  • A 40-something man in a red Toyota pickup tried to grab a 17 year old Valencia high school girl, but she punched him in the face, broke free and ran away. The Latino male was last seen on Decoro heading toward McBean. Authorities have a composite sketch of him. KTLA, KHTS, LASD
  • More details on Soledad road crash: The man killed in yesterday’s single vehicle collision on Soledad was the 20 year old brother of the driver, who was reportedly speeding on Soledad before he lost control of the car and slammed into median divider trees. Luis Castillo, 20, was killed in the crash, while his brother Anthony Hernandez is “clinging to life in a hospital.” Signal commenters say Hernandez was speeding at 80mph prior to the early morning collision.  SIGNAL The Daily News has pics of the crumpled Acura Integra DAILY NEWS
  • City Council High Drama: I Heart describes in his characteristically detailed way how the rest of the City Council rejected (but wouldn’t explain their rejection) two of TimBen Boydston’s appointees to two committees.   • Also at the City Council meeting last night, the Council approved a lease for a 3,900 sq. ft. Canyon Country Community Center. The cost to lease the site is $103,800 and city officials are determining what to do with the facility SIGNAL
  • Odd: Patricia McKeon has loaned her failed campaign for Assembly $21,400. What could that be about? ELECTION TRACK
  • Go get ‘em: Acosta family sues the Canadian security firm that was responsible for screening Afghan contractors. Recall that Rudy Acosta was killed by one such contractor who turned out to be a rogue shooter who killed four soldiers that day. ARMY TIMES

  • Prelims begin for the three suspects in the 2011 Halloween shooting death of Alejandro Sanchez, the Good Samaritan who attempted to stop a robbery-in-progress and was shot dead by teens in front of his 7 year old son SIGNAL
  • Word was that the mercury topped 107 yesterday in Saugus, and there’s no relief until at least Friday according to the National Weather Service. I feel like my annual “bitch about the weather” post is long overdue NWS WARNING Also, the LA Times says Red Flag conditions are at their highest this year LA TIMES
  • LA County Parks and Rec department attempting to balance concerns among mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians. There will be a meeting tomorrow if you’re interested. SCVNEWS 
  • A Stevenson Ranch couple has been arrested for having sex in community pool. They’re just a pair of 20 something kids, but “the two were having sex and were observed by a neighbor” according to police. Cops arrested the couple on the complaint alone (!!!!) and have shamed them further by naming them publicly SIGNAL
  • Wendy Langhans, SCV’s resident naturalist, writes about how bugs and insects seek out fires KHTS
  • Gary Horton, liberal Signal columnist, often writes about how charming and well-mannered Buck McKeon is. He wrote about it last month, and on Monday, had another meeting with the Congressman in which he was charmed. He says after his meeting, Buck McKeon met with the general manager of the Signal. Oh to be a fly on the wall in that meeting SIGNAL
  • Myers gets spanked by City father Carl Boyer, who says Sen. Fran Pavley, a Democrat, played a crucial outside role in helping form the City of Santa Clarita. LTE
  • If you’re a conservative, you’ll probably like John Boston’s satirical news story about President Obama and climate change. If you’re a liberal, well let’s just say he finds a way to say something offensive about most things you believe in WRB

    One can’t argue with Carl Boyer’s knowledge of City formation history and I stand appropriately spanked. HOWEVER, that was 25 years ago and in my defense people more knowledgeable about the State Senator’s comings and goings during her last term confirm that she almost NEVER left the heart of her incredibly gerrymandered District, which is pretty much an argument for commission redistricting in and of itself, not even deigning to come to events in the San Fernando Valley even though her district included a fairly good chunk of Woodland Hills. (Her old district, by the way, including ALL of Agoura Hills (her power base), most of Malibu and then ran narrowly up the coast, miraculously bypassing more Republican strongholds of TO and Camarillo, even cutting off the Northern part of Oxnard where one MIGHT find a Republican.)

    Allan certainly knows his history but a lot of that is coming up on 30 years ago and we have to live in the present, and I think it can probably be documented that Fran Pavley has not set foot in Newhall for probably 20 years.

I woke up this morning remembering my 5 friends who gave the ultimate sacrifice on this day 45 years ago in a Mekong Delta rice paddy: Sgt George Smith, Marion Eakins, Harold King, Fred Kenney, and Phil Ferro. Fred Kenney, Canoga Park HS ’64 never saw his baby boy. Phil Ferro, fellow classmate – Cleveland HS ’64 & All LA High Hurdles Champion never knew what hit him this fateful day 45 years ago………

    As a member of the SCV Trail Users (a mostly mountain bike advocacy group) I can tell you that, at least on paper, the solution to the Canyon Trail problem is satisfactory. Man-made features that slow cyclists down on a trail are increasingly common as more users take to the trails for fun and fitness. The SCV Trail Users will continue to be an advocate for more trails for all user groups and for overall trail safety. I personally look forward to continuing to work with the county on this important topic. If you are interested in some good old fashioned policy debate, come out to Hart Hall tomorrow at 6:00 PM.

    On getting freaky in the pool… a.) if the cops came to arrest everyone who got it on in my pool in college, there would be a substation poolside open from 10p-4a every night. I don’t think there was a night I would look out the window that there wasn’t a couple being, um, how you say, amorous? But more importantly, b.) element of some racism going on here? Preliminary investigation by yours truly reveals this couple to be representing two, if not three races. The girl is a white girl who goes to Cal Poly SLO and her boyfriend, appears to be of mixed race in the photos on her facebook… and he appears to be the son of a television director who is African American. Could it be that the Stanch/Stench folks don’t tolerate such conditions well and screamed foul so loudly that the SD arrested “on the strength of the complaint alone” because of that intensity? Standing by with even more gas to pour on the fire….

    How do you know what pool it was to assert that children go to the pool? The article said deputies refused to identify the pool. Were you the complainant? If so, did you personally witness that there children there at the time? I’m not defending them… but the indecent exposure charge will never stick. If they’re not members of the association, they’ve got a trespass charge, at best.

    Todd, indecent exposure is indecent exposure regardless of the color of the body parts exposed. We as a civilized society have laws to protect decent folks from irresponsible exhibitionist like these and racism has no part in the discussion. The article clearly stated that it is a community pool and therefore open to children, seniors, etc. I would have called the authorities too, but only after I first interrupted their shameless activities and hopefully ruined “the moment”, since they did not care who they were offending anyway.

    There is a lot of protean morality in the burbs, particularly middle aged ladies who seem to forget what they got up to in the 70′s and 80′s. At least the couple are attractive people so a witness can’t complain they have some horrifying image that visits them in their nightmares.

    Do you get all your excercise by jumping to conclusions? You know nothing more than any one else here but you inject an element of racism because you would condone this in your pool. It’s a public place, open to the folks who live there. Maybe you would like to walk out to the public pool and into the midst of an orgy with your kids, most people don’t want that.

    Obviously its not a “public” place because they were arrested for illegally entering and occupying a dwelling. Further, only being open to residents means I, nor you (assuming), nor any common man, woman or child may enter. Sounds like its a private place to me.

    Our HOA installed cameras pointed toward the jacuzzi so they will have evidence when this kind of situation arises. Our security guys have taken pool keys away from people engaging in illegal or inappropriate behavior, but I don’t think any formal arrests have been made. Publishing the names of the accused seems overkill in this case.

    So people can be arrested on accusation alone? When did this place turn into communist Russia? In a day in age where nearly everyone has video cameras on hand all the time they better have some sorta video evidence because they start throwing free citizens in jail.

    Nate, I believe it is called an arrest based on an eyewitness to a crime being committed/in progress. Video proof is not required.

    You could watch the video as much as you want and still your spanish translation were wrong and you saw a middle finger as a gang sign which shows that a person see what they want to see. Nosy neighbors in Santa Clarita always believe the worst about their fellow neighbors. Being able to make accusations of anyone having them arrested is not right. If these people were smart they would keep their mouth shut and say it didn’t happen so prove it. Which is no consolation if these accusations aren’t true and they are having their names run through the dirt.

    FYI – Another high end bike theft in Stevenson Ranch yesterday. Our neighbors left their garage door open for literally 15 minutes, with both cars parked inside and the husband inside the home. The wife was at our house for just a few minutes, walked back outside and witnessed a man riding away with the bike. We think someone driving a late model 4 door silver mercedes helped him get away. We all jumped in our cars to pursue, but they were gone. The sheriff was nearby and we had police all over, but they did not find them. A bike theft ring was broken up a few months ago, but they think a new group has taken over. Watch out!

    Had a similar incident here in Saugus a few years back: Hubby left the garage door open while he came inside for about 15- 20 min.s and his new dirt bike was stolen. My whole family~ including the dog~ were home at the time.
