- Councilmember Frank Ferry is behind the item on tomorrow’s City Council Agenda that would increase to $1000 the amount individuals could donate to council candidates. The item also would remove the anonymity offered to people who donate less than $100 to Council candidates. Dave Gauny sounds like he opposes the measure, saying that people who donate to candidates may want to keep their anonymity. Kellar also says he doesn’t like the item. SIGNAL
- Dave Bossert alleges that Councilmember Frank Ferry “rigged the recent City Council election by having a candidate named David Galvan run to create confusion on the ballot with David Gauny.” He says Ferry “apparently had at least two phone calls with David Galvan in which he allegedly offered Galvan some kind of youth-oriented job with the City of Santa Clarita.” Galvan, who was arrested two weeks ago for impersonating a cop, will “no doubt…rollover and spill his guts about what or who prompted him to run for City Council” while in jail Bossert says. - In the third installment of his Water Wars series, Signal reporter Jim Holt talks to Ventura county strawberry farmers about excess chloride in the Santa Clara river and he describes, from VeCo’s perspective, how sanitation boards have tried to delay the cost of treating the problem. The VeCo farmers have also tried to get some federal funding to reduce the cost of a reverse-osmosis plant in the SCV that would remove the chloride SIGNAL
- California’s water crisis appears to be over, but the old proverb “We’re not out of the woods yet” still applies. Locally, Castaic Lake is at 77% capacity LA TIMES
- City trip to DC to lobby for CEMEX solution is said to be successful but no timeline is given on when that issue will be resolved SIGNAL
- Man points gun at people in Heritage park, demands their car keys. He gets in car and, at some point, checks himself into Henry Mayo Hospital and tells staff there that he carjacked someone. A Sheriff’s Deputy tells the Signal that “When he’s released [From Mayo], they’re supposed to call us and we’re supposed to arrest him.” Wow. Don’t go out of your way or anything. - Worlds Collide: Did you know Snooki, one of the stars of MTV’s hit reality show Jersey Shore, made an appearance at Town Center Drive’s “Rocket Fizz” soda pop shop last week ? Unknown whether SCV guidos and guidettes showed up to shower her in over-the-top praise, but what is known is that the 22 year old orange New Jersey resident said she doesn’t like the 10% tax Obama put on tanning beds. - After promising to get tough on illegal immigrants, to even send the National Guard to the border, GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is now reaching out to Latinos, highlighting her dislike of Arizona’s new controversial law according to the LA TIMES
- The new Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation wants to raise $100,000 to apply for a new, larger Enterprise Zone that would include businesses both inside the City of Santa Clarita and outside it. Magic Mountain is in on the effort as well, but there’s only a few Enterprise Zone designations left in the state. If the effort fails, the City of Santa Clarita’s Enterprise Zone will still remain SIGNAL

UAV CAUCUS BLOG - Anti-Buck blogger writes of McKeon’s February “Women’s Conference” that “the very thought of McKeon hosting a conference on the “pressing issues important to women” is a joke, in and of itself. It’s akin to Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hosting that “Conference on the Holocaust” a couple years ago,” adding that McKeon has consistently “opposed legislation supportive of women,” including the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay act of 2009. - Signal editorial echoes my view that while Ferry’s bombastic comments are irresponsible, this community tends to overreact slightly to development projects. But it fails to note its own culpability in the matter; if there is bad information out there, is it not the Signal’s job to expose and correct it as our only paper of record? SIGNAL
- Worried letter writer sends second complaint to Signal about headline reading “Santa Clarita Ranked one of Richest Cities.” I guess the theory is that crooks and burglars scour newspaper headlines nationwide to find which communities tout themselves as rich; then they buy tickets to said communities and burgle them.
