- Update: A burned body has been found near Castaic Lake, SCVTV reports. KTLA says a fire was spotted this morning off Lake Hughes Road after someone called and reported a small brush fire. Once firefighters arrived, they made the "grim discovery" that it was a human body on fire. A tent has been erected to cover the remains. - The Signal continues its series on disasters in the SCV, with today's piece chock-full of good advice on how to prepare for the inevitable SCV apocalypse that awaits us all. The article makes me want to dust off my ham radio license and put a 2meter transceiver in the homes of everyone I care about, because nothing worked for days after the Northridge quake in 1994. - Cary Quashen has some epic advice: close your eyes when disaster strikes. “You don’t want those images implanted in the brain — they stay there.” I'll never forget the ramshackle neighborhood posse that formed in Sunset Pointe post-quake in which residents built a Walking Dead-style barricade and patrolled it with rifles because they were afraid of looters visiting the SCV from South LA. Never mind that the freeway was collapsed. #TeenageTrauma
- Also regarding the above: I have a suggestion for the Signal. Look into state laws regarding emergency situations & price gouging/profiteering and talk to some economists about whether such laws are effective or even good. I distinctly remember buying 1 gallon jugs of Arrowhead water for $10 a gallon from a gas station after the Northridge quake; batteries and other supplies saw big increases too at the Creekside Target. I think that's illegal in CA but I'm not sure it makes sense since it's normal for prices to go up when there's a supply or demand shock, such as there is after a disaster. Also if it's not illegal, I plan to buy tons of batteries and make a killing during the next SCV disaster.
- Weekend road carnage continued: I missed reports of a collision on Highway 14 on Saturday in the SCV and sadly, today the Signal follows up with a report that one 64 year old man died after suffering injuries in the multi-vehicle crash near Newhall Avenue. SIGNAL
- Here's a new one: A semi truck carrying gasoline caught fire yesterday near Vista Del Lago Road on I-5 north of Castaic. Thankfully the tanker didn't explode and start a new wildfire or melt the I-5 or anything that dramatic. In fact this is so run of the mill as far as freeway disasters in the SCV go it's probably not even worthy of a link. SIGNAL
- UPDATE: See first entry in the Daily Brief above: No sign of Bryce Laspisa: Despite sending specially-trained dive deputies, an S&R helicopter and scent dogs, deputies were no closer to finding Brycle Laspisa yesterday. A Deputy says one dog picked up the 19 year old student's scent near the water, but deputies searching the lake under water did not find him. SIGNAL. The LASD has put up a bulletin with more details & a timeline of his disappearance and KHTS has some pictures of the scent dogs via SCVNEWS, while KNBC 4 talked to Bryce's girlfriend.
- The 27 year old resident of Tick Canyon who was arrested last year for running his own animal butcher shop was arrested again yesterday after Animal Care and Control officers, acting on a tip, discovered more butchered meats at the man's property. Roberto Celedon, nicknamed the "Backyard Butcher," by local media, was arrested last year and he was forbidden from owning animals. SMITH@KHTS via SCVNEWS, HOLT@ SIGNAL
- McKeon works it: Interviewed by CNN yesterday morning, Congressman Buck McKeon says it's about time Obama consulted Congress on the Syria situation and that if Obama had thought it through better, he wouldn't have put "US prestige on the line" by declaring chemical weapons a "red line" that shan't be crossed by strongman Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. And in a rather clever move, he turned the whole debate about bombing Syria into a discussion about the Defense sequester, saying our troops have been shortchanged by the president for so long and that they need our care just like the Syrian civilians who died of sarin gas attacks need our care. In other words, give me more money to buy drones, re-fit unwanted & obsolete tanks and buy second engines for the F-35, and you can have your war Mr. President. POLITICO, THE HILL
