Santa Clarita Ain't What it Used to Be (it's actually much safer)

With so much crime in the news lately, talk on social media has turned nostalgic for the Santa Clarita of yesterday. What have we lost? Where’s the Awesometown of 5, 10, 20 years ago?
To take nothing away from the bump in crime last month and the tragic events in the headlines, I have some good news: our nostalgia is misplaced. Crime in Santa Clarita is significantly lower than it was back in the day; it’s not even close. 
The chart below comes from the FBI’s data, which goes back to 1990, plus the LASD’s 2014 numbers (the FBI’s 2014 report isn’t available yet).

    It's all relative - you have to compare the number of crimes reported lately to the number reported in prior periods. If the new number is lower that the prior number, then no matter how large that number is, it is a decrease.
