Really Signal?

The Signal’s new advertisement-as-breaking-news strategy hit my inbox last night:

Stuff like this detracts from the journalists at The Signal who actually work hard to keep us informed and intelligent about local issues.

Really Signal?

  5. JayceMarch 2, 2011 at 12:08 pm
I was cracking up when I got that yesterday also. Um breaking news that already happened that isn’t really breaking in the first place maybe.
  6. James McNultyMarch 2, 2011 at 12:51 pm
Now you are speaking my language.
  7. Need for Involved CitizenryMarch 2, 2011 at 12:58 pm
How can anyone take the Signal seriously? They have no journalistic integrity.
  8. AlpinerMarch 2, 2011 at 1:18 pm
    Totally ridiculous.
  9. James McNultyMarch 2, 2011 at 1:25 pm
Totally ridiculous. They should get rid of these idiots like that Jay Harn guy
  10. MikeMarch 2, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Jay Harn did a great job at TMS.

No commercial enterprise ever wants your personal contact info just to keep you “informed.” They want to sell you something or they want to sell your information or patronage to someone else. I would think all you techno-geek hipsters would be more saavy to that fact. The Signal is no better or worse in this respect than any other business.
  12. Whiskey Tango FoxtrotMarch 2, 2011 at 1:57 pm
    Cheeky.

Crime reporting in other town: http://www.fillmoregazette.com/front-page/brother-accused-killing-sister And other town follow up story: http://www.fillmoregazette.com/front-page/trial-set-brother-accused-killing-sister The Signal crime reporting: http://www.the-signal.com/section/36/article/40951/
  14. TiredMarch 2, 2011 at 4:19 pm
That’s a classic “apples and oranges” argument, Sam. A guy accused of threatening to kill someone is not the same as a guy accused of actually killing someone, legally or in newsworthiness. It’s like pointing to the Sears Tower in Chicago as evidence that new houses in Valencia just aren’t built like they used to be. I think you’d find The Signal’s reporting is actually pretty good in major crime cases. The “breaking news” about a sub shop and the absolutely disgusting “subscribe-for-charity” scheme, however, show how some people there do not have the public good in mind.
  15. HermanMarch 2, 2011 at 3:47 pm
    The Signal is still around?
  16. Josh PremakoMarch 3, 2011 at 12:47 pm
It is. And for better or worse, it’s the only daily paper focused on covering the SCV.

News Alert: Two more brave military men were shot by a devout __ __ __ __ __ __ today in Germany and we are assured that it was a crime and not terrorism. When will Obama wake up to the threat facing our country? Why wasn’t Col Hassan prosecuted and executed ? Why won’t they ask Obama about the Lieberman report that clearly showed political correctness allowed Hassan to fester in the ranks? Why does KSM languish in a cell rather than be prosecuted for his evil deed?
  18. Mr PerezMarch 2, 2011 at 6:52 pm
God rest their souls is the first and foremost importance that we should reflect upon. An investigation will follow and the murderer will be found guilty. Unfortunately it happened and did such in Germany where they are lenient. What are you doing for lunch tomorrow Petz?
  19. Whiskey Tango FoxtrotMarch 2, 2011 at 9:30 pm
The suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire. Evidently the German prosecutor has translated that to mean “Give me your wallet”. Lovely.
  20. Mr PerezMarch 2, 2011 at 10:22 pm
    Seriously?
  21. Petz-aka Saugus SteveMarch 3, 2011 at 5:30 am
How about the Persia Restaurant at Seco/Bouquet?
  22. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 11:07 am
Sorry, duty calls and lunch will be a no go. Maybe coffee at Chick-fil-a in the morning.
  23. Petz-aka Saugus SteveMarch 3, 2011 at 11:42 am
I will be meeting some men there from 7:30 to 8:30-so after that? 661-609-1739
  24. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 12:25 pm
I will probably bike my happy self there a little bit before 0830, as long as tonights work out doesnt go bad.
  25. CC Dreamin'March 2, 2011 at 11:11 pm
Awww snap! I guess this Petz guy wants to start rounding up Muslim people like they did the Japanese, Black, and anyone non-White and Christian. I dont remember but did they round up white guys who werent happy with their democrat president after McVeigh did his terrorist act in our country?? Probably not just like they didnt imprison the KKK after their crimes because its alright to do it if you’re white but dont clown if you’re brown.
  26. HermanMarch 3, 2011 at 6:57 am
    Muslim isn’t a race.
  27. CC Dreamin'March 3, 2011 at 11:47 am
Good observation Herman Munster the reality that those people dont look you or go to your church and makes it easier to put them in internment camps or drop bombs on. And all this because you believe in guilt by association.
  28. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 12:29 pm
I would have to disagree a little bit because there are some Christian, Jewish, and Muslim groups in America who are standing together and fighting hate on all sides. In Islam we have something called “Nafs.” It is loosely translated as your “ego” or your inward existence. In life it is easy to give into this inward existence and let hate, anger, jealousy, or dislike creep in. A better man can fight these negative attributes and create a positive environment no matter what their religious belief is.
  29. HermanMarch 3, 2011 at 12:53 pm
How do you know what I look like?
  30. HermanMarch 3, 2011 at 1:10 pm
Wht weren’t you at the Way Station?
  31. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 2:23 pm
    Who, me?
  32. HermanMarch 3, 2011 at 6:21 pm
Sorry, had you confused with the other punk.
  33. Mr Perez aka DilligafMarch 3, 2011 at 7:58 pm
I would at ease your comments when addressing me.
  34. HermanMarch 3, 2011 at 10:29 pm
Now I’m really sorry, Mr. Perez, no, not you. I didn’t read the name of the author before responding. You sir are no punk.
  35. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 11:29 pm
Thank you for addressing that and no hard feelings.
  36. NateMarch 3, 2011 at 9:46 am
What exactly is he not facing? What could have been done to avoid this?
  37. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 12:32 pm
He is still awaiting trial since they are deliberating over how to proceed. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_fort_hood_shooting They could put him to death or in jail for life. I personally am opting for the execution since not only did he commit murder, he was also a traitor in the highest sense of the word.
  38. JeffMarch 3, 2011 at 10:05 am
I don’t want to beat up on the Signal too much. This was a mistake, not something intentional. It’s a credit to the Signal that the community takes their breaking news alerts so seriously. They set the bar high for breaking news alerts.
  39. Mr PerezMarch 3, 2011 at 11:11 am
I saw the Twitter apology from them that it was a Marketing test and they said it wouldn’t happen again.
  40. Samuel AdamsMarch 3, 2011 at 3:42 pm
Sort of like the L.A. Times stating they would never put an ad on their front page again…..
  41. Mr Perez aka DilligafMarch 3, 2011 at 3:46 pm
