- Skeleton partially ID'd: Bones found buried in the hills above Canyon High School on Thanksgiving Day have been identified as a 35-70 year old male's who probably died between eight and 10 years ago, according to a Karen Elowitt's report in today's Signal. Authorities hope more clues about the individual will be unearthed, however, and Elowitt says the County Coroner's office has a good track record of identifying such remains.
- No new applicants for Open Space Panel: Last week, the City extended the deadline for applicants who wished to serve on the Open Space Audit Committee, which would oversee city efforts to purchase lands with public bond money. The deadline was extended until Dec. 28, but so far, no one else has applied. In the article, Katie Geyer also details a few of the current applicants which include open space measure opponent Jim Farley, naturalist Wendy Langhans, Canyon Country advocate Alan Ferdman, and Sierra Club chairman Henry Shultz. If you've been watching the open space drama over the last several months, this is a must-read article.
- Old Testament Flooding Expected, Officials gather one of every kind: Okay, maybe it won't be quite that bad, but you know things could get interesting when the City of Santa Clarita plays meteorologist and sends out press releases advising residents to prepare for two to three inches of rain in the next 48 hours. The "cold, fast-moving winter storm could dump up to a half-inch of rain per hour during peak periods" starting tonight, and officials are worried about burn areas. Meanwhile, in a masterstroke of timing, the County Fire Department, area lifeguards, and swift-water rescue teams staged a public demonstration/practice session for the public (and school children) on Wednesday at Castaic Lake. Jerry Berrios has more on that, while Weather Underground's animated satellite images and radar maps will guide you through the coming deluge
- Slain 18 year old was good student athlete: Bryan Miranda, the 18 year old Hart High Grad who was killed during a drive by shooting in Newhall on Sunday, was a model student and a solid athlete, according to Karen Elowitt's profile of him in today's Signal. Elowitt spoke with Miranda's English professor at COC who had nothing but praise for the young man. "I've been doing this for 28 years, and I'm pretty good at picking out the ones that [sic] will turn out good in the end, and he [Miranda] was one," the prof told Elowitt. Miranda's funeral will be on Tuesday at OLPH in Newhall. No suspects have been named and no descriptions (other than the brown Toyota Camry) have been released.
- 21 Month old Girl hit by car, airlifted: The Signal says a 21 month old girl was "critically injured" after a burgundy-colored SUV hit her and sped off in Newhall on Wednesday afternoon. The girl was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, and the police don't know who the driver is, but think he may be a Latino male in his early 20s.
- Levitz Shutting Down? So says a press release from the company. The furniture maker has one store in Santa Clarita- the massive showroom in the Valencia Marketplace on the Old Road in Stevenson Ranch. With all the retail space being built up in the SCV (Bridgeport Marketplace, mall expansion), one wonders if we'll have a surplus of vacant retail spaces soon.
- LA County's Forgotten dead: Pat Aidem has a moving and elegant story in today's Daily News on graves for people who had no one to claim them when they died. Among the thousands buried in cemetaries around the county (marked only by the year they died in) are a woman who died in a fire and a Saugus teens who's bones were found in a forest. Daily News
- Two from Tim Myers: Gary Horton's "Religion doesn't belong in Politics" editorial and the controversial cartoon that accompanied it last week are still causing people to complain to the Signal. Looking at the outrage, former Signal Columnist Tim Myers says it's apparently amateur hour on Creekside. Of Jay Harn, the Signal's new publisher, Myers says: "one expects more from the folks producing the print media. Even if they don’t agree with a particular viewpoint on their editorial page they should at least find themselves with enough intellect to articulate it properly, rather than stumbling around with half hearted apologies and promises to act with more sensitivity to the illiterate in the future when constructing the editorial page." And then in a letter to the editor today, Myers sarcastically apologizes for slamming the Signal last week and says the Signal's reporting on the injured stabbing victim from Stevenson Ranch was so bad that the newspaper ought to just "cut and paste from press releases" rather than write news stories from scratch. Myers continues to be quite harsh on the Signal, yet his posts aren't quite as entertaining as Dave Bossert's old "Fish Wrap" rants.
