  • As Long As Possible: Congressman-elect Steve Knight said he's going to hold onto to his Senate seat until he absolutely has to vacate the position to take his place as 25th District Congressman early next year. The Signal
  • From City Council to Congress: Among The Signal's profiles of city founders was this one of Howard "Buck" McKeon. Notably absent is any mention of Cemex. The Signal
  • Slowing Things Down: "Even if LAUSD were to try to slow the growth of charters, school board members would face an uphill battle. State law provides few acceptable reasons for rejecting applications to open charter schools. Those causes mostly center on the application process and proposed academic program." Compared to LAUSD, Santa Clarita Valley has practically has no problems when it comes to charter schools. Meanwhile the sprawling district to the south of SClarita has approved 126 charter schools in 5 years and is trying to figure out to stem a tide that affects traditional public schools. Daily News
  • One of the Good Guys: The SCV Sheriff's Station lost a great deputy last week, after "Uncle Joe" Trejo retired after more than 30 years with the Sheriff's Department. Joe was (well, probably still is) a stand-up guy, one who cared about building relationships with residents in Newhall where he worked a beat for years, and as community relations officer for the station.   • Setting an Example: As the city looks at adding more center medians to local roads, Councilman TimBen Boydston is calling for the city to lead by example when it comes to the landscaping typically found in those medians, especially in the midst of a drought. The Signal
  • By the Numbers: During a Friday night DUI checkpoint in Saugus, deputies detained more than 1,300 of the 1,700-plus who passed through, and arrested three for driving without a license. The Signal

  • The Ever-Changing Rate: Heading into the holiday season, Santa Clarita had an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent. Not bad, particularly when compared to November 2013's 5.7 percent. KHTS
