- SCV public schools, the real driver of our local economy, perform significantly above average in statewide STAR test results announced yesterday. The NSD, whose 5,000+ elementary students vary widely in demographics and economic status, out-performed all other elementary districts in the SCV. - Speaking of economic engines, some positive spin on rather dismal office vacancy numbers in a report today by Jana Adkins at the Signal. Some 20% of office space in the SCV sits vacant, a 3% rise from this time last year, but that is due in part to the completion of a 100k sq. ft. office space on Soledad Canyon. Most new office tenants are small businesses, leasing less than 5k sq. ft. and we have the third highest vacancy rate in the region. Major changes won't occur unless/until major employers move to the SCV. SIGNAL
- Former teacher and vice principal in the Sulphur Springs district jumps into the race for NSD's board at the last minute. One challenger vs three incumbents in an at-large election. SIGNAL
- Cole Hartman is the name of the 8 year old autistic boy who drowned in his family's washing machine last week. Friends of the family are raising money for the Hartman family at events in the SCV next week. Holt at the SIGNAL
- Bradford Pate, the man who allegedly drove his pickup south on the northbound 14 and caused a collision that killed two, pleads not guilty to two counts of murder. The 38 year old Burbank man been released from the hospital and is on crutches at men's central jail. He faces life in prison. SIGNAL
- The hothead youth football coach who slugged a teenaged referee during a 12 year old football game will spend 10 days in jail and go through 52 weeks of anger management therapy after pleading no contest to charges. Hope it was worth it man. SIGNAL
- Buck McKeon shares his thoughts on Ed Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked documents proving the US spies on internet communications. McKeon says he doesn't know what he would do, but he knows that 'Merica is acting like a child on this, and that Snowden really damaged the United States by leaking those slides. He also doesn't know what he'd tell Obama to do, but he expects Obama to just fix it, cause that's what leaders do. DEFENSE NEWS
- "Personally, as a voter I’d rather have five elected officials with whom I can ask questions and submit concerns. At least I’d have a fighting chance that one of them would listen," writes Tammy Messina in an interesting piece today in the Signal, arguing against district-based voting. I wonder if that holds true on a state and federal level for Tammy. Why not have an at-large Congress where we vote for all 54 Congressional seats? She also says that there are some small pockets of town where Latinos live, but most of them are disbursed. Yeah that's true except for the fact that when you consider those "small pockets" are about 2 or 3x more dense than the rest of the City. SIGNAL
- I remember this map: Coaster guy shows a Magic Mountain map from 1988, when it featured Looney Tunes characters and you could get a second day "twicket" pass for only $1. Of course back then we actually had dolphins performing at Magic Mountain's Aqua Park. I wonder what ever happened to them? COASTER GUY
