Far Right Lane to the Wrong Offramp

Call it a spidey sense, but something seemed really off about this article from The Signal on Friday.
"Opponents of the recent influx of migrant children across the nation’s southern border have scheduled a two-day national protest, and the Santa Clarita Valley will be one of the sites where they plan to demonstrate...On Saturday organizers plan a demonstration in Valencia on the Valencia Boulevard overpass over Interstate 5. The demonstration is expected to run from 9 a.m. to noon."
The byline said "Signal Staff" which in the past has meant anything from senior editors, to interns, simply press releases copied verbatim. No word on who was organizing the event. No names, no quotes. This newsroom discussion video from Friday offered little more.
For a town where protests are rare, I was surprised to learn a protest involving a polarized issue (just as it's peaking in the news cycle) on one of our busiest overpasses was just a day away. It was news to me, and it appeared that it was news to everyone else, too.
The only mention I could find was this post on the Save Our State (SoS) message board. SoS, as you might recall, is the radical anti-illegal immigration group with white nationalist roots that organized the two rallies in 2010 made infamous by Bob Kellar's "proud racist" remark. Here's their founder, Joe Turner, in 2005
"I can make the argument that just because one believes in white separatism that that does not make them a racist... I can make the argument that someone who proclaims to be a white nationalist isn't necessarily a white supremacist. I don't think that standing up for your 'kind' or 'your race' makes you a bad person."
SoS isn't a large organization, so their members from different areas will converge on a single city for a show of force (if you watch videos of their rallies, you see the same faces over and over again).
Image not recoveredscv_SCVRWF_Collage.jpg
Thanks to the Signal's article, some locals took notice. The SCV Republican Women Federated, whose Facebook page already "likes" another hate group with white nationalist ties (Federation for American Immigration Reform), promoted the event on Facebook. They followed that up by linking to a video that made the case against legal (yes, legal) immigration and opened by calling 1925 to 1965 our "golden era" of immigration – which happens to be the exact period between the Immigration Act of 1924 and its full repeal in 1965. The infamous 1924 law is one of the most racist and anti-Semitic federal laws of the 20th century. Driven by bigotry towards Jews, Italians, and Asians (among others) it drastically cut immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe, establishing quotas based on the existing ethnic makeup of the US, and banned Asian immigration outright (no, I'm not making this up).
And keep in mind, this isn't some group on the outskirts. On Saturday morning, they were hosting no less than Steve Knight, Tony Strickland, and Scott Wilk for breakfast.
A few people had the good sense to organize a counter-protest, giving us the final ingredient for a mini-spectacle. I drove over to see what all the fuss was about. Here's a look at the counter-protesters:
Image not recoveredscv_Collage_Fotor.jpg
Each camp took their place on opposite sides of the overpass. I counted 21 protesters (and five mullets) and 16 counter-protesters. I was heartened to see such a strong last-minute turnout for the counter-protest, especially when the gun flag was hoisted.
Image not recoveredscv_take-it.jpg
Soon after I arrived, a the protesters unveiled their pièce de résistance: a large white flag with a picture of an AR-15 that said COME AND TAKE IT. Because naturally, in a protest about the fate of thousands of refugee children, the important thing is your guns. What do guns have to do with it? (Or should I even ask?) It was at once chilling, heartbreaking, puzzling, and laughable. Flying that flag front and center, higher that any other flag, made a self-mockery of their demonstration. It's easy to laugh, but then you realize that they actually mean it.. The gun flag flies proudly, while the American flag drags on the ground, literally (this guy did this twice, once while walking in traffic to taunt the counter-protesters).
Image not recoveredscv_dragging.jpg
There was also a "Three Percenter," or "Oathkeeper" flag, which represents a militia-type movement  that encourages preparation for a violent confrontation with the government, should they ever come for their guns (and other crazy things).
Image not recoveredscv_flags.jpg
I'm quick to acknowledge that reasonable people can arrive at some very different conclusions on this issue, especially with the added complication of the current refugee crisis. If the motivation and the message of the protest was narrow and reasoned, it wouldn't bother me so much. Instead, we see the marriage of rabid jingoism and defiant milita-like behavior. What could possibly go wrong?
I only recognized one or two people from across the street, and by the way most of the protesters carried themselves, you get the idea that they came to town for this purpose (aliens, if you will). Thank you to the counter-protesters who demonstrated that this is still a decent community of decent people. Well done. And thanks for the laugh. I love a semi-ironic protest sign like nothing else.

I can smell racists from far away. Bullying minority children is a sure indicator. I just wish we had more than 20 hours to organize our counter protest. Not in my town!!!
  2. DConstanceSunday, July 20th, 2014 at 7:22 pm
Thanks for doing the additional research, Mike. When I learned about the protest and counter-protest on Friday night, I looked at the Southern Poverty Law Center listing of hate groups. Save Our State was identified as a hate group in 2005, but I didn't see the group on the most recent lists. I stood with the counter-protest group for about an hour before I had to leave, as did others. At one point, our group outnumbered the protesters. It's hard to say if the response from drivers passing by was equal, but I'm glad that Malcolm and David organized our group. This kind of activity shouldn't go unchallenged.

We don't need no stinking laws and we don't need no stinking border, says liberal lawyer David.
  4. blutoMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 11:34 am
So now it's official...if you are against this rampant illegal immigration, if you support enforcing our immigration laws, you are a racist.
  5. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 12:19 pm
Wow, talk about misinformation, Mike this is beneath you! First off, this last minute rally was put forward by two LOCAL residents I personally know not SOS or any other group. I received an email notice from a group called Numbers USA who was simply keeping track of planned protests. Second, each individual represented him/herself since there was no “group”, so being there did not necessarily mean one agrees with the others anymore than Jews on the other side agree with the messages about Jesus. Third, there were more than 40 folks protesting illegal immigration and the lack of enforcement of our borders and much fewer, I think I counted 11 at their peak, on the "other side". Contrary to comments here, they never “outnumbered” the protestors and were down to about three folks after the first two hours. Fourth, many of these folks entering the country illegally are not "unaccompanied children" and this is a fact. Fifth, even the ones that are children are not refugees, crime and murder has DECREASED in their home countries. They are illegal aliens responding to what they believe to be an offer of amnesty, prompted by Obama's illegal DACA order, once they enter the country unimpeded which is why they are turning themselves into our border patrol officers. Sixth, I spoke to nearly all of the protesters some of whom I knew, others not. Only one person was not a Santa Clarita resident, she was from Simi where she said there were no protests, and she felt so strongly she drove here. Seventh, folks on "our side" were not name-calling, the other side was (see racist sign etc), and a few folks driving by were flipping us off, those agreeing with us honked but ignored the other side, no nastiness. Eight, the man who wound up dragging the flag was responding to an idiot hurling insults at us, the genius on THEIR SIDE who came from Murrieta, is not a local resident, and the nicer thing he yelled was that we wanted to hurt little children but said much worse. I was present from about 9:30 to 2:00pm Like I said Mike, beneath you…
  6. MikeMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 1:56 pm
Berta, I couldn't speak to the peak of either group, but it's impossible that you counted 11 at the peak of the protest. I made a point to count, and I'm certain I counted correctly when I did. I just went through my photos and I have a partial crowd shot of the counter protesters that accounts for at least 14 people, and a series of crowd shots of the main demonstration that show 21 at one time and 24 another time. When did you count more than 40? I spoke with two people, both who were there for a short time, and both prior to 9:30, and at that time, the protesters were outnumbered. I was there from about 10:50 to 11:50, FWIW. (and I hope you aw that I waved back). Also, there's a least one person from Fillmore who was there, so I'm not sure that you had a full census of the protesters. And trust me, even for the time I was there, they got several of hostile yells and obscene gestures. Who was the local organizer? Did you meet anyone named Greg? Who brought all the yellow signs that you see at every SoS rally? In all honesty, I was only expecting to be there for a few minutes and I didn't even know which side I was approaching until well after the crosswalk. If I wasn't due to bring lunch home for the family, I would have crossed the street, if only to say hi to you. I know you're doing what you think it right, but are you the least bit concerned about standing beside someone flying the flag with a rifle at a single-subject protest like this?
  7. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 2:34 pm
Mike, at our peak attendance, when more folks arrived at I think it was around 12:30 “we” numbered about 40 and “they” numbered 11, which quickly dropped to 3. The person holding the flag depicting a gun was exercising her free speech right, for a while there was also a guy with an Israeli flag with us too, and full disclosure I support Israel’s right to exist and defend herself and am a supporter of the 2nd amendment myself although I was not “with” either of these protestors. Bearing arms is still a constitutionally protected legal activity, illegally crossing our border and entering the country is not! Yes, I did meet Greg, a Saugus resident, and he and another local resident, John whom I have known for a couple of years, organized the protest rally and as far as I know neither is an SOS member. They are like me, citizens who have had enough of this lawlessness. I did not speak to anyone from Fillmore and Stop illegal Immigration signs are not exclusive to SOS groups or any other organized groups. Had you taken the trouble to talk to any of us you would have had accurate information. I cannot speak to any numbers on either side prior to my arrival at about 9:20am. As I said Mike, such misinformation is beneath your reporting ability.
  8. MikeMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 3:11 pm
Appears that "Greg" is the SoS organizer "Greg in LA" http://www.saveourstate.info/showthread.ph Curious to note that his count of the counter-protesters matched mine ;) What does any of this have to do with anyone's constitutional right to say anything? That's a given. I was asking for your honest feeling about weapons being made part of this specific cause.
  9. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 3:59 pm
Mike I stand by my counts and continuing to argue with you when you were only there for a brief time is pointless. As to Greg, I do not know what time he counted and as I said, as far as I know he is not with SOS but even if he is, I participated in a peaceful demonstration against illegal immigration. In my presence, the protestors on our side made no derogatory racial or ethnic comments nor would they have been tolerated since several of "us" are Americans of Hispanic ancestry. In fact, a few years back one of the SOS leaders, also Hispanic, made a derogatory remark to a Black woman in Council Chambers and I took him to task for it and spoke to the woman and apologized to her for the ignorant remarks the guy made and assured her they do not represent my views. I later met her and although she is a partisan Democrat with whom I disagree on nearly every issue, and she has personally disrespected me, I would still have taken the jerk to task. Point is that because someone attends a rally with folks with other viewpoints we may not agree with that does not diminish the actual purpose of this rally, to protest rampant illegal immigration. I do not agree with a bunch of stuff said at many meetings I attend including Council meetings, but I still attend and express my views. As I already stated I support the second amendment. I don’t know that this protestor was making a point of guns relating to illegal immigration anymore than the guy with the Israeli flag was, but I can tell you that there is a growing sentiment that if the Feds will not secure our borders, armed civilians will and then all hell will break loose. I am glad Governor Perry is sending the National Guard to the Texas border before there is armed insurrection. Bottom line is folks are getting tired of illegal aliens entering the country unimpeded and taking jobs, receiving benefits, committing crimes etc while our government encourages them, and cartel members fire at will upon our Border Patrol and Rangers and the Federal Government does nothing to secure our borders. You feel differently and that is your right but I also have the right to correct your one sided report of the protest rally.
  10. Bill ReynoldsMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 4:04 pm
    Well said Berta! Bravo!
  11. MikeMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 8:35 pm
So just who do your friends intend to shoot with their guns? The children, or just the cops?
  12. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 10:44 pm
Mike I do not speak for my friends armed or unarmed. If the current situation were to continue unabated and there is a call to arms by civilians to protect our border many will answer it. Armed civilians will not be stationed at authorized border check points where folks can legally cross our border, nor would our purpose be to engage lawful USA Border Patrol or other authorities in gunfire unless in self defense so, my preference would be to follow the example of México along its southern border with Guatemala (when México is NOT facilitating illegals PASSING through their country to enter the USA illegally). The procedure along México’s southern border is for armed guards patrolling ANYWHERE along their border to order ALL persons “Alto o te disparo”, Halt or I will shoot you. Mexican military/border patrol shoot to kill first shot. ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot, the first round aimed to wound and if that does not stop them, the second round aimed to kill with no regrets unless they are also armed in which case first shot is kill shot. I suspect other armed civilians would follow similar protocol, which is why I am glad Governor Perry is calling up the National Guard to secure Texas border and prevent potential clashes between law enforcement and armed USA civilians. However, Jerry Brown has guaranteed that illegal entry may shift to unprotected areas of California since he has proclaimed he will not call up California National Guard so there still may be difficult choices ahead for armed civilians in California. If our government will not stop folks from overrunning our borders, they are inciting insurrection and will be responsible for whatever transpires and God help us all.
  13. MikeMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 10:49 pm
OK, so you're in favor of murdering people for crossing the border. No wonder you felt so at home across the bridge.
  14. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 11:18 pm
I speak only for myself. I am in favor of our government performing its duty to protect and defend the United States of America and when our government fails to fulfill this most important obligation, as is currently the case, others and I are prepared to do what it takes to protect our country. Once word gets out that the welcome wagon is closed, the coyotes, cartels, and all other unauthorized persons will get the message, and the needless tragedies on both sides of the border will stop. Your scorn should be directed at your government for failing to secure our sovereign borders, not towards those of us who demand a return to the rule of law.
  15. scvmjbMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 11:49 pm
Berta wrote: "I am in favor of our government performing its duty to protect and defend the United States of America and when our government fails to fulfill this most important obligation, as is currently the case, others and I are prepared to do what it takes to protect our country." Wow! Protect us from those terrified migrant children. You're as "American" as the Ku Klux Klan.
  16. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 10:29 am
So according to you it is "racist" to want a return to the rule of law and our borders secure and those willing to accomplish what our federal government refuses to do and protect our borders are "Klu Klux Klan", no wonder nothing gets accomplished...

  18. Lori RivasMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 11:06 pm
That is despicable, and shame on you, Berta, for advocating a shoot to maim, then kill, anyone crossing our border without papers. My dear God, all I can imagine are the babies and the desperate innocents.
  19. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 10:22 am
What is despicable Lori is that folks keep paying coyotes thousands of dollars to bring folks to the USA knowingly violating our laws and putting these folks, even children, through terrible things along the way. Many of these folks are not "babies and desperate innocents" nor are they unaccompanied. You are willing to continue to encourage this lawless behavior I am willing to do what needs to be done to put a stop to it but prefer my government perform its duty so I do not have secure our border.
  20. Lori RivasTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 11:27 am
Shooting to maim or kill is an act of aggression. Crossing the border in search of a job, safety, or even hope, is not aggression. To meet desperation with a threat of physical attack is despicable, and a total lack of humanity. God help us all, if this is the path our country takes.
  21. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 12:27 pm
Lori we will never agree on this or most issues, I get that, but drug cartels firing upon our Border Patrol and Rangers, Mexican military firing upon our Arizona law enforcement personnel from hovering helicopters in USA territory, folks ignoring an international sovereign border are CRIMES according to duly enacted laws of the USA. You and President Obama apparently believe you get to decide which laws are enforced and which are not, I disagree and believe we must send a strong message to get this madness to STOP. Your way is not working…
  22. Lori RivasTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 12:36 pm
Someone fires on you? Completely different situation. Declaring, essentially, the death penalty for anyone crossing the border? Lack of humanity, and, really, murder. Shall we also kill those who hire undocumented workers? Also, shoot lawyers who represent immigrants in court system? How about those non-profits and churches that actively feed, house and clothe immigrants? Is their "encouragement" of immigration worthy of your shoot to maim/kill? Sunday's LA Times ran an article about a man who gains permission from ranchers to stock water jugs in open spaces known to have immigrants passing through -- shall we shoot this good Samaritan, and the ranchers that have given their approval?
  23. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 1:18 pm
Lori, violating a duly enacted law, a verbal warning to stop, and an additional warning shot puts the choice squarely on the person choosing to continue the action, so apparently we have a different interpretation of what constitutes murder and so does our USA legal system. I will not even respond to your other comments other than to say that any “churches” giving sanctuary, not simply humanitarian aid, to criminals should lose there non profit status since they have violated the law and erased any credible reason for maintaining their non profit status. It is not compassionate to continue to encourage folks to violate our sovereign borders and run the risks they are exposed to currently.
  24. FrankTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 5:48 pm
Berta, what about the Border Patrol killing multiple unarmed kids or USA helicopters flying over Mexican territory without permission? folks ignoring an international sovereign border are CRIMES according to duly enacted laws of the Mexico too... remember, it goes both ways... And don't get me wrong, I love the USA but precisely for that, you can not be blind sided. And then you talk about drug cartels... YES, those should be completely destroyed... they are creating part of the nightmare in Mexico thanks to the huge business it represents in the USA... Santa Clarita has an invaluable effort through ACTION to control and eradicate the use of drugs... if more efforts and resources were used to help initiatives like that, there would be no business and with no business no cartels... instead, there is a corrupt law enforcement on both sides of the border feeding that business. oh... and the weapons you mentioned are used to fire to the BP and USA helicopters... yes, they were fed to gangs through different American government plans like fast and furious... so, dont be afraid, just document yourself before speaking.

I doubt that will ever happen Bill. Errors like Mike’s happen because folks have their own particular agenda and speak with the side they agree with, but do not bother to engage the other side. Ms. Berta forgot to mention that she, wearing her American flag shirt, with her American flag pocketbook dangling from one of her two arms which carried a 3'X5' American Flag, crossed over to the counter protesters' side of the overpass, which at that time far outnumbered those on her side. She walked through us like an army tank wearing a huge scowl, while waving her flag from side to side in a very defiant way. Yeah, Berta was promoting "Americanism"! Her post above has the accuracy of G.W. Bush's rational for sacrificing so many lives in Iraq. Reynolds' comment as do all of his posts make me cringe or laugh. It's important to note that from 9AM until 12:15 PM, when I left, there were two women protesters with blond hair; all of the other protesters had grey/silver hair and ALL the protesters were white. America was clearly identified by the youth and the variety of the counter protesters who outnumbered the protesters significantly until about 11AM when additional protesters started arriving 2 hours AFTER the SIGNAL promoted their starting time.
  33. BertaMonday, July 21st, 2014 at 4:36 pm
Yes, I am proud of being an American and your point is? Moreover, I am also Caucasian AND Hispanic again your point is? I parked on that side of the street and walked on your side looking for a cross walk and finding none on that side, had to walk right back through you. I don't recall scowling or being defiant but if that was your impression again, your point is? As to age and race of protestors, we had some Hispanics, a mixed race infant on daddy's chest, and a couple of other kids at several points and again your point is? PS all of your protestors were also "white" and your point is...Oh, never mind.

What a sad pathetic attempt at journalism. I felt like I was back in school reading the college newspaper. Snide, sarcastic, condescending, but nothing of substance. Unfortunately this level of writing is acceptable even on the national stage which is why our country is in rapid decline.

Shane and Nomex: Why don't you twerps stay glued to your Fox News and Rush Limbaugh and leave the clear air on this site unpolluted? Mike Devlin is a breath of fresh air to, in and for Santa Clarita. BTW, "Nomex", the migrant refugees are children from Central America - not from Mexico.
  44. ShaneTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 10:51 am
Wow! What a clever and original response. Fox News and Rush Limbaugh used in the same sentence to attack a conservative, I am at a total loss. This is the brilliant intellect of the left, yet ANOTHER shining example of why the country is in decline.
  45. blutoTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 12:20 pm
Wow, scvmjb, suck up much? It never fails to amuse how some people on this site think this type of reporting passes for "journalism". Nothing but partisan sniping by the most partisan among us. How partisan, you ask? Just look at this site for any criticism of the current administration...none. Obama's the perfect man...just ask Mike. Ignore the three state senators facing prison time for corruption, they're democrats. But hey, some republican may have sent an improper text message, let's get all over that! And that's the sorry state of "journalism" in this country. A corrupt press that ignores the failures of anything democrat and is already getting the sheeple that feed from it's trough ready to accept a Hillary administration. Mike's reporting feeds people who don't want to think for themselves. Pathetic.
  46. Yadira MartinezTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 12:50 pm
So let me get this straight, the United States of America was founded by a group of people entering the country illegally and almost wiping out the real Americans and making them prisoners in their own country. Talk about double standards. I'm not saying having a free for all border but come on look where we started. So Berta what job did an illegal immigrant take from you? Was it the field worker being exposed to extreme elements. Maybe the janitor cleaning sh*t off toilets all day long. I'm sure you'll have no problem getting one of these jobs (Si se puede!) but that means you have to give up your air condition desk job.
  47. Bill ReynoldsTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 12:57 pm
Here's an idea, lets erase our borders, dump our laws and throw down the welcome mat for every poor soul around the World.
  48. ShaneTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 1:17 pm
I like how the argument that no one else will clean up ****, mow lawns and pick fruit is used as a selling point to excuse the endless flow of illegal aliens coming into the country. What a contribution. How about aiming a little higher.
  49. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 1:30 pm
Yadira, the founders of this country came from many nations before there was a legal system of orderly immigration in place, same with folks in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Attempting to rewrite history does nothing to address the current situation where we have an orderly system for folks to legally immigrate to the USA that is being violated with impunity. My parents legally emigrated after there was a legal system in place, and they followed all applicable laws in order to receive permission to enter. I have worked many jobs, some great some not so much, and performed many volunteer services too; my job experience has nothing to do with the issue of illegal immigration. I and most other folks have no problem with work visas being granted to folks who have been screened and approved for legal entry via a work visa into the USA for those jobs that cannot be filled with American and legal immigrant workers.
  50. FrankTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 1:54 pm
Berta, that story is the pilar of so many advocates of people like you that say "alto o disparo"... Yes, thousands arrive through the right way, but the system is broken and your right way can take even decades for the right and talented people. Instead of fixing it, you'd rather say "alto o disparo"... chances are that you will fire first and then say halt. oh well.. Anyway, yes, the right screening process should weed out the people we dont want and invite the people that can contribute to this society, but you are so concerned about just pushing back anything that moves that you are missing the point that here, right inside, born inside, you have both the most talented and greatest people as well as the worst in the world, and your stereotypes and fear makes you think that all that comes from the outside is evil... no... it is not, but I don't think you want to see or understand and that it is understandable because that's what fear causes and unless you stop being afraid, will be very difficult for you to see that US is a generous, welcoming and loving country where talent can develop and grow. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014
  51. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 2:34 pm
Frank, you sure are good at making ASSumptions...but dispelling your ignorance is beyond my abilities.
  52. FrankTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 3:13 pm
Dear Berta, I think you are a very smart woman and I say that after knowing you for so long, but I have to clarify here, I don't see how you can assume I'm good at that because my text has facts: a) Thousands arrive through the right way, fact b) The system is broken and can take even decades doing the right way, fact c) The US has some of the most talented people in the world, fact d) The US has some of the worst people in the world, fact e) People with fear make stereotypes, fact f) You are afraid from the people coming in, fact g) The US is a generous, welcoming and loving country, fact h) Usually people that overcome their fears can aim to higher levels of mental state, fact Now, here is an assumption: By mistake you pressed the CAPS key while writing the word "assumptions" and it looks funny, or you intentionally tried to be funny... either way, it was funny.
  53. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 3:41 pm
The caps were intentional, and your facts are faulty particularly f). You also do not know me or you would not claim that " Instead of fixing it, you'd rather say "alto o disparo"... chances are that you will fire first and then say halt". Nor would you attribute to me "because that's what fear causes and unless you stop being afraid, will be very difficult for you to see that US is a generous, welcoming and loving country where talent can develop and grow." But as I said your ignorance is beyond my ability to dispel so carry on...
  54. FrankTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 3:56 pm
See.. sometimes people get assumptions right... so you were intentionally funny and not by mistake. Anyway, aside from the good joke and going back to the facts, let me copy a text from you: "The procedure along México’s southern border is for armed guards patrolling ANYWHERE along their border to order ALL persons “Alto o te disparo”,... ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot" So, in fact, you said that... not my words, yours.. not ASSumptions, facts... Now, you know that the Border Patrol has several cases where agents have shot kids from the US side shooting to Mexico side... I guess that does not bother you because it is just kids like the ones you were rallying against, but what if from Mexico a police shoot from Mexico to a kid, say in San Ysidro... mmmm... not the same right... or is it the same? and you would be outraged on either way? I thought so, specially coming from someone that says: "ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot"... People who is afraid can make more frightening things... Berta, you said: "ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot" and you go agaist little toddlers, little kids, adults or seniors for equal... "ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot"
  55. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 4:46 pm
Frank like others you suffer from selective editing. I was asked a question by Mike and answered: If the current situation were to continue unabated and there is a call to arms by civilians to protect our border many will answer it. You chose to excise the part you wanted without the rest and that is dishonest. Our conversation is over.
  56. FrankTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 4:56 pm
Dear Berta, That's ok... all goes back to fear... but "kill with no regrets"... that's why you show no regrets with little kids that are running out from fear... and now you think killing with no regrets is ok... You have a lot of fear my friend but fear no more, you'll shoot anyone that ANYONE failing to heed YOUR verbal warning... and yes, I'm glad this conversation is over... you are a lost cause... go back to your lala land where "...there is a call to arms by civilians to protect our border..." OMG you are hilarious!!! and one last recommendation for you... You are watching too much TV and it is now starting to affect you... seriously...! See you later and I hope you wave to me on my way back home ;)
  57. DocTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 1:46 pm
Berta, Bill... Hey... lets rally again and show all these ignorant that want to take over the beauties of our country and all the riches we have... I heard that there are planes chartered from Israel coming to LAX filled with kids from Israel. They are flying to US escaping from the terror they are living... Lets rally to LAX and tell them to go back... We don't want them here! This is OUR land and just for US... if they want aid, they should wait for it over there... What is that thing of coming here to take what belongs to us... right!? C'mon, lets send those Israeli kids back to where they belong... Once we do that they will see we are not racists... right? right Berta? Right Bill? because we are not ... really...

Why bring up the presidents skin color? What are you a racist, is that all you see?
  61. blutoTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 3:43 pm
Hey Yadira, just whose immigration office should those first settlers have checked in at? Do you have any more ridiculous comparisons? And 1st GenAmerican, no one brought up skin color til you did in your post, then you accuse others of racism! You just can't make this stuff up, folks!
  62. Very BlutoTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 4:03 pm
Bluto, read this article... very interesting... was posted earlier and explains some history. More than 12,000,000 immigrants were welcomed through Ellis Island... food for thought.
  63. blutoTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 5:39 pm
What was Ellis Island called when the first settlers came ashore here? Where was the immigration office?

You let racists rant long enough, they out themselves. Lol
  67. BertaTuesday, July 22nd, 2014 at 11:17 pm
Your response to folks who disagree with you on illegal immigration is calling them "racists". That says more about you than it says about them counselor...
  68. FrankWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 6:02 am
Oh my dear berta... Now its evident it's not only fear what you have... You don't know how to read either. It's not that you are racist because you disagree.. It's because the reasons and motives you have expressed on this forum.. So unfortunate of you..
  69. ShaneWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 8:06 am
Berta, you can't argue with a liberal because they deal in fantasy and utopian phrases that do not translate to reality, history or human experience. You might as well be debating Corky from Life Goes On.
  70. frankWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 8:41 am
Right..or because when arguments and reason fails it's better to give up and walk out... And it's not about conservatives or liberals it's about common sense and humanity. Lady beta advocating to kill little kids is a shame...a shame on human kind

Frank my friend, you are making one huge leap with your assertion. Ha!
  72. FrankWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 12:11 pm
Bill, thank you for considering me your friend... I appreciate it and by knowing Berta, I don't think she would actually execute the actions, but she applauds them and promotes them which imo, one is as bad as the other.
  73. BertaWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 1:30 pm
Frank, I know all of my neighbors. I have no friends or neighbors by the name of Frank, so unless you are using a phony name because you are too chicken **** to call me a racist using your real name, stuff it. You do not know me at all and it is an idiot’s leap for you and others from saying I will do what is necessary to defend the international borders of my country to saying that I am advocating murdering babies and am a racist. It is folks like you who try to silence those of us who believe in the rule of law. We are begging our federal government to do its job, and are willing to do the job if Obama continues to refuse to stop the influx of illegal aliens and forces me and others to take up arms to prevent this lawlessness from continuing. I am a law-abiding citizen and taking up arms to defend my border is not something I take lightly but as I said, you do not know me. The problem with some of you folks is that you cannot abide it when someone calls you out on an inaccurate portrayal of events such as that put forward by Mike, nor accept honest answers to questions asked. You instead decide to put your own spin on it and start calling names. Where is your outrage for all of our CITIZEN and LEGAL immigrant children living in poverty, subjected to gang violence, rape, poverty, poor schools, absent parents, lousy government policies, etc which are destroying any hope for their futures? What are you doing about the murder rate in our inner cities? Failing schools? Should all of those children, seniors, rape victims, unemployed, poor, etc folks be given refugee status by México, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador? What goodies do you think our citizens will be given by the people and governments of those countries? How about our homeless and veterans living and dying in blighted neighborhoods with gang-infested streets? Where is your resolve to help them? Your kind are the same folks who called our returning Vietnam Vets baby killers, but where is your outrage for the terrorists who send their kids with bombs strapped to kill innocent folks and our citizens? So if we kill one of those kids are we murderers or defending our own? Are you aware that there are many terrorist groups operating freely in México and other nearby countries? How many terrorists, kids or adults, do you think are waiting for their green cards in their home countries? How many do you think are crossing our borders with this latest influx of illegals instead? Gang members and other criminals, same questions? I am so sick of the name calling, although I understand that those of your ilk have nothing else to offer. There are no cogent arguments to allow our borders to continuously be overrun by foreigners coming from all over the world. A legal immigration process protects a country and provides for a screening process to determine who is allowed to enter after meeting all approved requirements and is a fair way for all prospective immigrants to have a chance to come here. So much for Obama’s everyone gets a fair shot (no pun intended). Illegal aliens are not following the process, are not being fair to those waiting and going through the process and meeting our requirements, are not ENTITLED to be in the USA, and should not be allowed to continue violating our laws and coming without permission, plain and simple. That is the law, you do not like it try to change it, but good luck especially after this debacle. I realize that it is genuinely pointless to try to reason with you or likeminded individuals but I had a little extra time to waste today….
  74. FrankWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 1:45 pm
Wow... so much anger... I can imagine what would you do with armed and angry... No, not a phony name (so no stuffing anything here ;)... no, not your neighbor but you do have made a name of your own... So... do you know that the current president has the record of deportations? Soooo... maybe thats news for you too... soooo relax again, no need to be so bitter now that you know that.... And yes, as a fellow American, you can start to become more open and welcoming and generous and less violent. From what I read you do make a lot of ASSumptions (just like you, caps were intentional) but tafter all your rant I have to agree on your last paragraph: "legal aliens are not following the process, are not being fair to those waiting and going through the process and meeting our requirements, are not ENTITLED to be in the USA, and should not be allowed to continue violating our laws and coming without permission". The main difference between you and I is that I think those cases should be looked at, and people that are eligible, welcome them after due process and by all means, start contributing to enrich our country... those not, back to where they belong. You, on the other hand, will say: "alto o disparo" and you are out. And coming back to topic, the kids in question, are looking for asylum on one of the most generous and wonderful countries in the world. They are kids that arrived escaping from terror and if due process is follow, many of them are eligible to stay, but unfortunately, some people are saying: "Not here.. this is mine and will never be yours...". Some more radicals are saying: "Hey kid! Alto o disparo"

  78. MikeWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 6:41 pm
I love how Berta's account of the people in attendance was both contradicted by the organizers themselves and shown to be false with photographic evidence, and she's still sticking to her story. And still calling me a liar, to boot.
  79. BertaWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 6:48 pm
Mike, next time I'll take a camera, and yes your account of the rally is incorrect. I am not calling you a liar because you were not there during the entire time that I was, however I am calling your account inaccurate and very biased, I expected better from you, now I'll know better.
  80. MikeWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 7:12 pm
Berta, for the 50th time. There are 13 people in the photo. You claimed a maximum of 11. And still you won't concede. Not even that point. What are you proving?
  81. Bill ReynoldsWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 7:43 pm
Yo Mike, love ya man, but Berta busted you. This left leaning article of yours ain't workin'. But nice try... make a factual video next time. No whut I meen, dood! :-)
  82. BertaWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 7:46 pm
Mike, for the 51st time then, I never argued your 13, I said at PEAK attendance when WE numbered about 40 there were 11 on the other side, which quickly dropped to 3, go back and reread my comments. Moreover, that was only one of the inaccurate “facts” you reported which I disputed. Your bias is blinding your objectivity as it did when you posted your article.

  87. DConstanceWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 6:59 pm
Frank, I agree with much of what you've written here, but you're fighting an uphill battle because so many of the claims made by the anti-immigrant protestors are based on misinformation, if not outright lies. One person posted in this thread that these children are not leaving Central America due to violence, but because President Obama has welcomed them with open arms. We know that he has deported a record number of people who entered illegally. And today, I found out that statements refuting the violence in those countries were issued by Congress members who did their "fact-finding" from the security of their hotel rooms. They didn't want to step outside due to the violence. It's scary to me that so many people are willing to believe what they are told without question. Any time someone says or insinuates that he and he alone, is the only source of truth (thinking Glenn Beck, etc.), you're looking at a cult and people should run in the opposite direction. Even more frightening is the threat of vigilantism by some who claim to abide by the rule of law. Immigration without going through the proper channels is illegal, but so is undertaking law enforcement without legal authority.
  88. SCVMJBWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 7:40 pm
Their million march on D.C. was a royal flop - the equivalent of a major sink hole.. The national protest on Saturday of these Migrant children was a dismal failure. Various sites, especially on Facebook, that were used during the time prior to the recent Primary Elections were taken over by right-wing rabied ranters. And sadly to say, they have taken over this one...that is until something intellectual or something definitely non-partisan comes along and they'll sit on their thumbs waiting for direction.
  89. FrankWednesday, July 23rd, 2014 at 8:38 pm
Memo to Mike... Run before Berta gets angry once she realizes how to count with more than 2 hands (she can use the toes too).... she might say "Alto o Disparo"... with no regrets..
  90. David Barlavi, Esq.Thursday, July 24th, 2014 at 6:41 am
FYI, one sure sign of a racist, other than bullying Latino children in distress, is that when you call them out as racists, instead of proving how they are not racist, they turn around and call you racist for noticing their racism. Lol It's the old "I'm rubber, you're glue" 4th grade argument. Lol
  91. blutoThursday, July 24th, 2014 at 10:30 am
We have to prove we're not racist just because you call us racists? Like I asked you earlier, how many years of law school to learn that tactic? You bring nothing but name calling and baseless accusations and then demand we defend ourselves against your ridiculous assertions..... This is pretty good advertising. Anyone reading your posts would be a fool to hire you to defend them ...I can see the plan would be, "Your Honor, my client is innocent because all those accusers are racists! The defense rests."
  92. BertaThursday, July 24th, 2014 at 1:00 pm
You know what I find amazing, that even an attorney like David Barlavi, who presumably has had the benefit of higher education, apparently throws out words like “racist” without comprehending the meaning of the word. I understand that he and others resort to name calling because they really have no valid argument to support illegal immigration and personally find that their ridiculous insults only serve to strengthen my resolve to speak out.
  93. FrankThursday, July 24th, 2014 at 2:42 pm
Go Berta go!! Go Berta go!! you sound much relaxed... very proud of you .. you go girl! Now, what is interesting is that when you run out of arguments, you dont resort to name calling.. you call for arms and start shooting! (Berta dixt)

That 4th Grade argument was started by you, David. LOL
  95. ShaneThursday, July 24th, 2014 at 11:59 am
David and his buddies on the left are just overcompensating for the horrible racist past of the Democratic Party and projecting their racist beliefs onto conservatives to divert attention. Let's us remember, it was a Democrat who bombed the Chinese in WWII, it was a Democrat who put Japanese Americans into internment camps, it was the democrats who opposed and even filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it was the Democrats who opposed the voting rights act of 1965, it was a prominent Democratic Senator Robert Byrd who was deeply involved with the KKK, and it is the Democratic Party today who labels black conservatives as Uncle Tom's and porch monkeys. Not to mention I read someone say Obama has deported more illegals than any other president. If this is true that would make anyone who supports Obama including Obama himself a... wait for it.........racist! LOL.

WHAT HAPPENED TO: "...one nation under God,.." ; "All men [and women] are created equal and endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..."; "...with liberty and justice for all."; and especially, given this thread: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Ok. So selective reading by Bill Reynolds leaves me to believe we should bomb the Statue of Liberty or move the statue to a new base and bomb the old one? He is such a militarist! He must be the only Veteran that the Republicans in Congress let slip through the cracks for the others that are being ignored and abandoned as a results of recent votes against veterans by the Republican majority.

Hey scvmjb, it's turrible year for democrats.
  101. Lori RivasThursday, July 24th, 2014 at 11:17 pm
This little quote from Berta continues to bother me, greatly: "ANYONE failing to heed MY verbal warning will be shot, the first round aimed to wound and if that does not stop them, the second round aimed to kill with no regrets unless they are also armed in which case first shot is kill shot. I suspect other armed civilians would follow similar protocol..." If that is not despicable and reprehensible lawlessness, I don't know what is. To advocate for *shooting* all immigrants crossing the border, to brag about a total lack of remorse for KILLING someone who has not even committed a violent act....I just cannot believe that anyone is comfortable with not only holding such derelict views, but broadcasting those views, and continually defending such views. And I am not even touching on the subject at hand, which is unaccompanied minors - CHILDREN - crossing the border. My God. Shooting children. Is this what passes for an acceptable solution to political and economic issues? I would think such talk would be borderline illegal, inciting acts of violence. Political disagreements are one thing. Advocating for unprovoked maiming and killing is quite another.
  102. BertaFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 11:32 am
Lori what I find fascinating is that you and others on this blog focus on my answer regarding possible worst case last ditch activism and insurrection and completely ignore everything else that I said about the government doing its job, glad that Governor Perry has called up the National Guard so that civilians do not have to secure our borders, that most of these illegal aliens are not unaccompanied innocent children, etc. and instead continue to paint me as some psycho baby killer. This is precisely why folks do not engage your side in any meaningful dialogue; my mistake was in actually believing that readers of this blog preferred a factual accounting of the local protest rally, or honest answers to questions posed by Mike. I should have realized that is not the case since apparently most readers of this blog prefer Mike’s very biased and inaccurate version of events and folks not answering controversial questions. So be it…

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/06/16/supreme-court-facebook-threats-free-speech/10326233/ LOL
  104. Lori RivasFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 11:57 am
Advocating violence, even death, against those are not physically threatening anyone is NEVER a last ditch effort, Berta, and that is what is so reprehensible. Your comments about shooting to maim and kill are so over the top repugnant that it is impossible to even consider anything else you think you have to offer in this conversation.
  105. FrankFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 12:22 pm
Berta is now talking about a dialog... Berta, my question is: Is that dialog before or after you shooting? Because apparently if a person does not agree with you is just plain wrong... and if someone is plain wrong, in your eyes, well... might run into a very bad situation... anyway... when you say: "that most of these illegal aliens are not unaccompanied innocent children" that, my dear Berta, was the point of the rally and the point of this discussion... yes, thousands of innocent children escaping from horror, looking for a safe heaven and arriving to the USA to find a welcome "Alto o disparo" from Berta! Hopefully they speak Spanish as fluently as you because God forbid they are coming from another country, speak another language or is just a group of kids on a field trip from the YMCA... They might end up in a bad bad situation with you..
  106. Bill ReynoldsFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 12:45 pm
Berta, it's impossible to reason with progressives. For them, this is about emotion and feelings..... the sovereignty of our USA is completely irrelevant to them. While worrying about children they are perfectly content to champion abortion. Go figure....
  107. Lori RivasFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 12:51 pm
There is no "reasoning" with advocating physical violence and death for those crossing the border without papers. This is not calling out someone with different political views. This is a whole different beast. This is about killing people, as a solution for political and social issues.
  108. Bill ReynoldsFriday, July 25th, 2014 at 1:20 pm
Lori, I honestly believe you are making a mountain out of mole hill rather than focusing on the underlying issues. We are a nation of laws and if they were followed we wouldn't have this problem.
