  • David Gauny and Roger Gitlin like the new restrictive and controversial Arizona illegal immigration law. Gitlin: “I think it’ s a tremendous idea.” SIGNAL
  • Metrolink increases fares by 6%, but doesn’t cut any trains from the Antelope Valley line. Marsha McLean was at the meeting where the decision was made and she argued for more trains on our line, not less DAILY NEWS
  • Median home prices in Santa Clarita fall in March to $400,000 (it was $410k in February) but sales increased over all. Condo prices increased to $240,000 from $199,500 a year ago. DAILY NEWS

  • Congress pondering a $100 billion bailout for cities across the country. Cities like Colorado Springs are now charging residents for streetlights, and an Ohio town has told its residents to arm themselves because they’re laying off cops. Republicans oppose the idea saying the deficit is too high. If it passes though, will Santa Clarita get anything? That’ll teach us to be fiscally responsible! LA TIMES
  • Mayo Hospital opening new Emergency Room and ICU. The expanded ER will be able to treat 65,000 emergency patients per year. And within a few weeks, Mayo will start construction on a new parking garage and helipad says the SIGNAL
  • There are no such things as ghosts, but it’s fun to suspend your rational mind for a bit and ponder the possibilities at Heritage Junction. Personally I think my plumbing is haunted by the ghosts of the Tataviam people because it makes an aliklik sound SIGNAL
  • In this bleak post-election landscape where the incumbents are once again safely at the wheel, Not a Ferry Fan pivots and celebrates the Tax Day Tea Party in this video
  • Dave Bossert made a trip to Old Town Newhall last week and boy was he shocked. “There was a strangeness to the area,” he writes, saying that some of the businesses had signs in Spanish. Gasp! Is it true? There are Mexicans in town? He also apparently doesn’t know that it is now Main Street, not San Fernando Road. His main complaint is that the City shouldn’t have diverted traffic onto Railroad, bypassing all the businesses. Whatevs. Old Town Newhall is getting better by the day, it’s a pleasure to walk/ride hang out in that area now. It’s become my favorite lunch spot. WEST RANCH BEACON

    On Stephen Baldwin: Samuel Johnson said that “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel” but now we can to that religion. People who really study the Bible believe that Christianity requires submission to the will of God, and maybe it is God’s will that Stephen Baldwin be broke and ridiculous.

    Of course Gauny wold love this new law! He too proclaimed in several places that he could spot illegal immigrants on sight. We dodged a bullet, Santa Clarita. The next fight is in two years. While I have some quibbles with Mr. Boydston’s approach to planning, if he’s our best hope in 2012, then I’m all in for TBB.

    Bossert is so cranky and never has a good thing to say about Santa Clarita. What a surprise! He is obviously jealous that there is not, and never will be, a “Downtown Stevenson Ranch.”

    “Any business that has signage in any language other than English is basically saying that unless you speak our language we don’t want your business. I won’t go to a business like that because they have already let me know that I’m not welcome.” Bossert needs to quit Disney for all their attractions and entertainment that aren’t in english! How very unamerican. Damn you, it’s a small world! Epcot, you can go to hell too! Disneyland Paris? Really hope they serve those french bastards some freedom fries! U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A! Don’t like it get out!

    Isn’t there a county law about signs being in English also? I know we’ve had this fight before. Signs in English isn’t racist, just good common courtesy.

    Here’s hoping that before Mr. Gitlin can convince California to follow Arizona’s lead, he sees how well their new laws work out. Arizona has now burdened themselves with the same overwhelmng responsibilities as the federal immigration agencies who are overworked, underfunded and understaffed. Will they have the resources to sweep illegals from their streets AND still protect their citizens? Will crime really be reduced and emergency rooms really become less crowded (quoting an MSNBC article)? I’ll be curious as to how they plan to train their officers to avoid racial profiling while being compelled to use unfounded presumption in the line of duty rather than sound probable cause. I’m not saying Arizona (or any border state) doesn’t have dire illegal immigration issues, and I can understand them trying to ‘send a message to illegal immigrants’, but the means could have broader negative consequences in trying to achieve the desired results. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

    The transition of California from tossup state to solid democratic state to was expedited with the passage of prop 187 in 1994. Sure, prop 187 served the short term purpose of galvanizing the white conservative vote to reelect Pete Wilson, but in the long term it further drove hispanics (who are culturally conservative) and moderate independents away from the republican party. It is likely the Arizona law will provide republicans with short term political traction, but in the long run it will benefit democrats. This will be particularly the case if national immigration reform facilitates the transition of millions of illegal immigrants into naturalized (voting) citizens. And let’s not forget about the higher birth rate among hispanics. The hispanic share of the registered voter pie is growing and the anglo share is shrinking, which is why Karl Rove and George Bush pushed for immigration reform in the hopes of opening hispanics to the republican party. The anti-hispanic undertone of many who are obsessed with illegal immigration will further solidify the democratic tendencies of hispanic voters, and this will change the course of electoral politics in the usa in the years ahead. This is not quite what the minutemen and their supporters have in mind, but they obviously act out of emotion rather than reasoned thought.

    I think many folks in Arizona are frustrated over the the federal govt’s inability or unwillingness to enforce the laws that are currently on the books. So in that regard, it probably was “emotion” (frustration) that drove this – an emotion that 70% of the voters in Arizona apparently shared in common. This frustration may have political consequences, but I think people are sick and tired of the immigration laws laws not being followed and are not preoccupied about the political fall out. That said, you maybe 100% correct about everything you wrote. We will see.

    Indeed! So what has McCain and Kyl done about the problem besides pandering for votes from the Hispanic community they say is illegal and can’t vote?

    Brian, Why do you take it upon yourself to only mention the Republican politicians malfeasance? You are very quick to point out the faults of Kyl and McCain but you seem reluctant to place ANY blame what so ever at the foot of the Democratic party. Am I reading too much into your comment or is your ideology THAT narrow? If it makes you sleep better tonight Brian, yes – Kyl, McCain and all the other Republicans are solely to blame.

    Who said anything about malfeasance? Your side conveniently likes to forget that you were not only in charge, but you had the majority in all branches and did nothing. Now it’s all NO! So much for being part of the solution.

    JA Good catch. Obviously 28 should have been 24. Another thing that could get confusing is that David Gauny did not win 24 outright, since he was bested in some by Weste and/or McLean.

    I enjoy going to the bakery and Thrift Stores in Old Town Newhall, it’s a nice change from the mall.
