David Schlangen-Camarillo’s Version of David Gauny?

The Nebraska bride and I spent the weekend in Camarillo to spend time with our extremely cool youngest daughter, a sophomore at CSU-Channel Islands at their annual Family Weekend.  I always enjoy Camarillo which boasts an excellent coastal climate and a robust Old Town District which Newhall could take a lesson from, though in the late evening on a Saturday night this still sleepy burg makes Awesometown look positively like Times Square.

On this visit I could not help myself but notice the yard signs set up for Camarillo’s City Council election, which they hold on November 2 along with the general election.  I decided to research local politics to determine any parallels with the you know where, and oh my God!!!

The Camarillo City Council includes five at large members.  Three are up for re-election including:

Jan McDonald-12 year incumbent (An accountant and graduate of Cal Lutheran)

Charlotte Craven-24 year incumbent (New Mexico State alum)

Mike Morgan-30 year incumbent (retired probation officer)

Yes SCVTalkers the three incumbents hold 76 YEARS of incumbency between them.  When one includes the other two sitting council members it rolls up to 90!!

So with four candidates against these three long term incumbents one can guess where this is going, but enter young David Schlangen, an earnest and attractive 35 year old life long resident of Camarillo who seeks to usurp at least one of these seats.

So I went about trying to find out the political skinny on Camarillo, and here is all I could find with respect to the City Council Election:

  1. A website called Camarillo 365 that solicited comments on candidates on October 15 and has received zero to date;
  2. An LTE to the Ventura County Star singing the praises of incumbent Charlotte Craven.

Anyone with any insight on this race?  Does our young turk stand a chance?  We will know on November 3.

    Already I’m jealous. They hold their elections during the regular state-wide and nationwide electoral cycles, rather than in April. This is something Santa Clarita should do. I can’t think of any good reasons for holding our elections in April.

    This question was asked at a recent keystone council meeting. Their answer was it was to difficult for the county.

    Daddy Joe G is right. There is a legend that when the City was formed that the County could not run the elections along with the ones already existing on the November 2 ballots. Remember that the City Clerk actually runs this election. I don’t know if this is still true, but having an April election depresses turnout and gives a further edge to incumbents.

    So I went about trying to find out the political skinny on Camarillo Tim, Tim, Tim… This is hardly “ willfully ignorant of local political matters .” Your focus should be on those coastal breezes, not the incumbent windbags!

    Yes, I may have made a mistake though I can probably see living in Oxnard within walking distance of the beach. But from my research it looks like NO ONE cares what is going on in Camarillo so the incumbents should coast. Remember the robust discussion we had here about the City Council candidates and their is nothing even closely equivalent in Camarillo.

    I hate to say it but your charade of wanting to remain “willfully ignorant” is over. You are woefully immersed! “Tim Myers for Camarillo City Council!” (Green Party)

    Dave: This may be young Mr. Schangel’s last chance to run on the Gauny “Hair Party.” While his coif is currently immaculate one sees hints of a receding hairline and in five years he may be channeling the honorable Sterling King!

    Haha! I won’t throw stones re: receding hairlines. However, this problem does create natural term limits for Hair Party candidates!
