June 14, 2013 – Daily Brief

  • A standing-room only crowd filled the SUSD Board room last night as hundreds of residents and four other Board members asked, cajoled, and pleaded with Stephen Winkler to resign his position from the Saugus Union School District Board of Trustees. Our own Mike Devlin was there and confronted Winkler with the court documents that seem to show he lives in Sylmar, not Santa Clarita. Although Winkler confirmed he had signed those documents, he refused to resign ; indeed, he seemed to enjoy the controversy, saying "We're going to have fun tonight." He continued to deny the YouTube content was his, and also says he thinks his Twitter has been hacked as well. In the end, all the Board could do was censure and admonish him publicly (4-1 with Winkler dissenting). Good reports from Luke Money at THE SIGNAL, Perry Smith at KHTS, and full video of the meeting at SCVTV
  • Winkler told ABC 7 that he thinks there's a silent majority of SCVers out there who support him. In more ways than one, as we'll detail here, the man thinks he's Nixon. ABC 7
  • The Board will have its regularly scheduled meeting next Tuesday and the thinking is that if it turns out he's been living outside the SUSD, his office could simply be declared vacant and a new election or appointment could be made. Keep an eye on SCVTalk for any changes to the agenda that get posted today. "Hell hath no fury like a Santa Claritan scorned," said one woman last night.
  • When Public/Private Partnerships fail: Rick Patterson of the SCV Facilities Foundation -the private group that was founded by the Hart District to find, develop, and fund property for new school construction-  says the Foundation "should remain to be available for future opportunities and future projects that would benefit the [Hart] district." In other words, he wants to keep his job, whereas the Hart District would like to liquidate the FF and transfer its assets back to the District. SIGNAL
  • Last Sanitation District outreach meeting only draws 15 or so Santa Claritans. SIGNAL
  • Authorities have identified the man who was found dead behind a business at Plum & Bouquet Canyon road as 61 year old Victor Beres of Saugus. Suicide is suspected, "but not cause or manner of death has been determined by the coroner" yet, reports the SIGNAL
  • Two month old "very cute" tabby cat rescued from unlocked car near school by Deputies. SIGNAL
  • The old Santa Clarita Athletic Center, at one time the SCV's only real gym, closed earlier this year and the property it owned on Wiley & Calgrove went into foreclosure. CoStar reports that an investment group has purchased the old space for $4 million. COSTAR
  • Nearly 200 people will be laid off from their jobs in the LA County Superior Court system. KHTS
  • Meet your new HOA, the City of Santa Clarita, writes Christine Korenthal in a piece for the Signal, critical of the City's new ordinance package that was passed last month. SIGNAL
  • Let's give the Saugus School bell a try: The TIME RANGER says the Saugus school bell -currently hanging in the Newhall Metrolink tower- has some interesting -perhaps magical- properties. I wonder if it could help rid of us Winkler if we ring or something? TIME RANGER

Great sleuthing on WinklerGate gang. As an accountant who does a fair amount of litigation support and forensic work, I'm fascinated by the process. Would love to read a play-by-play/timeline on how it all went down, #ThePlayers etc. when the dust settles and the time is right. Thanks for being "Ever Vigilant." ;)

"Winkler told ABC 7 that he thinks there's a silent majority of SCVers out there who support him." Wow, has Ender math returned?

Those "guest readers" I've heard of, no doubt.

If the board actually removes him on this coming Tuesday let us not forget the true hero of this entire sad episode; the one, the only: Tankdog!!!

For a vacant building, there sure were a lot of people at the gym at Wiley and Calgrove last week

Other than the alleged stupid comments and his questionable residence, what actions pertaining to his post has Winkler actually done that is so harmful? Just curious...

That's like saying, "What did Hilter do that was so wrong?" In Hilter's own sick mind, HE thought he was doing the right thing. There is something very seriously wrong with Mr. Winkler. If you watch the video, his behavior with getting off topic with historical figures is unbelievable when he can't answer a simple "yes" or "no" question. Even more sickening, is that in the beginning he states, "This will be fun." Having such a sick person around our children is endangering our children. This is a very serious subject matter, not fun. Even IF someone had hijacked his account, it's NOT something to smile about or "fun" to talk about. HE is loving every minute of this, it's why he didn't resign. God help us if he owns a gun.

Everything else aside, he has gone into classrooms and berated teachers. He has subsequently been banned from campuses. Nonetheless, in my own personal opinion, that in itself is cause for his removal, if not also his arrest for disturbing the peace and possibly assault and/or terrorist threats.

$10 says santaclaritadotcom readers are googling Bill Reynolds now LOL ;)

Hey, Bill is a stand-up guy, I don't care what his YouTube posts say! :)
  14. MikeSaturday, June 15th, 2013 at 2:33 pm
Oh Julie, Julie, Julie. Bill Reynolds and YouTube is a story for the ages. Worlds collide: Winkler favorites include at least one Bill Reynolds vid.

Leon, thank you for very much for your kind words... and thank you for your perspective on Winkler. Your opinions are of substance and value...

By the way, I have one YouTube posted that has garnered over 61,000 views and numerous positive comments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA7-9yXJ6Rg

Hi Bill! Funny thing is, when I said that, I wasn't even thinking about your *actual* YouTube videos! LOL. And I stand by what I said.

Happy Father's Day, Leon! :-) These left wingers are just so predictable - I knew that when I posed an "innocent" query about Winkler they'd go ballistic. Thanks guys - ha-ha-ha!

Bill, Do you believe that only left-wingers are upset about Winkler? Just asking.
  20. Bill ReynoldsMonday, June 17th, 2013 at 7:46 am
Upset.... hmmmm.... honestly, I wonder who would have voted for him in the first place & I wondered that long before this stuff was known.
  21. evitalc31Monday, June 17th, 2013 at 8:22 am
I am a voter who likes to research candidates. I am relatively new to this area so I didn't get to vote for anyone in SCV. I most certainly would not have voted for Winkler after looking into him. Low voter turnout doesn't help, does it? I try to be collectivist in my views when I vote. Voting for school board members isn't just about one person, it is about the children.
  22. Bill ReynoldsMonday, June 17th, 2013 at 10:48 am
Yes, it's always about the children... especially ones that make it out of the womb alive, huh.
  23. evitalc31Monday, June 17th, 2013 at 5:25 pm
It really bothers me when older voters don't think about those younger than them. Maybe I am off but I always think of how my vote will affect the generations behind me.
