  • Like the Old Days, but Not Face to Face: Imagine a way you could communicate with your neighbors. No, without having to see them in person. Nextdoor is a new (currently) ad-free social media site that allows neighbors to keep in touch with each other, and the Sheriff's Department sees potential in using it to keep people notified. KHTS
  • Discussing the Billboards: The Signal hosted a discussion/forum/debate/? between City Council members Bob Kellar and TimBen Boydston last night to talk about the merits/drawbacks of Measure S and what it means for electronic definitely-not-Vegas-style billboards in the SCV. I Heart SCV was in attendance and things got testy at times. (Example, Reena Newhall ID'ing lobbyist Arthur Sohikian as "the bad guy" and Lila Littlejohn telling Petz to put his shoes back on.) Side note: Remember back in 2005/06 when the city was gung-ho about flexing some zoning code muscle and pulling down the Santa Clarita Athletic Club's electronic sign at Calgrove/I-5?   • A Monumental Decision: President Obama is set to sign an executive order designating the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument. While the move is upsetting some county officials, who say it may have negative impacts on roads, flood control, water resources and fire suppression, outdoor advocates like Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel expect it to open up more resources.   • Not to Disturb You, But...: Very good explainer graphic on exactly what Ebola does to the body. LA Register 
  • The Economic Horizon: An economist is forecasting that L.A. County will return to pre-recession employment levels next year. What won't necessarily change, however, is the ability (or inability) to buy an affordable home. Daily News
  • Old Buildings Don't Always Die: This is nice news. After 20 years shut up like a big time capsule in downtown L.A. the county's Hall of Justice has been rededicated for use. Among those who will be moving back into the storied structure is the Sheriff's Department, currently at a less-than-inspiring space in Monterey Park. Daily News
  • The State of Things: The Newhall School District is hosting a "State of the District" meeting later this month, with an agenda including construction project updates. KHTS
