  • Yay! 2011 Amgen Tour of California bicycle race will return to Santa Clarita! Looks like we’ll have the start of the last stage from Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks. NEWS
  • Yesterday a 16 year old female student stabbed another 16 year old female student with an 8 inch chef’s knife at Hart High. The victim was stabbed four times and was taken to the hospital for wounds to her chest, arms, and back. A teacher stopped the attack, which was was reportedly over a boy. The stabber is being held at juvenile hall and may face attempted murder charges. SIGNAL, KTLA
  • Opening arguments in Josh Pipho murder trial: Michael Stevens’ lawyer says his client was scared after a group of 30 men tried to attack him. That’s when he got in his car and hit -accidentally- Pipho and his friend Chad Weitz. Prosecutors say that Stevens deliberately drove his car into Pipho and Weitz, then got out of the car and methodically stabbed each of them dozes of times. Pipho died at the scene SIGNAL
  • The Ventura County Star newspaper has an article looking at the chloride dispute. The reporter talked to VeCo farming interests and our own Laurene Weste and also quoted from a Signal editorial about the “battle.” VECO STAR
  • Between 2000 and 2008, the number of people below the poverty line ($21,594/year for a family of four) increased in Santa Clarita by 28%, from 9,552 families to 12,205. The recession is partly to blame, but the Daily News says the real problem is that suburban areas don’t know how to cope with increasing poverty like cities do. DAILY NEWS
  • Possible state budget deal reached. Deep, deep cuts to education coming SAC BEE
  • Residents are complaining to the City that the OVOV plan is too big to review in 90 days; some suggest a 60 day extension for public review of the plan. OVOV may be on the City Council’s agenda by the spring. SIGNAL
  • A Jewish voter in the 25th District received an email from Buck McKeon in which the Congressman opened with: ““Dear Mr. Mendelson: Knowing your interest in the United States’ relationship with Israel…” But Brad Mendelson says he’s never corresponded with McKeon about Israel, and he wondered how McKeon’s staff knew he was Jewish in the first place. OMGC…I can’t wait to read all the whiny Signal LTE’s once the news gets out that our city will have to (once again) endure the awful traffic tie-ups for several whole hours in May to accommodate this World Class event! And all for a bunch of leg-shavin sissy cyclists…yay…

    I’m happy about Amgen even though I live very close to the event. If a person plans, thay do fine. If a person doesn’t, then they end up cranky and upset like Scott here. I actually went to the movies at the mall when we had the finish line. No problem getting into the movie. Because I was early, parking wasn’t a problem and when I came out (just after the race ended), I got to tour the interesting booths. Pretty cool

    It’s the whiners I’m complaining about CC. I LOVE the tour. I’m for ANY world class sporting event that comes to SCV. A few hours of traffic is a small price to pay for such rare events. Bring on the Curling Worlds says I!

    Knew that Stephens would try the self defense angle. Wait to see the defense introduce YouTube video of the victims back yard mixed martial arts fights. I wonder if Weitz will be called to testify? On the Hart stabbing, if all goes according to usual we will not hear anything about this for years. Media outlets can publish the names of juvenile offenders (that pesky first amendment), but law enforcement will not release the names so they have to find out from other sources. The Hart District will downplay this like they did the race riot on the Hart campus years ago in accordance with their Sunshine policy, but when someone is willing to stab someone FOUR TIMES there is some serious enmity brewing for a while that the administration was not aware of (Reports after the race riot revealed that the upcoming “showdown” between black and latina female students had been the talk of the school for two weeks). I have known many vice principals in the district at other high schools and they head off these events by keeping their ear to the ground. One vice principal at Canyon in the 90′s told me that order was maintained by making sure all the dodgy folks were in their right spot on the commons. If someone was “out of position” he knew to spring into action immediately!

    Two of my children graduated Hart. I am glad they no longer attend. Hart seems to have lost its luster.

    No really. The last of my children to attend Hart would come home with horror stories about the daily happening. Hart is on the downhill slide when it comes to student quality of life. The negative influence at Hart is growing

    A teacher passing by saw the girls fighting, with one girl holding a knife and the other bleeding. When he tried to stop the fight, the girl with the knife attacked him, the report said. The teacher was able to subdue her without being hurt, the report said…The Signal It appears as though Hart High has a heroic teacher who disarmed a possible fatal attacker. Who is this couragous teacher?

    Harlow is one buff guy; no surprise he was able to take her down. I’m glad he was there at the right time and the student didn’t cause even more injuries….or worse!

    Our daughter entered CSU Channel Islands in the fall of 2009, a year and a half after the Virginia Tech massacre where the campus security apparatus was criticized for a slow and timid response to the first shootings that probably contributed to the mass casualty, including the lack of an on campus tactical weapons unit to deal with the issue. During the orientation we received a presentation from the lieutenant (second in command) of the CI police force. (UC and CSU campus police department are actual sworn peace officers.) I remember his quote that still sends chills up and down my spine: “We cannot guarantee that nothing bad like the Virginia Tech shooting will start on this campus, but you should be assured that we have the personnel, training, equipment and will to stop it!”

    The sad truth is that no one can be guaranteed safety anywhere at any time. School campuses in nice areas are every bit as vulnerable as those in not-so-nice areas. In fact, it seems to me that the major school tragedies have occurred in upper middle class schools as opposed to those in “ghetto” neighborhoods. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0777958.html

    That’s a good point. I’m not “stats guy” (who may have more to say), but if you control for population growth as you suggested, the increase in poverty seems considerably less dramatic–though still sucky, of course.     Also, keep in mind that the national poverty rate in 2000 was 11.3%, our all-time low. Last year, it was up to 13.2%. If we kept national pace, which you might expect, considering that Southern California has been among the hardest hit areas, we would have been at 7.23%, right?

    I think your numbers reflex city growth. If you include the county, do you think the rate would be different? It is not clear to me if the article just applies to the “city” when the term suburb is used. In any case, the change for the city is not that significant. Thanks for unwinding the spin.

    28% based on absolute numbers is obviously very stark and dramatic, but a 57 basis point increase in RELATIVE poverty is not particularly good news, but certainly not catastrophic. The assertion that the burbs don’t know how to handle poverty is just something the writer pulled out of his butt that sounds right. The easiest way to reduce the percentage living in poverty is to price them out of housing by tear downs and gentrification!

    Amgen Tour! There are far more pressing needs for taxpayer dollars than paying the cost of the Amgen Tour! And yes I know the City will say the event is revenue neutral, to that I say baloney. Unless you are a business owner the benefit does not offset the cost. Less than 1% of the city population gives a hoot about Amgen and the bicycle seen.

    I’ll bite: Exactly what are the costs that the City pays (as in,, how much)? and Where did you get the 1% stat? Keep in mind that, in this case, we are a “Start” City this time around and the actual mileage inside the City (although not yet announced as far as I can see) will likely be minimal as they head out towards 1000 Oaks.

    1% is an observation based on the colorful dress I see peddling about town. As far as the cost, contact the city and the will provided the actual cost for the last event. Set-up, traffic control, additional law enforcement, etc. etc. They will claim they recover the cost in the form of additional tax revenue, but are not able to specific. My recollection is that the last time the event was here the cost to the taxpayers was about $300,000.00, but don’t hold me to the number. You may be able to apply the tax rate and do your own math. This event is all about helping business at the expense of taxpayers.

    Well I don’t know if I’m looking in the right spot, but the total Tourism budget for 2010-2011 is $400k, of which $100k is allocated to “support of qualified National events.” That would include the annual golf tournament and various other high school level national events unless I’m mistaken. http://apps.santa-clarita.com/ViewFile.aspx?Type=Agenda&ID=9622 I’m willing to bet that the $300k you’re remembering was 3 years ago when we hosted both an “End of” stage and the next day a “Start of” stage. Finishing venues always cost more because there is typically some sort of festival as well as significantly longer and more extensive street closures. As far as the 1%, I figured as much. I know a lot of non-cyclists who were very interested in coming out to see the event. Same people who aren’t artists that come out to the Art Walk, Non-Cowboys coming out to poetry festivals, Non-musicians that attend concerts in parks etc. etc. Do you think the City shouldn’t support ANY tourism? What specifically do YOU want the City to spend that money on?

    When did the city know they were going to have a piece of the Amgen tour? The budget was passed months ago. Besides, if you believe 100K will cover these events, I would recommend you ask the city for actual costs. What events would I support? None until the budget crisis is resolved.

    Can I make guesses about how much an event costs even though I have no experience in running events? I am going with 5. So between cash and I our uneducated guesses are between$ 5 and $300,000 give our take a few dollars.

    By the way, the 100k is seed money to lure the events to the city. The actual expense of holding the event would be in addition to the 100k seed money.

    As to the Ventura County Star article, those who want $200+ Million in new taxes spent on the chloride removal plant and the other goodies for Ventura County sound like they thought the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Sanitation Districts was a real contract. Not that the Sanitation District Board will listen, but the smart thing to do is put the rate increases on a real election ballot, like Proposition 218 requires, and the voters decide. If 2/3rds of the voters approve the rate increases, fine. If 2/3rds of the voters do not approve the rate increases, then the Sanitation District has a powerful tool to use to tell the Regional Water Quality Control Board to back off, because a vote under the State Constitution trumps the mere laws which RWQCB is trying to enforce. Then, of course, there’s the appellate case which says State mandates have to be funded by the State, specifically including compliance with regional water agencies’ dictates. The Sanitation Districts need to sue the State and the RWQCB to compel the State to pay for RWQCB’s unfunded mandates.

    The first I heard of the water problem was a Signal article that said the water board had fined the city less then 200K and had fined 6 flags almost a million dollars. Apparently at that time, the water board considered 6 flags the big polluter. Yet I haven’t heard anything about 6 flags cleaning up its mess. Am I missing something? I like avocados and strawberries. I’m too old for roller coasters and water slides. So to me the solution is obvious.

    @Jeff a comment on local eating establishments. I don’t know if both Rattler’s (mentioned) and Telly’s (not mentioned) both still do this but when I was a regular homeless shelter volunteer a few years back both establishments routinely donated enough complete delicious dinners to feed our homeless residents on many nights I volunteered. Costco also donated pizzas anytime I asked. When I think of patronizing local eating establishments, I try to spend my money with the “good guys” and I thought readers would like to know of these businesses and their generosity towards those less fortunate.

An article about second hand stores including the new Goodwill Store in Stevenson Ranch. The article mentions scvtalk.com and quotes “Jeff”, “Blazingmonk”, “Lvogel” and “GangFang”.     Shows your sense of humor too. I’ve requested info from the city. My interest has been piqued. Based on my own experience with organizing amateur bike races (admittedly a much lower scale event but with similar costs) and my attendance at the last start (2009), I find it hard to believe we would have to shell out as much as $300k. Even $150k seems high to me. It’s a rolling road closure with the entire peloton together…so no need to hold roads open for very long either before or after. Probably be on SCV roads less than 20 minutes once they pull out of the mall (if they do the same as 2009). All of the start line tents and blockades are most likely provided by the Tour organizers and are moved to each subsequent start location. Volunteers galore. Sponsors. Where is the cost? Sheriffs? Sure, I know they aren’t cheap, but $300k? City workers? Same. I’ll be happy to eat my words if I’m wrong.

    300K was spent on previous Amgen tours. It will be easy for the city to spend 150K on the next ride. The seed money alone, paid to beg for the tour, could have eaten half of that amount. No matter how much or how little the amount, the money has a better use in these economic times.

    City works are Salary, so very little cost. At most you would have a few expenditures and maybe some well deserved overtime for our local Sheriff’s deputy. If you were, you would know the additional taxes Obama proposes, will not reduce the current deficit by 1/3. At best the additional taxes will only offset the future spending the Hack Obama has in mind. By the way, you need to put a 1 in front of that four sonny.

When you attempt to engage anyone you just claim they don’t have all the facts, and never present any yourself or you just resort to “MORON, HA!” Or “IDIOT, HA!” Billy it is never too late for you to learn how to read and actually study a topic for once. Instead of being the little boy trapped in a old man’s body who has been sliding by his whole life.
