The city’s budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year will, for the first time in three years, include no budget cuts. No word on whether a hiring freeze will be lifted; I’ve heard in the past that the City plans on not hiring anyone until possibly 2015 or so. SIGNAL
State Senate candidates Darren Parker and Sharon Runner debated each other and the issues at SCVTV yesterday. The two candidates agree on some issues, particularly on the need for enterprise zone programs and redevelopment agencies. Haven’t watched the debate yet; more on this later SIGNAL
San Joaquin County supervisors are set to reject a bid by LSSI to run the County’s public libraries. Library supporters in Stockton circulated a petition against privatization and the County supes, apparently, listened. PAPER
Santa Clarita Transit is implementing QR codes at bus stops throughout town. You’ve probably seen these things- they are the next evolution of bar codes. You take your phone, take a picture of the QR code, and a bus schedule will be downloaded to your phone. Pretty cool. CITY BRIEFS
New NFL stadium in downtown LA would retractable roof and would anchor an expansion and renovation of Los Angeles’ Convention Center. Though Mayor Villaraigosa is hot on the idea, LA Councilmembers aren’t entirely sold and are worried about the cost LA TIMES
The man in charge of the Newhall community center’s sports program got a warm profile in the Signal today. Efren Galindo, 32, grew up in Newhall and told the paper how his strong father, a migrant farmworker, kept him from joining gangs. He also helped raise his two siblings while obtaining a master’s degree from CSUN. SIGNAL
Two girls, once joined at the head, visited an SCV rotary club yesterday. The girls were separated by doctors at UCLA in 2002. Interesting story. KHTS
Santa Clarita Water District is moving out of its little Soledad Canyon location . The water supplier says its new facility, up in Centre Pointe Parkway area, is more energy efficient. SIGNAL
City’s new landscape irrigation system can be managed through a wireless internet-connected system and can calculate how much water is needed based on weather. The system is expected to save 180 million gallons of water a year. SIGNAL
Carl’s Jr. restaurant chain threatens to move headquarters out of Carpinteria and to our arch-nemesis Texas. But it was all bluster; the CEO says he’s decided to stay now LA TIMES

Not surprised about William S. Hart. Before he did cowboy pics he was a classically trained theater active performing a lot of works by William S. on the boards in New York. Probably always thought that films were low brow, though it made him wealthy and he had a ball.

I wonder if the Santa Clarita Water Division will take advantage of the “Cash for Headquarters” program and when the old facility will be demolished.

From Carl’s Jr. article: “Puzder, back now in sunny SoCal, says that at this point there are more reasons to stay in California than to go. But he says that every time the state comes up with new regulations, there are more reasons to leave.” Looks like it is only a matter of time and Carl’s roots in CA that is keeping it here now. When is this state going to wise up and be more business friendly? The voters in their infinite wisdom voted down prop 23 and continued to send the Dems to Sacramento last year. So AB32 that will drive more businesses away and the Dems who love regulation will continue to prevail.

CKE was aquired by Apollo Mgmt. last year and you can bet they are looking for ways to lower costs to increase the ROI. The company has store expansion plans in TX and Karcher’s grandchildren run a very successful franchise there.

Poor kid from the wrong side of town orphaned at a relatively young age ends up with a Master’s Degree! I need to show this to our youngest son when he bitches and whines about his life.

Regarding the Efren Galindo article in today’s Signal: What a great story about a young man truly making a difference! A young man of Hispanic ancestry who is working hard to earn a better future and rose above the negative influences he was exposed to as a child in the “barrio”. Kudos to his parents (QEPD/RIP) for being strict parents and keeping him in line too. I do not personally know Efren but I have to say I am very proud of this young man for making something of himself despite the odds and becoming a positive role model for so many young people who are exposed to the scourge of drugs, gangs, domestic violence, and hopelessness. Good for you Efren!!! Also, please note that the residents of Newhall are not running to TBB and Ferdman complaining that Community Preservation Officer Daniel Rivas is being “unfair and threatening them” for advising them that their properties have issues that need to be addressed. Good job City of Santa Clarita Community Preservation Officer Daniel Rivas and the City for working hard to improve all neighborhoods within the City needing attention. Kudos to the residents of Newhall for not being “cry babies” too.

I agree, BG-H, Community Preservation does a good job. Ferdman wanted the City to clean up his neighborhood but, when it was discovered there were violations on his and some of his buddies properties, he cried and complained that officer was “unfair and threatening” too.

Water – the key point is that the wireless system “can be controlled remotely” – let’s hope some one is trained to program it. I cannot count the number of times the sprinklers at Central Park have been on in the rain.
