The City of Santa Clarita’s library system is celebrating its first anniversary. Was it a good year? City says yay, opponents say nay. SIGNAL
Tomorrow, the City Council is slated to fill the vacancies on city commissions. The consent calendar includes the lease for a future Canyon Country Community Center AGENDASIGNAL
Harry Bell’s fatal crash came during his biennial flight review. SIGNAL
Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom is like Freefall, just 4x bigger. KHTS was there and SCVNews has some video. This article may be the closest I come to riding. KHTSCVNEWS
As we noted on Saturday, Buck McKeon came out looking especially bad in the Issa report. KHTS has the full rundown and DOWN WITH TYRANNY rubs some salt in his wounds. Lee Rogers editorial appears in today’s paper. SIGNAL
As part of the upcoming annexations, the city will assume ownership of several county-owned parks, including David March Park, and my personal favorite, Pacific Crest Park with it’s massive play structure and sweeping views of our valley’s northern rim. SCVNEWS
Tim Myers observes the July 4th parade from the perspective of an announcer, puzzled over why Buck McKeon’s presence was downplayed in favor of the Jeep he was riding. A lot can be gleamed from the way each politician participated (or didn’t) in the parade. SIGNAL
The SCV Youth project is bringing several big-time comedians to the COC PAC for a fundraiser on August 7th, including Jay Leno and Last Comic Standing winners John Heffron and Alonzo Bodden. Bodden is (or was) an SCV resident (2007 profile, SIGNAL), so I’d expect some close-to-home material. SCV YOUTH PROJECT
I love this minute-by-minute account of just how CNN and Fox News came to erroneously report that the Supreme Court struck down the Affordable Care Act. It’s a long read, but a must-read and it’s all sourced first-hand. SCOTUSBLOG

How about a shout out to rookie right-hander Trevor Bauer (former Hart High grad) of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Won his first game going 6 innings and allowing 2 hits against the first place Dodgers. Very impressive.
Phil EllisJuly 9, 2012 at 1:05 pm
I was wondering about that lack as well. Great job by a local athlete.
RNDDUDEJuly 9, 2012 at 1:05 pm
Yes, it is a very long read, and yes, it is well worth reading.

The damaging info about Bucks loan was released way to early have a devastating impact on his re election. An October suprize would have far greater impact. On another subject. I was really dismayed to see the gov and legislature approve the train to nowhere. He can kiss his fall taxes good by.. obviously the leadership Of our state cannot manage OUR money.
Timothy Myers SR.July 9, 2012 at 1:13 pm
Will there be fireworks with 20 applications for nine vacancies for the various commissions, including Council Member Boydston’s appointee’s? Will the three incumbents up for reelection attempt to thwart the appointment of Alan Ferdman to the high profile Planning Commissioner which he can use to advantage for a possible if not probable run in 2014 to attempt to unseat at least one of them? In at least the recent past the other council members have respected the custom of a council member “appointing” their “own” people to the various commissions, but precedent only exists until it does not anymore.

I just got a hit email from McKeon decrying the cuts in military spending and how many jobs in California will be lost. I wonder how much campaign money Buck got for that. I wonder if his wife will have to take a pay cut.

I thought the government doesn’t create jobs. I’m confused.

Hmmmm…… more “last words” about Buck today from Mike. Haha…..

Found a new house for Jeff and his growing family. Luckily, it is on wheels and he can take it with him. http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2012/07/09/a-house-thats-only-1-square-meter-large/

Actually, Jeff, “a lot” CANNOT be “gleamed” from how city councilmembers ride in the parade. SO many unsubstantiated assumptions from Tim Myers, it is amazing to me considering a phone call to one of the co-chairs would have dispelled all the baseless conspiracy theories. From the standpoint of providing a vehicle that could transport all city councilmembers together, that alone is a major hurdle that is too often just not possible. Only a flatbed with sturdy sides can provide the kind of open vehicle needed to see the councilmembers, when some bring their significant others. Even without the significant others, fitting just 5 people in an open vehicle pretty much brings us back to the flatbed. Then we must procure a truck big enough to pull the flatbed, then we must find a driver that can drive the truck. Now, the flatbed and truck must be decorated. I am a committee of one that decorates VIP vehicles, although this year a wonderful angel named Cathy Martin saved my life and pitched in. I have had a flatbed thrown at me on a couple of occasions, figuratively speaking, and the amount of extra time and decorations made a nightmare out of an already difficult job. I buy the decorations, and a flatbed adds a lot. The flatbed is dropped off at our house night before, and I can decorate the night before, but considering that the chalking off of the parade entries isn’t completed until around 8:00 the night before, well, we don’t get to it til late. Day of the parade I must be finished with all cars by the time the parade starts, because I am usually driving someone. This year I drove assistant fire chief Bill Niccum in Dianne Crawford’s red Lexus (that was me in the western hat (THANK YOU DIANNE!!) and I was in first division. Thank God I didn’t have to do a flatbed! Okay, then hay bales must be procured for seating, and blankets to sit on, and this just gets to be a lot of extra work, and my husband gets one more after-parade job of dropping off the hay bales and one more after-parade job we don’t need, as on a non-flatbed parade day, we never get home beofre 4:00. Add a flatbed and hay, and clean-up of the flatbed, and the street, well, add another couple of hours at least. Now, all city councilmembers have lives OUTSIDE of city hall. Bob Kellar has always liked riding a horse. and people love that. TimBen Boydston IS Canyon Theatre and has always ridden with his wife, daughter, and a few dozen CTG actors. Laurene and Marsha usually ride together just cuz, no sinsiter plot going on here, Laurene’s hubby Jim is a parade announcer and cannot ride with her, so Laurene and Marsha have always been a twosome. Once they all went on the trolley, but it is difficult to see all the councilmembers, so that didn’t work out as planned. Now about the baseless assertion that the Buck McKeon camp “got to” the parade committee, thereby causing an e-mail to go out to announcers requesting courtesy to all parade participants. Nothing could be further from the truth! Last year, an announcer thought to be “cute” and made what was considered to be inappropriate comments about an environmental group. This has never happened before, which is why Tim Myers had never before received such an e-mail. But since it did happen, and the parade committee expects ALL participants to be treated with the utmost courtesy and respect by parade announcers, that e-mail went out this year. All it would have taken was one phone call to a parade chair to get the FACTS before submitting false assertions as fact. Next time, call Duane Harte, he will always be happy to explain any concerns. Home phone 661-255-2695, work phone 818-768-2302. Complaints go to Leon Worden. We love all suggestions, and take them all to heart so we can constantly improve the parade. SCVTalk/Here In Santa Calrita participant “Jayce” came up with many great suggestions, years ago, and every one of his suggestions helped make a better parade. Baseless assertions that misrepresent the actual truth of matters offers nothing that can be considered constructive or helpful. SCV Parade Committee member, Pauline Harte.
Capt. GeneJuly 9, 2012 at 2:40 pm
What, was Tim “disturbed” by something at the parade? So what else is new?
ScottEJuly 9, 2012 at 2:52 pm
It’s like this, Tim is an accountant. In accounting, an assumption is, by definition, unsubstantiated. Plus, it was an opinion piece so, who would take his comments about the council members not presenting a united front seriously? I have further questions, however, about the lack of flame-throwing classic cars in this year’s parade. With something like eleventy-billion firetrucks rumbling down the route, they certainly could have covered any mis-haps. What about that Timothy Myers? What about THAT?!
PetzJuly 9, 2012 at 2:57 pm
We like conspiracys, unsubstantiated claims , and rumors here at SCVTALK. They are the grease that keeps the wheels turning.
Coastal SageJuly 9, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Pauline, know that many people in the community appreciate your and your husband’s years of hard work on the parade. Does anyone ever say thanks to you for your labors? One of my young adult daughter’s happiest memories from elementary school is riding on a float in the 4th of July parade. Thanks for your and your husband’s work, especially since it contributed to my daughter’s happy childhood memories.
Pauline HarteJuly 9, 2012 at 7:41 pm
T Thank you, but trhank you’s aren’t even necessary, and many people work very very hard on the parade, and after the parade. We all have our specific jobs, and count the minutes until July 5th. Yes, it is really fun riding on a float, but even that can be a job on a hot day. One of the perks of being a driver is that I can crank up the air conditioner and stay a lot cooler than my passenger sitting on the trunk!
JayceJuly 10, 2012 at 9:25 am
Yay a Pauline sighting
Pauline HarteJuly 9, 2012 at 2:18 pm
One last thing . Buck McKeon didn’t even know he was getting that jeep. My husband, Duane Harte, gets all the VIP cars and drivers, and this year he was offered two jeeps with drivers, and Buck had no idea what kind of vehicle he was riding in until Duane called his office to find out if Buck would mind riding in a jeep. Buck didn’t mind, and that’s all there was to that. Pauline Harte.
Timothy Myers SR.July 9, 2012 at 2:35 pm
Pauline: This is even better! Whenever Congressman Buck has deigned to be in the parade his people have NEVER submitted narrative information for the announcers script (the other elected officials do). I guess we are all just supposed to bow down and pay homage as he drives by and make side bets on the over/under of how many (cumulative) procedures fantastic candidate Patricia McKeon has had. Looks like the owner of the Jeep provided the historical context and Buck’s name was added to the script for the announcers.
Bill ReynoldsJuly 9, 2012 at 2:42 pm
C’mon Timmy, you’re a professional parade announcer, right? Joke alert!
AlpinerJuly 9, 2012 at 4:01 pm
I have to give Buck credit for this one. It was great not having to hear all the political garbage that others always have said about them each parade. Just Congressman BucK McKeon. Nice for a change.
SCVResJuly 9, 2012 at 4:39 pm
Wow. Nasty.
Angelo CandelabraJuly 9, 2012 at 7:36 pm
As they drove by our section of the parade a few people yelled “CEMEX! CEMEX! CEMEX!” Congressman McKeon seemed nonplussed. This further confirmed my belief that Congressman McKeon has been so isolated from the public that he has been unaware of how strongly the community opposes the CEMEX mine and how those who are informed on this issue are upset with his disinterest and inaction on this issue.

Oh, and on a side note it looks like the $4.7 billion in Bonds for the High Speed Rail passed the State Senate on Friday.
Eric HeilbrunJuly 9, 2012 at 7:10 pm
I can’t understand how people can support this. Even if you like the “concept”, there still has to be a viable plan. It was $40 Billion, then $98 Billion, now $68 Billion…After the initial bond sale and federal money, where is the other $55 Billion coming from? From the LA Times today…”Under the authority’s management, cost and ridership estimates have fluctuated wildly. The project’s ability to lure private investors remains uncertain, the route through the eastern Central Valley has ignited a legal war with the agricultural industry and some experienced operators, such as the Central Japan Railway Co., have lost interest in the project.” Oh well, it’s a done deal and after the first leg is built, we will have no choice but to spend WHATEVER IT TAKES to finish this. If the “private investment” fails to materialize, look for higher taxes (probably on gas) and taking money from the biggest slice of our budget pie…education. There will be no choice.

Last week an appeals court struck down LA County’s ban on medical marijuana, but allowed them to be locally regulated. Anyone heard anything from the City about how they are going to respond? They banned dispensaries in the City limits a few years ago, right? Source: http://www.the-signal.com/section/287/article/69285/

TALKERS analyze the 4th of July Parade like the CIA does the May Day celebrations in Moscow, Bejing, and Pyongyang. We evaluate who is in attendance, who is standing next to whom, who came first , who did they talk with, and what kind of vehicle they drove. It is done in good fun, without nefarious intent. It was rather telling that TBB was the the only “driver” in the group. IMHO having the Armed Services Chair riding in a vintage military jeep was appropriate….if Obama keeps cutting the military he may need to bring it back into the service. My comment….the Rotary breakfast should be a place where people can gather to talk and commiserate. Having a band to entertain does not encourage communication between attendees. They are (with all due respect to the band) an impediment to meeting friends and neighbors. Petz says no band at the Rotaty breakfast.
MikeJuly 10, 2012 at 8:53 am
I love this comment.

A rare glimpse into the “Real Petz.” If you’ve never met Steve in person, this is the closest you’ll get. The rest is just “Petz Sounds.”
Timothy Myers SRJuly 10, 2012 at 9:48 am
I agree totally the band is silly! When did they add that anyway? I recall band-free breakfasts!
PetzJuly 10, 2012 at 7:29 am
Instead, Petz offers to lead the audience in a reading of the Declaration of Independence and pass a copy around for signatures at 8 AM.
