A Big Friday Night in Valencia (and Valencia Adjacent)!

Two gentleman learned a valuable lesson on Friday, March 16.  Don’t rob a place where the white folk like to shop, steal stuff they like to buy and especially don’t steal stuff that has a GPS chip implanted that can locate it within 50 feet.

SCVNEWS  has all the details.  After two gentlemen allegedly robbed the ATT store adjacent to Loews of several iPhones and iPads they dumped their (stolen) getaway car in front of the Hyatt which led to a floor to floor search of that establishment.  Then someone thought to ping one of the GPS chips in the Apple devices (curse you Steve Jobs!) and the perpetrators were arrested in the Hyde Park area of LA.

Even more despairing is the fact that iPhones and 3 or 4G enabled iPads have NO value on the street.  Since they have unique ID numbers they cannot be activated or usage.  A wi-fi iPad could probably fetch maybe $100.  Better stick to Tide folks!

More sirens and fun about that same time in the North River section of Valencia when deputies responded to a big fight among “juvies” at Tesoro and Copperhill reported on SCVTV’s Facebook page.  Want to place a wager on if any details of this story emerge?  I am betting no.  Much more heroic when outsiders invade and get captured, rather than dealing with potential rot in our own hood!

    Sounds like crime is increasing? There seems to be a lot going on out here lately. Perhaps it’s due to the “realignment” program, but who knows. I am still voting for the guy endorsed by Alads and lappl ! You can’t debate his public safety knowledge! VOTE JON HATAMI!’ And those two thugs are anything but gentlemen.

    Alan: Never had you pegged for a PC guy but live and learn. I just can’t recall the SD’s going to Def Con 1 when someone points a gun at someone in a liquor store in certain parts of town.

    Actually, I can tell you that you are wrong on that one. To the SD out here, a robbery is a robbery. A robbery at the Check Cashing store on Soledad (I am assuming there is one at least) will get the same attention that a robbery of Ro Ma Jewelers will get. The rank and file deputies live for the hot calls and everyone wants in on the action. Now, no two crimes are alike. Certainly a robbery that is especially heinous (i.e. victims tied up) will get more attention. Likewise, if there is good suspect info (license plate, direction of travel, etc) more eyes will be on it. In this case, there was a handgun displayed, a stolen car and the ability to track the suspects. Every deputy wants in on this action, what is better than taking down robbery suspects? And to them it does not matter who the victim is, they have a chance to take some felons off the street. They did not get into law enforcement to write speeding tickets and take crime reports. The only time you will see a bigger response is if the victim was an off-duty deputy. Because there is almost no greater crime than contempt of cop.

    Obviously he doesn’t live in my neighborhood – West Creek, or at least the blocks surrounding me, are affluent but VERY ethnically mixed. Yeah, “where white folk like to shop” is a shitty thing to say.

    You are missing the point. Tim could have just said two gentleman robbed the AT&T store. Everyone shops there: White, Black, Hispanic, etc.

    I was in the Hyatt for a father/daughter dance, and the cops were walking around the lobby asking people if they had seen “3 black guys”. The description stopped there. Classy. As we were leaving, it wasn’t hard to notice the three deputies flirting with a few of the staff at the front desk. That said, they did a good job of making sure everyone was safe, the place was crawling with officers and cop cars. I’m just glad they didn’t bust into the ballroom and start dragging anyone with darker skin off the dance floor.

    Aw, come on now. Our city is 3.2% black. Statistically speaking, they are relying on the one identifier that I assume would set them apart from most people at the Hyatt. Would it have been better if they left that out and described the color of their shirts instead? If they were chasing a white guy in Compton, I would expect them to describe him as a ‘white guy’ and nothing more. There’s no ill will on their part, they are just trying to catch the guys as quickly as possible.

    These two guys (both from the Antelope Valley) held several people hostage inside the store, including children, while they loaded stolen goods. This occured near trader joes, where 4 gang members from Los Angeles robbed a lady of her purse in the parking lot before they were caught just weeks ago. Violent crime is very real, and nothing to take lightly. We need someone in office who understands the increasing dangers of the gang element in our city. Public safety is everyone’s concern. Jon Hatami is our wisest choice.

    Must have been something in the ether yesterday. Our neighborhood was crawling with sheriff’s cars throughout the afternoon, one of which came in with lights and sirens blaring. When my husband asked an undercover officer he saw by the HOA office what was going on he was told they were attempting to serve a search warrant. Why they would give warning of that with sirens, I have no idea. We heard nothing on the police scanner about that, but did hear something about an incident up on Lake Hughes Road and someone being “DOA.”

    That’s exactly right, you have no idea. Could be the “undercover’ officer was just lying to you to get you to go away. Why would you approach an officer or deputy when they are busy working? I hate that when people do that to us. You will know what ‘s going on when you need to know.

    My husband did not “approach” the officer, he asked him a question as the officer was walking back to his car, past the HOA office, where my husband happened to be. And if it was a lie, then it was a pretty elaborate lie. The officer came over and showed my husband a picture of the fellow they were attempting to serve, who wasn’t where they expected him to be. And as to “needing to know” the LASD doesn’t have the best track record with regard to communicating to citizens what they should know.

    Santa Clarita is a great city. That jives with me. However, crime is on the rise and many outsiders choose to come here to commit their crimes. Despite how you feel about team Hatami, that’s the truth. I am more comfortable voting for someone with a grasp on public safety. That is my biggest concern this election.

    Bob Kellar had a 25 year career with the LAPD, retiring as a Sergeant. He was on the front lines of the fight and knows this better than anyone. Plus he lives in Canyon Country and gets to see the decay over there first hand on a daily basis. No disrespect to Jon, but it’s kind of hard to compare Bob to someone who works in an office building in Antelope Valley.

    BrianB, I have been to almost all the forums and Hatami really doesn’t seem to grasp what is happening in this city and is a broken record on crime. Not that its not important, just not the only important issue. How about someone with real public safety experience (as a police officer) and public office experience? Vote Bob Kellar!

    LarMcc- I agree with most of what you said about local law enforcement. The notion that law enforcement makes certain parts of town a bigger priority than others is ridiculous. I would think a robbery or anything involving a gun would get the attention of the police. As far as Bob Kellar’s public safety knowledge, of course he has experience. I just feel he is old and played out. Canyon County has turned for the worse, and I am afraid the rest of the city will as well eventually if we dont do something about it. Yes Hatami works in an office. Your point? His office is a Court room prosecuting criminals, including many gang members and even drug cartel members from Mexico. The DA’s office works hand in hand with police. I think he has a fine grasp regarding what is going on in the streets, and where the city is headed. Dont get me wrong, I am a fan of Bob Kellar too. Both of them on the council could be positive for the community.

    I had the honor of talking to Mr. Kellar in person recently. Old and played out are two words I would not use to describe him. This is a man who is very passionate about *who* he represents. He is truly a man of the people and it comes through in every word he says. Bob Kellar spoke passionately about his beliefs when it comes to government. When asked about the biggest problem facing our city, he responded that it is the failure of those in power to work together for the people. He went on to state that this is a problem that exists at the local, state and federal levels. Say what you will about Bob Kellar, but the passion in what his core beliefs are comes through when he speaks. You can sit there and says that this is some politician that is just saying what we want to hear. But, actions speak louder than words, I say. And we have seen consistently, Bob Kellar has fought to ensure that all people in this valley have a voice in local politics, something no other council member has done. While I cannot say that I agree with every decision he has made, if every politician had the same core values that Bob Kellar has, our country, state and city would be a better place. As for Jon Hatami, I think he is a nice guy. But he is untested. If there were three slots open on the council, he would be my third choice. But he seems a bit aloof when it comes to local issues. His conservative message seems a bit concocted, not that I care about being a conservative, but I do care about someone being genuine. His goons came in here and exhibited behavior more suited for mafia thugs or Frank Ferry. You gotta learn to roll with the punches in politics. As for experience, a deputy DA focuses more on the legal strategy of winning a case or negotiating a plea bargain than understanding the inner workings of street gangs. But, this is a contest of who will best serve this valley. And, Bob Kellar has proven that he is truly *our* advocate on the council, and there is no need to replace him.

    LarMcc, I respect your opinion. Do you have an opinion on the fact the Los Angeles Police Protective League endorsed Jon Hatami instead of Bob Kellar?

    Endorsements, especially ones from unions, are more about who you know along with soliciting endorsements from that organization. So, it does not impress me in the least, especially an endorsement from a police officers union in another city. Don’t get me wrong, I would want my candidate to have all the endorsements they can get. But when it comes down to my personal decision, there is so much behind the scenes politicing to get it, that it does not sway my decision or impress me.

    With this endorsement coming this late in the game, I would bet Hatami knew nobody in the organization. If that wasnt true I would think the endorsement would have come a long time ago. Perhaps they just like what he is about. I understand what you are saying about endorsements. However, I felt the significance of this was the fact that this is Bob Kellar’s former union. Although it is a union in another city, there are plenty of LAPD officers that live out here as I am sure you know. If it is about who you know, how would Bob Kellar not get their endorsement? If the geographical location of the police union is insignificant in itself, Jon Hatami was also endorsed by our local deputies’ union:ALADS.

    BrianB, Jon Hatami’s beautiful wife Roxanne is currently a deputy with LASD working out of the SCV station, so her local union’s endorsement is no surprise to me. Moreover, as for the LAPD union endorsement, Jon presumably puts away bad folks as a DA, in addition to his wife’s law enforcement career, so again no big surprise there. I agree with LarMcc. Bob Kellar is the real deal and has a proven record of accomplishment of working on behalf of his constituents. He also is the only council member from the largest and most populous community within Santa Clarita, Canyon Country. Personally, I dislike your “old” comment Brian. Experience, knowledge, common sense and integrity never get “old” in my book. Jon Hatami seems like a nice person but is woefully uninformed regarding local issues. I have a further concern in that Jon’s employer is Los Angeles County and there undoubtedly will be a conflict of interest again between City interests and what the County wants to do. Mike Antonovich is retiring in the next few years and issues with LA County could become contentious. Joanne Darcy was an employee of the County starting from before we became a City and continuing while on our council and even she walked a fine line on many issues. A conflict of interest we would do well to avoid.

    Doing some quick searching, the LAPPL seems to make endorsements in other cities only when the candidate running has some ties to law enforcement. If the LAPPL cared so much about Santa Clarita, which other candidate are they supporting for the second seat on our council? For a ‘republican,’ Hatami seems to have garnered a lot of union support, which includes ALADS and firefighters local 1014 (part of the AFL/CIO). As I said before, there are a lot of politics involved in getting endorsements. Rarely are candidates chosen who will best represent the people. Look at the fighting over the California Republican Assembly endorsement. Their decision had nothing to do with what is right and everything to do with Kellar’s support of Scott Wilk. So again I state, endorsements for any candidate really do not impress me.
