- Did you get the scary amber alert message last night? Millions of us did. In perhaps what is an astonishing feat of engineering & technology (simultaneous push to all carriers, smart phone brands, operating systems in geographic area) and a somewhat creepy if not frightening tactic, CHP authorities published an Amber Alert to millions from Diego to the Bay, after a San Diego man allegedly killed a woman and kidnapped one or both of her children. My British friend thought it was a tsunami or earthquake warning; others thought it a sign that a meteor was about to hit, and most iOS users struggled to remember that their phones have drawers you can pull down to retrieve messages. - Homicide detectives are looking into the death of the 8 year old Castaic boy, who died after drowning in his washing machine. But there's no indication of foul play; it's routine in cases like these. Jim Holt called a trade group and asked if drowning in your own washing machine is a common occurrence and well, it's not. - Scary: Woman in SUV plunges off 50 foot embankment on Via Princessa near Whites Canyon. She suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital in a neck brace. Firefighters had to rappel down to rescue her. SIGNAL
- SCVers mighty upset that Time Warner and CBS can't reach a deal, or at least they will be come football season. I could care less about TV; I'm upset that my TWC 15mb/s internet connection is practically useless in the evening. I swore I'd never go back to AT&T but I might have to, or use one of these awesome little devices to merge & combine the bandwidth of my TWC & Verizon 4G LTE (my contract still has unlimited data; never giving that up). - In a great report last week, the BBC credited Congressman Buck McKeon with almost single-handedly creating a worldwide military and civilian drone industrial complex. "McKeon is a case study in how a member of Congress can work within the system, operate within ethical boundaries created by Congress, and have an impact on policy - as well as increase profits for Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, all of which make drones in his district," the BEEB says.
- Joe Messina says no one should expect to make a living working at a McDonald's, that everyone knows such jobs are simply starter jobs for the young and thus it's ridiculous to expect McDonald's or any other fast food company to pay a "living wage." That may be true in say Grand Junction Colorado, where (like every time I visit somewhere in the midwest) I'm always shocked that the fast food employees are young white teenagers, but in the big cities the demographics of such workers are completely different. Remember the choices have been narrowed down to two: a cowboy and film reel representing the rootin' tootin' roots of the SCV, and a hut-like structure honoring the OG SCVers, the Tataviam people.
