  • David Gauny, gracious in defeat, probably won’t seek a recount and says he’s pleased he came so close to unseating an incumbent.  SIGNAL
  • That article is more flattering for Gauny than the Daily News article, which mentions the whole “Proud Racist” thing DAILY NEWS
  • The LA Times hints that some Santa Claritans don’t appreciate Ferry poaching our athletic talent LA TIMES

  • I HEART SCV gets frank on Ferry (including a Ferry/STD comparison) and says he found correlation (but not causation) between large glossy mailers and votes for the incumbents. I HEART SCV
  • “It’s a shame to be so close to seeing positive change in the Santa Clarita Valley only to have it slip away,” Dave Bossert writes in a piece called “Darkness Continues to Shroud the Land.” He says he hopes Gauny runs in 2012 and says he and other unincorporated leaders will resist attempts to annex and divide communities. Also, he says those who spoke out against the City and incumbents can expect retribution. WRB
  • Jonathan Randles’ clever piece on whether David Galvan was ‘put’ on the ballot to confuse Gauny voters. “Galvan’s candidacy was no accident. I made some discoveries about Galvan, after reading unfounded rumors on the Internet, guzzling eight cups of coffee and spending all night on my chalkboard drawing out connections between G-A-L-V-A-N and communism.” SIGNAL
  • Hart Board approves controversial books in a 3-2 vote, with Messina and Jensen voting no. Teachers may use the book “The Glass Castle” with students in 11th and 12th grades as long as a note is sent home to parents. SIGNAL
  • Deep Thought: What would happen if Tea Partiers dressed in colonial outfits happened upon the Cowboy Poetry Festival?   • Assemblyman Cameron Smyth says last year’s 18% pay cut to state legislators was fair but has hurt his family. He thinks a further paycut of 10%, under consideration in the state’s compensation commission, could be “seen as heavy handed.” SAC BEE
  • 40 years of Earth Day YAHOO
  • Governor Schwarzenegger is organizing opposition to fellow Republicans and Texas-based oil interests who are trying to defeat his 2006 landmark AB 32 Global Warming Solutions bill. “And isn’t that interesting that it’s a Texas oil company, and other Texas oil companies, that want to roll back our environmental progress that we are making? Why is that? Do you think they care about California, or do you think they care only about profits? They are greedy,” he told the LA TIMES
  • I’ve been doing the Daily Brief longer than Mike Allen has been doing the “Playbook” for the juiced-up webzine Politico.com, but his daily email newsletter of politics, media and Washington gossip is read by more than a few people in Santa Clarita. Okay no real comparison, but the NY TIMES Mag piece on Allen and Politico is really interesting NY TIMES
  • More Arizona craziness: The Arizona House has passed a bill that would require presidential candidates to prove they were born in America to Arizona authorities. Gee what do you think this is about? CBS NEWS
  • Local retired Air Force Colonel and airline pilot is a navigator for a NASA science crew that flies over the Arctic to study climate change. What a job! SIGNAL
  • The Hart District’s decision to cancel 8th Grade promotion ceremonies is one of the worst decisions anyone could make in like, all of human history. In fact, as far as totally terrible decisions go, it ranks up there with restriping Decoro for bicycle riders. Yes. It’s that bad says this hysterical Letter Writer

    Regarding the Randles story, let’s remember that it was Galvan himself who made confusion with Gauny one of the “big issues” of his campaign. From the SCVMomsBlog interview: JACKIE: “David [Galvan], I have to say, um, I think you’re like the mystery candidate for some of us.” DAVID: “Yes, I would, I would have to say the same thing. You know what, it’s…it’s been a very interesting campaign. I know that I’ve talked to a few people out there and myself and David Gauny have been confused quite a bit because we have similar names” JACKIE: “Right. Maybe it’s the David G. thing?” DAVID “Yeah. So we get confused quite a bit. And what I’m trying to work on right now is actually trying to…not seper-…not necessarily separating us but kind of differentiating I’m David Galvan, and he’s David Gauny so we don’t really get confused because that seems to be the big issue right now.”

    Randles’ time would have been better spent following up any number of other stories. What happened to the follow-up story on Daniel Henriquez’ degree from the University of New Orleans? One would think the local paper would let the public know whether someone who is running an “accounting” business really has the credentials he claims to have. But no, Randles chose instead to write a humor piece and the editor chose to place it on the front page. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

    Randles has all kinds of time to do spoof pieces on David Glavan, but no time to do a follow up piece on the front page above the fold Harry Katz story he penned. Jaonathan is guilty of journalistic malpractice. This is the real conspiracy of the 2010 election.

    Believe me when I tell you that the number of organizations, in business and anti-tax that oppose AB-32 and intend to work towards it’s eventual defeat number the stars. This is an ill-conceived venture launched at a time when California cannot afford it. AB-32 is a job killer and a company exporter.

    Petz has had a pending LTE since last Sunday which calls upon The Signal to simply do a follow up story which fully explains the details of and confirms the source of the letter to David Gauny. To publish such a story with no follow up or investigation-to leave a cloud of confusion over three candidates prior to election day is muckraking journalism at it’s worst. To date, there has been no follow up or even a LTE from a citizen or affected candidate published. There is a conspiracy to protect Harrison Katz from the real world consequence of his action.

    Big salary for not doing much or having any accountability. Let’s not forget the daily expense account Cam collects, and the freebies he receives from companies like Edison..

    Very good and classy that David G will not spend the money on a recount. Obviously getting good advice that with a 32 vote spread a recount would be a great waste of time and money.

    I’m surprised that in addition the “David Galvan was a plant” canard, Gauny hasn’t alleged that his 32 vote loss was the result of votes cast by illegals. But then again, the day isn’t over.

    Although this must be a difficult loss for David , he has conducted himself with class and dignity throughout the campaign and vote count. David was subject to vicious personal attack, whisper, and innuendo, yet he remained unruffled. Petz has not heard him try to make any excuses or second guess himself-he has political future in this valley if he wants one. Gauny was way ahead of the curve on illegal immigration and he has the wounds to show for it.

    Petz I agree with your assessment. David Gauny is a classy gentleman who has a bright future. He has shown grace under fire and a willingness to tackle the difficult issues. I hope he is not unduly discouraged and remains involved in our local politics.
