OMG…guess who I saw while dining at you know where?
Meeting and eating near John Boston, aka the resident SCV poet laureate, wordsmith and Dean emeritus of the University of SCV History & Folklore Dept. in -of all places- the legendary Way Station Coffee Shop was a singular moment in time, a marquee event, a dream come true, a red-letter day I will henceforth & forever circle on my calendar.
When he walked in, everyone knew who he was and greeted him by name. I approached cautiously, hoping he’d remember that we’d met at another legendary SCV place and time (Melody Ranch, during the Cowboy Festival) and, by golly, I think he actually remembered me.
I told him how much of a fan I was of his work throughout the years (reading John Boston columns is one of my earliest memories as a teen when I just moved to the SCV) and how glad I was that he stayed in the SCV. He was kind enough to listen to an unrequited fanboy and even pose for a picture with me.
Anyway, this topped 40 under 40 and all the amazing perks that came with it. And the breakfast wasn’t bad either. Hot damn! John Boston in the Way Station Coffee shop.
It doesn’t get more authentic than that. A perfect SCV moment.
