  • A 10 year old boy said a man tried to grab him while he was walking to McGrath Elementary school yesterday morning. The boy broke free and ran to a woman who was walking her dog. Cops say it was an attempted kidnapping and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the man SIGNAL, KHTS
  • The jury in the Josh Pipho murder case has found the defendant, Michael Dean Stephens, guilty of second degree murder. The jury hung on charges of attempted murder for Stephens. Stephens will be sentenced in December. SIGNAL, KHTS
  • The Valencia Industrial center will finally be getting some bike lanes and Santa Clarita Transit will get precise numbers on the amount of people who ride the bus system after last night’s brief, uneventful City Council meeting KHTS Or was it uneventful? I HEART SCV
  • Everywhere LSSI pitches its services, it upsets library users and community members. The company is trying to take over a system in Texas now DALLAS NEWS
  • Ken Pulskamp and City leaders are very excited about the additional shops coming to Westfield Town Center mall, saying that 180,000 sq. ft. addition will generate an additional $1 million in sales tax revenue for the city. The city expedited its permitting process and delayed fees for the venture. Also, Laurene Weste says there will be “good jobs” at the new shopping area. DAILY NEWS

    Yes and that is why it is brilliant. Even the Valencia Auto Park has ran with it. Valencia needed to stop taking itself so serious.

    On Stephens Verdict: Depending on the sentencing, Michael Stephens with time served (he has been incarcerated for three years pending trial) could be paroled by 2015, not a bad deal for a homicide. Otherwise I think the verdict was appropriate and the jury came up with a verdict on the heaviest charge they could. From the testimony it appeared that everyone agreed that the whole thing was a drug and alcohol fueled brawl so it is hard to see how Stephens could have formed the premeditation and planning necessary to support a first degree murder charge. I also believed they deadlocked on the Weitz attempted murder charge because Weitz was wielding a baseball bat and busting windshields during the brawl, which clouds the issue of self defense. Everyone seems to agree that Pipho was only using his fists, which does not generally support the use of deadly force in opposition. On our very block about a year ago a similar incident occurred at a party of 18 to 20 somethings without any “adults.” No one was killed, thankfully, but a young man we know carries a permanent colostomy bag due to a stab wound from a screwdriver.

    Another horrible crash at Golden Valley and Plum Canyon, where I live and my wife and kids cross everyday. People need to SLOW DOWN!

    My wife drove past it this morning. She said it looked really bad. I’ve been checking KHTS and The Signal’s web sites but of course there’s nothing about it.

    Re: The Mall 40 stores? I only know of 3: William Sonoma, Sephora, and Lucky Brand Jeans. What are the other stores? I’m not a big mall shopper, but that mall needs stronger anchor stores–a Macy’s with better merchandise (a better blend of high, middle, and low end goods) and a Nordstrom in addition to a revamped JC Penney or Sears, which currently look shabby and outdated. This way, you have a variety of stores that appeal to a variety of folks with a variety of needs. I hope the smaller stores will cater to all kinds of folks, too, and not just high end or at the other extreme, those weird off-brand stores that are currently in the main mall (you know the ones, the store with the mish-mash of house decor, the store of spangly fake jewelry and knicknacks, etc.)

    I just saw the list of stores. I was wrong about Lucky coming to town. I don’t know. Seems like a good mix of stuff. It’ll be nice that the area is finally complete.

    What is deceiving is that some of the stores that are opening in the Patios area come from other areas of the mall. As an example, Chicos was given a financial incentive to move from their current location on Town Center Drive to a new location at the Patios. So how is that adding to the number of stores there? From what I have heard, Westfield wants to turn Town Center Drive to a youth-oriented shopping area and giving the current stores that cater to older shoppers monetary incentives to move out.

    It’s Ender math. You only count the increases and don’t net out the decreases, so at the end of five years Westfield has 6,000 stores and generates $1 billion in sales tax revenue.

    The city of Santa Clarita contracts with MV Transportation to provide service for Santa Clarita Transit buses. About 25,000 riders take the bus daily, according to estimates, including many high school and junior high school students whose schools offer no bus service. 25,000 riders at the cost of $19,000,000.00- fares= cost per year to taxpayers.

    I thnk Valencia should bring back the rainbow logo and start a “FabulousTown” campaign.
