February 28, 2012 Daily Brief-”Another Day in February” Edition

  • EXPLOSIVE NEWS from the 805, shared with us by Dr. Lee Rogers, Democratic candidate for the 25th District Congressional seat currently occupied by Buck McKeon.  It appears that one Catherine Wright  from Simi Valley, the daughter of a former Republican State Senator, has entered the race for the 25th District as of February23.  We know the IHOP Repub crowd is really good at being against Buck McKeon, but will they carb up on a tall stack and go out and actually support a Republican alternative?  For her sheer gumption Catherine Wright has already earned my vote, and the vote of my four dogs and 16 goldfish that the nice people from ACORN registered in 2008!

    UPDATE:  MISFIRE!  Look at all these great articles about “Victoria” Catherine Wright and her Moms, former Assembly Member/State Senator Cathie Wright, which detail how the mother attempted to intervene for her daughter in a one-daughter traffic crime wave in the wild and wooly late 80′s and early 90′s.   I guess the IHOP crowd will have to go back to hatin’ on Buck and Patricia after all.

  • Its that time of year.  SIGNAL  reports the issuing of over 150 layoff notices by the Saugus Union, Newhall and Sulphur Springs School Districts, with over half coming from the SUSD.  Hart and Castaic District will not issue layoff notices this year.
  • Randy Morton, a son of the state of Georgia and long time employee of Morris Media, The Signal’s parent company, gets named publisher replacing Ian Lamont who departed some time ago.  SIGNAL  I am sure we will learn more about him in days and weeks to come but from his picture he is rockin’ an 80′s ‘stache for sure!
  • Something wrong with this business model.  Lone thief makes off with purse from Trader Joe’s parking lot with three other gentleman AND they all get caught.  SIGNAL
  • Re the previous item.  So I am a criminal that steals $5K in pipe from a building site in Ojai and then drive over to Rioux Park in Stevenson Ranch where I get busted by Park Police who find I have meth for good measure.  SIGNAL  Makes perfect sense, right?
  • So maybe Jon Hatami is right and Canyon Country is the nexus of crime?  SIGNAL reports sentencing of Canyon Country nurse and minister for somewhere north of $14 million of Medicare fraud.
  • Snow on the Grapevine turns the 5 freeway at Hasley Canyon into a giant truckers’ motel.  SCVNEWS  I hope everyone took it easy on their travels because SCVTALK cannot afford to lose a customer!
  • With 13 days until the absentee ballots drop the SIGNAL  continues the City happy news with the “possibility” the City might purchase ten new and very green compressed natural gas buses.  That should get the casual voters excited, right?
  • Missed this yesterday but a DEMOCRAT rags on Buck and Patricia McKeon over at the WRB.  Hasn’t been necessary up to now because elements of the Republican Party have done an incredibly effective and vicious job tearing down the Congressman.
  • We generally don’t talk about national politics on this blog but I am genuinely worried about the mental health of my SCV friends who are “enthusiastic” Romney supporters if today’s Arizona and Michigan primaries don’t go well for him.  I spend a fair amount of time outside the SCV and I have found NO Romney supporters elsewhere.  Maybe that is the problem?

    “Snow on the Grapevine turns the 5 freeway at Hasley Canyon into a giant truckers’ motel.” The Old Road was backed up to Hasley too. If they build the Castaic HS as planned with the only access being from Castaic this won’t be a problem?

    And how would those same Castaic parretns get hoem afte rpicking up their kids if the school was at any other location? Problem is the same. The real problem is that the CHP bowes to political pressure from Castaic truck businesses and motels that love to have jammed streets. CHP should detour trucks earlier, along 126, and leave I-5 clear for residents. Town Council advocated this but they didn’t listen. Money talked louder.

    Yesterday I agreed to give one of my daughter’s friends a ride home to Castaic from Valencia, not knowing that the northbound 5 was closed. Fortunately, it was relatively early and I took The Old Road or I would have been stuck in that mess. The 126 detour plan sounds smart to me.

    Access from Hasley Cyn. should be a part of the requirements to build the school at the proposed site. That would eliminate the problem of the 5 closing.

    I still think Romney will be the nominee, but I’m really enjoying the fact that Santorum is making him sweat. At least Santorum has a core and an identity. No one likes Romney because no one really knows who he is. And the casual reminders of how wealthy he is doesn’t help (I only made $300,000 on speeches, I’m friends with NASCAR team owners, corporations are people, I bet you $10,000, etc) and only reinforces the view that he’s the corporate a**hole who came in and fired your dad/close friend. Then again, maybe that’s the only genuine thing about him. He likes to lord his money over everyone.

    Jeff: I have a good friend who actually met Mitt Romney at one of those $3k local fundraisers in 2008 and his take was that while Mitt may have a good relationship with him family and a few close friends he strikes one as a guy who could really care less about meeting the people at the fundraiser and immediately forgot their names after he was introduced if he even heard them in the first place.

    McKeon deserves plenty, and I’m glad to see another Democratic voice in the local blogosphere, but I think that piece in the WRB reaches too far and gets a few key points wrong. The matter of McKeon’s staff coordinating political activities for his wife’s Assembly race is a very bad thing, so I’m with him all the way there. But contrary to what the author asserts, Elton Gallegly had not declared for office at all. He really sat on his hands for a few months and then announced his retirement on January 7. The memo was dated January 6, but that’s likely a typo, since the Countrywide news broke on the 16th. A Catherine Wright candidacy doesn’t impress me, and I think it would be ironic if McKeon-antis get excited at hearing that Cathy Wright’s daughter is running (without knowing anything aside from who her mother is). Lee Rogers on the other hand? I like what I see. The prospect of Buck losing is a long shot, but I don’t think we’re through hearing about scandals that play into the core narrative of soft, but steady corruption. The only way he loses his by being wounded by scandal(s) and against an opponent with a significant warchest. There isn’t enough money in the district to defeat Buck. It would have to be national money, and a GOP challenger isn’t going to get it. A mortally wounded Buck plus a DNC that smells blood plus a strong, serious and center-leaning candidate in a district that voted for Obama in 2008…it just might add up to something.

    Is this former Assemblywoman/Senator Wright’s daughter who was part of a Willie Brown scandel in the late 80′s regarding fixing 20 plus traffic tickets? Sounds like little competion for our Buck.

    Old stories from Simi Valley. Cathie Wright was such a pain in the behind to local developers, when she was on the Simi Valley City Council, that the local developers financed Mrs. Wright’s run for the Assembly. They figured it was a good way to get her out of their hair, because she was the female version of a thug. They didn’t succeed. She meddled in all sorts of business not her own from an office in Sacramento. Also, Assemblywoman Wright used to be a professional singer, and would come to meetings of the Simi Valley Republican Women’s Club and sing to its members. The younger women members felt tortured by her performances but were unable to leave. So let’s hope that if she is a candidate “young” Ms. Wright has grown up, calmed down, and learned from her mother’s mistakes.

    Oh you’ve got to read this blog! The misspellings and poor grammar are to die for! Also, Ms. Wright says that she is running in the 26th District and not the 25th District as shown on the ballot proof at the behest of her mother, who sadly seems to be in extremely poor health. Also, ironically, Ms. Wright is working on a Masters in Criminal Justice and Security (see the irony). I smell DeVry and/or University of Phoenix!

    For those of a certain age it appears that Ms. Wright was the equivalent of the Senator Phogbound character from Lil Abner’s Dogpatch. The good citizens of Dogpatch kept voting for him to go to Washington because they didn’t want him around Dogpatch!

    I wish Randy Morton well. Knowing him and the respect he gets within the Morris Multimedia organization, I believe two things this town needs will occur. For the first time in a very long time, this new Signal publisher will be given the necessary time and space to make the changes at the newspaper that are necessary to move things significantly forward, both in coverage and profitability. And because he comes from Statesboro, a Morris newspaper that has been a innovation leader, he has the respect of management and the experience to try new things and bring true change to the Signal. http://www.statesboroherald.com/

    Highly illegal and talk about breakin’ the debt in all kinds of pieces. It does remind me of a storied relayed to me one time. In the Reserve you serve 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks typically in the summer. Well, this soldier goes on his 2 week training and while he is gone his wife called the unit frantic trying to explain that she needed to pay his “monthly dues” so he wasn’t kicked out of the Army. That guy had some real splainin’ to do when he came home hahahaha.
