his SR home listened intently to it all. The outpouring respect is what America is all about.

Do not forget that Boeing execs were convicted of criminal behavior in the second to last competition for the tanker. Northrop won the last one fairly. Now Boeing gamed the requirements to ensure they win, so Northrop walked from a crooked game. For example, Beoing has Northrop’s last cost proposal in-hand, but not vice-versa. Does that strike you as fair competition? Sad day for the taxpayer when multi-billion contracts are fixed.
