LASD DUI Checkpoint catches no DUI drivers

They threw a DUI Checkpoint party on Lyons last night but no DUI drivers came:
A DUI Checkpoint was conducted on February 24, 2012, from 1800 hours to 0200 hours onSaturday morning. The goal of the checkpoint is to educate the community on the hazardsof drunk driving while enforcing the D.U.I. laws of the State of California. The checkpoint isan ongoing attempt to safely remove drunk drivers from our roadways. The location of thecheckpoint was based on D.U.I. related activity in that area. 968 vehicles passed throughthe checkpoint. Of those vehicles, 953 were screened. Six drivers were cited for beingunlicensed. Nine others received various citations in violation of the Vehicle Code. Fivedrivers were cited for driving on a suspended license. Their cars were impounded for thirtydays.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.

Usually Deputies catch a handful of drunk drivers at these routine and frequent checkpoints. It seems odd that no one driving east on Lyons last night from 6pm to 2am was driving under the influence, but nearly 1000 drivers were screened and no arrests for DUI were made.

In one way, it wasn't a successful DUI enforcement checkpoint in that no drunk drivers were caught. In another equally valid way, it was a 100% successful DUI enforcement checkpoint in that no drunk drivers were caught.

Maybe nobody on the south side of down was driving drunk last night. Or maybe drunk drivers have the presence of mind to avoid the bigthoroughfaresin town as a result of these frequent DUI checkpoints. But such theoretical drivers are drunk and therefore not so rational in the first place.

If this continues maybe we call these license & registration (Papers please!) checkpoints rather than DUI checkpoints.
