GOOOOOAALLLLLLLL! Catching World Cup Fever in the SCV

The whole world is about to go crazy because the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off in about three hours.

Thirty two national teams will compete at 12 venues over 30 days in South Africa, the first time an African nation has hosted the competition. Mexico and South Africa will kick things off this afternoon.

Given that there is an nine hour time difference between Santa Clarita and South Africa, catching the matches live is going to be challenging, but not impossible.

In fact, the first USA match will be on Saturday at 11:30 am our time between the US and England!

I went ahead and called around to a few places to see if they’ll be carrying the game live. Wings ‘n Things up in the Hasley Canyon neighborhood said the match will be on a few screens. I couldn’t reach Camarano’s Sports Bar in Saugus but I bet they’ll show it too. And the Alamo, that great Mexican place in the heart of Valencia, promised all-day World Cup viewing and said they’d tune into the USA/England match on Saturday.

But if you’re feeling adventurous, I bet there will be no better place to watch a match than at a Mexican taqueria during just about any match. Las Lomas Restaurant in Newhall across from Hart Park is one place I may check out.

    Last I heard Cammaranos shut down mid-May because of a dispute between the owners. Hopefully they reopen because those were the best burgers in the SCV!

    Jeff: The Rose and Crown pub in Newhall will show the matches, including opening up at odd hours (without alcohol) for live European matches.

    My favorite World Cup viewing was at that very spot–our group shared a booth with some British expats who were completely into the game, which made it fun for the non-soccer folks (i.e., me). ND, I remember eating bacon sandwiches and ordering tea that came in a pot complete with its own custom-knit sweater (tea cosy?), and that’s at least as good as beer and chips. Right?

    I’d love to watch USA/England at an English pub any recomendations?

    I recommend not watching any English language broadcast. Boring! Catch it in Spanish instead. After all, every other word is pelota, (ball). Easy! Also the excitement is there as opposed to ESPN. Trust me on this one.

    The McDonalds on Golden Valley in CC is showing World Cup soccer games from 7 AM till noon. The US VS BP grudge match on Sat should be interesting.

    I just noticed that closed captioning doesn’t translate! Pelotta + ball Most are the players names Cerveza = party! Uh Oh, YEAH!!! Estados de Norte America!! GOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!! @ the 40.30 mark! Bueno Suerte America!
