- Castaic Town Council to hold election: The CATC will hold an election in January to "fill the vacancy left by council member Paul Fancett, who resigned this fall," the Signal reports today. The election, scheduled for January 26, 2008, will only be held if more than one candidate applies for the seat. Wait, that sounds like the recent COC Board election.
- Shelter Delayed, now open: Both the Signal and KHTS reported yesterday on the delay in opening the Santa Clarita winter homeless Shelter. Carol Rock at KHTS said that shelter staff were dealing with "construction setbacks" and the need for an ADA-compliant ramp to be installed. Meanwhile, over at the Daily News, Pat Aidem reports on volunteers who will staff the shelter and companies and organizations who have donated to it. Over 100 people stayed at the shelter last year. - Rim of Valley Corridor study passes House: Update on a story mentioned here on SCVTalk last week : The House has OK'd a bill that would study the "expansion of the Santa Monica National Recreation Area" by including the mountains and terrain west of Santa Clarita, generally known as the Rim of the Valley. The Daily News' Lisa Friedman says the passage of the bill is a "significant win" for supporters of a potential new national recreation park. The area to be studied is some 500,000 acres of canyons, mountains and "some of the most beautiful land in Southern California." Sen. Dianne Feinstein has an identical bill in the Senate. Link

- Hit 'n Runs in the SCV: The Daily News carried an interesting story Monday on the amount of hit and runs in the SFV, the SCV, and elsewhere. While SFV motorists who get hit stand a "50-50 chance" of seeing the other driver flee the scene, in Santa Clarita the rate is about 24%. Rick Coca, the Daily News reporter, talked with a detective at the SCV Sheriff's office who said that hit 'n run drivers have some interesting and stupid excuses once they are caught. ""Your whole front-end is smashed up. How could you not know you hit somebody?" Link
- New Christian High school part 2: Sharon Cotal reports on the potential new Christian high school that may result from the merger of an SCV Christian academy and a Sun Valley Christian school. The high school would be known as "Legacy Christian High School" and organizers hope to have it built within two to four years. "We want a spiritually strong, academically strong and athletically strong Christian high school campus," the superintendent of the SCV school told the Signal.
- Reflections on Recent Violence: "I am usually a glass-half-full kind of gal but today I'm feeling a little less than confident of our status as one of the safest cities on the planet. In the last week or so we've had a stabbing death in Stevenson Ranch, another stabbing in Canyon Country and a drive-by shooting death in Newhall. What's going on around here?!" Parks commish and City Council candidate Laurie Ender asks in a blog post. What do you think? Are the spectacular incidents of violence in recent weeks a sign of things to come or are they simply isolated incidents that tend to make big headlines?
- That time of the year again: Captain Anthony LaBerge has been on the job for a little less than a year, but it's reasonable to say he's already raised the profile of the SCV Sheriff's Station in the community. A regular fixture at Council meetings and community events, LaBerge has become much more well-known and respected in the SCV than some of his predecessors. He reflects on the past year -including the Canyon Country Rapist and the fires- and says the department will make a big push next year to get the Magic Mountain station renovation and expansion underway with the City's help. He doesn't mention the recent violence in Newhall and Stevenson Ranch, though he does talk a bit about a "Parent's Guide to Teenage Parties." Ironic, no? Captain's message
