  • Children injured when Deputy slams into car recovering the Signal says. But the Sheriff’s station is staying mum on the collision, not even releasing the Deputy’s full name SIGNAL
  • The 35 year old woman who leapt to her death from the Via Princessa bridge suffered from mental health issues, a Detective says. Several witnesses saw the incident SIGNAL
  • The Hart District is thinking of employing drug-sniffing dogs in the classroom. Randy Cressall, a businessman who owns a car wash on Valencia Blvd, also apparently runs a new drug dog detection service, and he’s offering his dogs for free to the District. Here’s how it would work: students would leave the classroom, and the dog would come in and sniff their personal effects. The Supe says the program could act as a deterrent. SIGNAL

    On Drug Dogs: Over the years I have seen presentations from three K-9 officers in various law enforcement groups from LASD to the DEA and they sneer at these private “drug dogs” since the private groups don’t spend the money on the expensive training required to make a real drug dog (about $50K per dog.) Plus the dogs are used by multiple handlers (also lightly trained) and in the case of real drug dogs they have one handler that they basically live with full time to form the appropriate relationship. People have poor memories. For years the Hart District used a private service for tens of thousands of dollars per year and they NEVER found any significant contraband, which just makes enforcement look like a joke.

    There is only one way to eliminate the squirrel effect on power… And that’s to enclose the entire system. All the substations moved indoors, and the feeders underground. New substation switching technology has gone a long way toward making things much more “squirrel-proof” but until the whole system is protected from foreign debris of any kind, outages will occur. In Burbank, squirrels account for 4% of outages so far in 2010. Palm Fronds 40%, Mylar balloons 20%… (25 total outages ytd…)

    By Signal Staff UPDATED May 18, 2010 1:31 p.m. A bicyclist wearing full colors was injured in a collision with a car just before 1 p.m. today near Rye Canyon Road and Beale Court in the Valencia Industrial Center, authorities said. The bicyclist was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial hospital. The driver of the car remained at the scene, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Stanley. No further information was immediately available, he said.

    No sidewalk on Rye Canyon near Beale Ct. if I’m not mistaken.

    There’s no sidewalk in virtually the entire industrial center. Built as promised, by Newhall Land
