    Friday 6:30 PM I don’t want to step on ND’s or Jeff’s toes, but Jeff’s hero Don Ricketts, Esq. sent out an email this afternoon, to scvtalk.com and all other relevant press and blogs, as well as to the long list of “interested citizens”. Since Jeff is probably dining in a posh restaurant on K Street at this hour, I thought I’d post the message Jeff and others received, so scvtalk.com isn’t scooped ! “The County, and County Librarian Margaret Donellan Todd , through counsel, have advised SOL that they have not turned over private and confidential borrower registration and circulation records to the City or LSSI and that they will not do so without 20 days notice to SOL. (See attached.) Supervisor Michael Antonovich is believed to have played a major role in securing the confidentiality and privacy of the records for the time being. DONALD W.     I *think* I’ve got KO’s math – if you add Campaign Committee + Leadership PAC together, the three defense-related industries total $387k.

I heard somewhere it might cost the city over $1 million to put on! Where’s the outrage? Where’s the fiscal responsibility?     Fair enough. I received my information directly from the city (the link shows the actual amounts spent). I followed up with a specific question as to whether or not any up front fees (not included in the linked report) were paid. I received a voice mail from the city specifically saying there was no such up front “seed money” or ANY amounts paid. They were very specific. So in my opinion, your claim that there were fees paid has been directly denied by the city … twice. Either they lied, or you must believe they didn’t understand my question. You seem adamant in your claim … what exactly is your source? I would love to follow that up and throw it in the city’s face. you don’t have to lift a finger except to direct me to your source.     you have 2009 data which probably does not idenfiy all costs. Why would SCV get a free ride? With increasing cost, who would bring Amgen Tour of California back to Santa Cruz? Posted on: Thu, 09 Sep 2010 06:06:14 EDT Symbols: AMGN SANTA CRUZ, Sep 09, 2010 (Santa Cruz Sentinel – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) — A top official with the Amgen Tour of California, which has visited Santa Cruz the past two years, said Wednesday that the race can’t lower its financial demands on host cities because the tour itself is still pedaling uphill to break even. Michael Roth, vice president of communications for the Los Angeles-based sports and entertainment firm AEG, said the 5-year-old race is losing between $1 million and $2 million annually as revenues from sponsorships and TV rights fail to cover “logistical and infrastructure” costs associated with the eight-day race. “The last few years have not exactly been the most advantageous time,” Roth said. “It always takes several years to launch events. We believe in it and believe it will ultimately break even.” The increasing cost to cities for hosting a stage finish, estimated by local officials to exceed $200,000 for 2011′s race, was a key reason Santa Cruz pulled out of contention before the application deadline in mid-August. The city of Capitola, which also has struggled to chart a funding and operational plan, also passed on hosting the event last week after tour officials contacted the city shortly after Santa Cruz dropped out.

    Thank you for proving my point. The article you reference talks about a stage finish … not a stage start, nor a stage start AND finish (which is what the SCV did in 2008). It also says nothing about any so called “seed money.” If you looked at the link I provided, the $200k figure is reasonable based on the 2008 SCV actual costs … without anything for “seed,” and for a combination stage finish AND a start the next day. Stage finishes absolutely cost more because, as I stated in the original thread, there is much more going on. But for 2011, SCV is hosting ONLY a stage start. So the 2009 figures are a reasonable starting point. Do you think a net cost of $23k will be substantially higher 2 years later? How much higher? 10%? More? And where is your “seed money” of $200k? Come on Cash, the SCV will, once again, be put on a World stage for virtually no cost. What is the value of that to our city? I would argue that the value is far in excess of the cost both economically and from an intangible point of view.

    Scoot, seed money is money spent to lure the tour to a city. If if make you happy let’s call it bid. The city did not bring the tour here for free. World stage, come the owners of the tour are even claiming it to be a financial failure.

    Say it ain’t so Bucky! Are you just like the rest of the politicians? BTW, I am having a birthday party this weekend and Obama will attend to campaign for his Democrat buddies. Jon Stewart kicked Obama’s butt, yes Jon Stewart and not Glen Beck or Bill O’Reilly. Obama needs to make up for lost ground. Obama learned his lesson on the Stewart Show, so he is bringing his teleprompter. Seems he is lost when he is off script!

    Think Santa Clarita goes far to entice film production? No matter who they inconvenience! This includes the COC kids that can’t find a parking space because the film trucks are parked on campus. Parking is limited in the first place. Thanks D V-H.

    And lets not forget our brilliant presidents words from 2006 when democrats took over congress… “If President Bush is stubborn, refuses to take signals from the election that the American people are looking for a different approach, then we could get bogged down and not make progress.” Lets hope he is man enough to take his own advice. I doubt it!

    No, it’s a derivative of “tangerine.” So, in-tangerine, that is, all sweet and citrus-y. The city will receive sweet and citrus-y benefits. Who doesn’t want that? Not wanting that is downright Un-Merican. OK? Geez, do I have to teach you guys EVERYTHING!?

    Cash, or coosh if we are to remain consistent (Note to ND, look that up in your GAAP guide): call it seed, call it a bid, call it rooty-tooty-fresh-n-fruity … it wasn’t paid by the City of SCV in 2009 or 2008. There is a difference between the tour organizers making money and the city’s costs of the day (morning) they spent here. The city’s costs for a start of the Amgen tour in 2009 were roughly $23k. Why do I care if the Amgen Tour lost a ga-zillion dollars? That. Is. Irrelevant. We. Spent. $23k.

    We are not talking accounting 101. The City clearly pays for the event to come here. I submit to you that unless you do a forensic audit, you will never know the actual cost for the tour. For example, the 2009 numbers you provided do not cover fire or police and other embedded cost. No matter what the cost, the city has no business spending taxpayer money to bring it here. If the tour is such a money maker for the business community, let them pay for it.
