That didn’t take long

In a demonstration of how serious local GOPers are about the budget and working together across party lines, the local GOP wants people to show up tomorrow with bull horns at Hart High to greet Jerry Brown (they don’t even mention that Cam Smyth will be there too):

I wonder if many parents in the SCV automatically associate teachers and police officers with labor unions first and foremost. That would seem to be a secondary consideration  in my mind. The people with children in local schools that I know of don’t associate their kid’s teacher with some big powerful union (first and foremost anyway).

As for cops- well there’s a whole bunch of descriptors I think of before the words “labor union” enter my mind.

Anyway this should be quite a treat for Hart High students tomorrow, though I seriously doubt there will be “thousands” of SCVers on Newhall Avenue. Heck, I bet most of the SCV’s true-blue conservatives hardly ever come to the gang-infested streets on my side of town where the only white people are often parole officers, police men or bounty hunters.

    Any reason to get out and yell for these particular breed of Repub. Shames the rest of ‘em, but have at it. I’ll enjoy the circus.

    Meeting is for educators and local law enforcement. The school district administration is coordinating the event and three of the four education speakers are not teachers. While I understand that some are frustrated by this, I would hope that those that plan to come with bullhorns and signs remember that this meeting is taking place at a school that is in session and that there will be students on campus during this time.

    If they want to hold a rally and blame someone they should link to the list of the top 250 indivduals and corporations that owe almost $7 billion in taxes to California. I can’t guarantee it but I don’t think there are any unions or union members on the list. http://californiawatch.org/dailyreport/state-tells-delinquent-taxpayers-pay-9895 I am thankful for teachers, social workers, nurses, librarians, police, fire etc. Good middle class jobs is what is needed in this country- both private and public!

    Shame on them for scheduling it at a school rather than a local business or GOP headquarters. Larry Rassmussen could have allowed them to use a larger space in a safer area. The parking near Hart High is terrible. It is not appropriate for a Dem to attend a school whose mascot is the Indian. Great to be getting the passion back.

    No they shouldn’t. Schools rightly restrict who is allowed on campus. As a parent, I’m sure you support that at your kids’ schools.

    This time I have to side with “needs to be an open meeting guys”. Yesterday, the press release in the signal was; “Brown will be accompanied by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, … TO TALK TO THE PUBLIC about extending certain taxes …. Smyth said he was interested in HEARING FIRSTHAND WHAT THE PEOPLE in his district HAD TO SAY about the budget issue. Today, it has turned into Gov. Jerry Brown will visit Santa Clarita on Thursday as part of an INVITATION-ONLY meeting with local educators, law enforcement and community leaders…. TO DISCUSS THE BUDGET CRISES WITH THOSE AFFECTED BY IT.. Could it be that Brown and Smyth do not think California budget problems affect the rest of us? Could it be we are not important? They should be reminded, we are the group that will ultimately pay for those proposed tax increases and state government mismanagement.

    It was always an invite only. The Signal reported the event incorrectly. That should not really be a surprise to anyone who lives in this valley.

    Every now and again, I feel bad for elected public officials. No matter what, they can’t do right. Even Sarah Palin gets a flash of sympathy from me, however minuscule and fleeting. Mostly I wish she would douche with fire, but you know what I mean.

    Hmmm, invite only on a taxpayer-paid school campus? During school hours? Sounds like misuse of public funds and facilities.

    The First Amendment right to free speech and public assembly for redress of grievance a non issue? So now the call is out for extra police patrols around the high school to protect the protected class from angry GOPPers and tea partiers . Are you kidding me?     Now you’re just being mean! Has your right to redress of grievance been taken away from you? No it hasn’t. Politicians on both sides of the fence plan events just like this. Even Community Town Hall meetings (Like the one Paul Ryan was shouted down at in Wisconsin by his own constituents) are by invite only. If the local GOP wants to act on the mob mentality with their bullhorns and bullsh*t snarky limos, then go right ahead and “address your grievances.” No one’s stopping you. And watch the name calling, Mr. Petz! You’re making our tait a’ taits less and less fun.

    Read online the other day that Brown was proposing for California Prison officers new deals in their contract including eight weeks vacation, wonder if anyone will be able to ask Brown if this is his payoff for their support in the last election. Then I wonder what else he will offer the other unions for their support.

    It’s kind of tough having it both ways. For years candidates and politicians alike have understood that being “tough on crime” is great for votes. So we’ve developed such lovely laws as “three strikes” and have allowed D.A.’s to dictate drug sentencing (taking it out of the hands of judges). Now that prisons are overcrowded, we’re complaining about how much prison guards get paid. The prison guard unions deftly leveraged these politics to their own end. So how does this problem get solved? Pay for more guards? Or realign sentencing policies and rehabilitation efforts to lessen the prison population?
