Andy P. Tells Us to Abandon ALL Hope on Libraries!

Andy Pattantyus (“Andy P”) was back on Friday, November 4 with the third installment in what I believed was his apology for the City of Santa Clarita’s takeover of County library branches, but if I am reading correctly, Andy has basically told us we in Santa Clarita are screwed when it comes to libraries.

Andy discusses the merits of three suburban Cleveland libraries, one of which he served as a trustee.  These libraries are highly rated by an independent index, and they have the drive throughs that Andy adores, but on other important issues they surely outstrip the three local library branches recently stolen, to wit:

  1. They are beautiful architecturally (Fail);
  2. The three branches reciprocate fluidly even though in different municipalities (Double fail); and
  3. The residents pay FOUR TIMES more in taxes to support these great libraries then we have done up to now (Triple fail.)

When it comes to the City and their handful of apologists on the library takeover one feels that one is talking to a recalcitrant three year old.  They just refuse to hear that the reason everyone is upset is because the thing that made the LA County system desirable was the ENTIRE system, and not just how it existed within the four walls of the three City located branches.

More cracks are showing in the City’s plan.  Laurie Ender recently stumped on Facebook to solicit applications for the City’s late in the day Library Advisory Board.  This indicates that the only people who have applied are people publicly against the takeover, much like occurred in the Open Space Initiative Oversight Committee, so look forward to an extension of the application period to corral more tractable members (or two, or three).

Now Laurie Ender has hitched her political wagon to this unpopular move, but I predict right now that she will sail into office in 2012 with no problem, despite the upset this takeover has caused.

    Oh Petz!! That explains why the plea on Facebook. All of these Oversight Commissions are populated with weaklings who they know will not say anything without the permission of the Overlord. Look for three extensions of the application period to keep Petz off the Advisory Commission.

    It’s not fair to say all overight committees are weak. I know Alan Ferdman and Spence Leafdale on the Open Space committee would not hesitate to speak up if something was amiss. To Jeff’s point – the city will clearly not allow anyone opposed to the takeover on the committee. I’ve experienced their methods firsthand.

    The Overlord is the collective of the City Council and City professional management.

    I wish he would just stop writing these–they’re embarrassing to read. In “Part 2″ he wondered if there were children’s sections, book drop-offs, the Internet, and water available at Santa Clarita libraries. Now he seems to think that paying $104 in library taxes per person is better than $28 per person, that extra $76 apparently covering costs associated with a drive-through windows and a museum displaying the work of an obscure American ceramicist. He’s still using the meaningless, statistically indefensible HALPR index, too.

    IHeart: I think he must have told Laurie E. about how he was a former library trustee, and how he despised the County Library because he had to stand in line for four minutes in 2000, and so volunteered to write this four part apology, which is now devolving into idiocy. Is Laurie Ender going to now endorse a quadrupling of the library parcel tax?

    When it comes to how much we pay for Country of Los Angeles Library Services $28 per parcel is only part of the answer. According to the County 3.6% of the General Tax Levy also goes toward Library Services. That 3.6% contribution amounts to approx $4 million per year over and above the $28 Special Library Tax.

    Utilizing #EnderMath, since the only people that have applied for the commission are against the City takeover, there must be several hundred thousand potential applicants out there that SUPPORT the CTO …they just need a little more time to apply. *This message paid for by the IDontLikeLaurieEnder PAC

    I can’t wait till this time next year when folks are enjoying the smoothly operating libraries and all these posts & comments are completely forgotten. Unless there’s no possible way that a new, non-county system could be an improvement…
