Friendly Valley Social Club, For the Win

Some shameless, lighthearted plugging for a minute: our trivia team, The Friendly Valley Social Club (The Team Formerly Known As The Newsmakers), has been on quite a tear. Every Wednesday, we play against a dozen or so other teams (many of them quite fierce) at Chuy’s in Newhall-upon-Stevenson Ranch. It’s played in the style of UK pub trivia and hosted by King Trivia, who runs similar games in 46 restaurants and bars throughout Southern California.

Over the last three months, King Trivia has been tallying the scores of the hundreds of teams that play.  Lately we’ve been hot, winning 10 out of the last 15 weeks at Chuy’s. In all of Southern California, The Friendly Valley Social Club placed 7th overall, and six of us will proudly represent the SCV tonight in Los Angeles for the final match against the top 31 teams.

Jeff and I started this team a few years back, on a tip from IHeartSCV.  Many in the SCVtalk orbit have been on this team, through one incarnation or another, and SCVtalk will be well represented tonight by myself, Tim, Scott W. (Scooter) and Mike Cruz, who is also an élite Magazine “Nifty Under Fifty” honoree. Friends Collin and Mary round out the bunch.

Wish us luck! Or root against us! Either way, if we win, there will be a bash and you might be invited.

    Good luck, Mr. Devlin et al. Kick some ass seems inappropriate, so kick some brains. P.S. Thoughts on Action Trivia at Rose & Crown, the original seat of SCV Trivia?

    IHeart, you’re always a step ahead. I didn’t know that Rose & Crown had a new game. Looks like the same people also run a game at the wing place in Castaic. This is tempting.

    Mike, three questions: Do each of the team members have an area of “expertise?” Do competitions limit themselves to certain subjects? In this day of “smart phones” how do you keep contestants from cheating?

    a) on a normal week, it’s just a matter of who shows up. For the finals, we could only bring 6. I think the best mix is not unlike the NBA: two all-around trivia stars with strong role players. I tried to balance interests and ages. Age is important, because some things you know because you were there. It was funny to see a team congratulate themselves for recognizing a picture of Mario Cuomo. b) No, just about anything is fair game. c) no phones out during play, period, or you get a zero.

    UPDATE: We finished tied for 3rd. We were 1, 2 or 3 the whole game, but one team broke away from everyone at the end. The important lesson here: Oscar winners, like state capitols, are a mater of specific knowledge and not intuition. It took our whole team to make it happen. It was a great mix.
